Living Room / Browser Wars Mega Review ...
« Last post by Carol Haynes on February 22, 2006, 03:58 AM »
I just found this review of a range of browsers ... http://internetweek.cmp.com/179101486

It is truly mega and includes info about IE 7 (which looks really interesting), Firefox 1.5, Opera 8.5, Maxthon 1.5

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before but it was new to me. Maxthon particularly comes for some seriously glowing comments, but IE 7 looks set to wow when the final version comes out (I refuse to download MS betas any more so I haven't tried it yet).

I think that's the last one too

Go to http://www.corel.co....mp;pid=1047025446809

and enter code 1841 during checkout.

This is a UK/Europe discount, the US site is already discounted and cheaper than the UK version. Note also it doesn't apply to the download version - just the CDROM version.

General Software Discussion / Re: video editing software
« Last post by Carol Haynes on February 20, 2006, 02:46 AM »
Periodic activation is a pain, but in practice it is unobtrusive and I like their software sufficiently to put up with the annoyance. So long as you have an internet connection sometimes it validates by itself. I have installed the software dozens of times, and on different machines following upgrades abd reinstalls and it has never failed to activate without question.

I am not sure what Pegasus are actually aiming at but I suspect it is to stop activation codes being distributed so that it can stop thousands of activations with the same unlock code.

I'd be surprised is Pegasus as a company disappears. They have a worldwide presence and produce well known and very popular software. I would guess if they got into diffiiculties they would not find it difficult to sell out to another company (much as Sonic Foundry did to Sony). The latest software range they produce (the newer TSUNAMI range) is only available in CDROM format and I am not sure periodic activation is required in that case. The TMPGEnc product range is aimed at the shareware market and whilst I don't like their solution I can understand them wanting to protect their investment.

General Software Discussion / Re: video editing software

I needed a way to edit out videos imported over from my ReplayTV (like Tivo).  After using a few different tools (revue, video redo, womble mpeg video wizard, I ended up purchasing the womble editor.  One thing to look for in an MPEG editor is the ability to edit without having to re-encode.  Womble, is one such tool.

That's why I ended up going for TMPGEnc MPEG Editor - it edits without the need for a complete recode and is frame accurate but only costs $48 compared to $99 for Womble. I also find the TMPGEnc products simplicity to use as the 3 step wizard based interface couldn't be made simpler. See http://www.pegasys-i.../en/product/tme.html

If you need to recode too then TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress does a very good job too (it is the full version of the free version of TMPGEnc) although it isn't fast but the quality is excellent and includes frame accurate editing.

All of the TMPGEnc products have free trial downloads too.

I have tried womble too, it is good but I didn't find the interface all that obvious.

"TMPGEnc MPEG Editor" is rather good (though it isn't free). The biggest pluses are that it allows you convert MPEG files for other uses (DVD, VCD etc) but best of all it can do lossess quick editing. If all you want to do is chop out bits it doesn't recode the file and only takes the time necessary to physically write the new MPEG file to disc. Really neat simple interface too.

Here are a couple of screen shots (click on them to see the full size versions):

Clip editing window - note you can add keyframes which is great for producing DVD chapter points:

Output settings window:

Sorry for the poor quality JPEGs but the PNG files I created were too large to upload.

Just to say welcome too, and I really like GBP which has replaced my other backup methods except for drive imaging.

I know, regex love isn't natural . . . oh well, what can you do?

Cody can provide counselling if required ...

Alternatively drinking can distract you long enough to go cold-turkey.

The BBC and Oxford University are trying to run the largest project ever mounted on climate-change modelling and need the help of as many people as possible to acheive the goals of the project.

The idea is to run lots of different climate models to find out what differences occur as different variables are altered. Even with the fastest supercomputers this is pretty impossible to acheive currently but lots of people worldwide running one model each and collating the information can acheive more than all the world's supercomputers combined.

Similar in idea to SETI, this is looking at a problem that could have potential short term benefits for strategic emmissions planning with more conclusive evidence to back up recommendations.

If you are interested there are details on this BBC webpage: http://www.bbc.co.uk...opics/climatechange/

Just click on the link if you want to take part (or click http://bbc.cpdn.org/index.php to go directly to the project page).

You download some software and during installtion you need to register with a valid email address.

The software runs all the time using low impact idle CPU cycles only but you can easily suspend it if you need to or shutdown your computer if you don't like to leave it running. It also comes with a screensaver module (which isn't essential to the running of the project) but shows you how your particular model is progressing in the form of a rotating globe. If you don't want the screen saver you can view the animation from within the software application. Data is reported back to the project via the internet but you don't need a permanent internet connection, so dial-up users can use this too.

The project runs until May.

Interesting fact/comment: There are 4.6 billion people on Earth (at least in the countries listed on http://bbc.cpdn.org/usermap.php) ... that is 1 for every year of the Earth's age. When the Romans arrived in Britain it is estimated that the population of mainland Britain was about 8000, it is now 60 million .... progress?

What a miserable lot ... I like gif animations they often cheer me up when I'm bored.

If you are going to disable gif on the forums can you make it a user selectable customization please. Also you'd better warn people not to upload gif files as attachments!

Na, I like to spin - keeps me warm on the ice.

I can't make it much bigger unless you want me to put on some weight as it is almost maximum avatar height. Just thought it would be nice to be the size I aspire to (rather than reality) ....

Is this better:

Well not quite but I have been inspired by the winter Olympics - hence the new avatar.

Anyone else got suitable Olympic Avatars to show themselves off to the full ;)

(Now if only I could actually get into that position!)

I know some people swear by GoBack but I have to sound a note of caution ...

The way GoBack works can seriously screw up your system and make the recovery of partitions very difficult. This has happened to me once and because GoBack rewrites the partition data on your disc it is non-trivial to recover your system. I ended up using the drive manufacturers utilities to low level format the disc again and had to reinstall everything. (For this reason Fred Langa in his newsletters regularly advises users to avoid utilities like GoBack.)

My 2p would be to use a good incremental imaging software regularly using a separate partition for your backups. After the initial backup it only takes a couple of minutes to do an incremental backup - though it isn't as quick to do a restore if you want to step back.

If you like testing dodgy downloads (and who doesn't on this site) use TotalUninstall or simialr to install programs and log system changes so that you can instantly step back at registry and file level. There is no danger with this approach of your whole system suddenly becoming unuseable.

Mailwasher?

Personally I use POPfile and the Outclass plugin for Outlook. Works great but needs a short amount of training to start working effectively. See https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=2084.0
