General Software Discussion / Re: The Non-Notepad(MS) Thread!

I would probably have bought emeditor at some point if they hadn't stopped offering lifetime licenses, but I can understand why they did it.
EmEditor Free for personal use, but you might find the limitations too great.  Besides, good though it is, it's a bit big for this thread?

Batch file method should work, but I've sometimes used ports of the Unix cat command:
Usage: cat [OPTION] [FILE]...
Concatenate FILE(s), or standard input, to standard output.

  -A, --show-all           equivalent to -vET
-b, --number-nonblank    number nonblank output lines
  -e                       equivalent to -vE
-E, --show-ends          display $ at end of each line
-n, --number             number all output lines
-s, --squeeze-blank      never more than one single blank line
  -t                       equivalent to -vT
  -T, --show-tabs          display TAB characters as ^I
  -u                       (ignored)
-v, --show-nonprinting   use ^ and M- notation, except for LFD and TAB
--help               display this help and exit
--version            output version information and exit

With no FILE, or when FILE is -, read standard input.

-B, --binary             use binary writes to the console device.

« Last post by rjbull on June 12, 2013, 03:20 PM »
Once you buy a Serif program, they continually send you emails with upgrade offers after a new version comes out.  So the apparent newness may be a "perception problem."

Sorry, it's an English cricketing metaphor/term.
I suggest you don't confuse non-cricketing nations further by explaining how to bowl a maiden over  ;D

Iain Banks was apparently only 59 years old when he died - well below the typical "three score and ten"
There've been news bulletins about a Web site that reports life expectancy in different parts of Britain.  They apparently used an average span of 75.

I don't recall reading anything by Iain Banks. He didn't have a very long innings, did he?
(Actually, Walking On Glass was sort of sf too, but I might be the only person in the world who liked it -- it's often forgotten.)
I read a few of his, including Walking On Glass.  He seemed to specialise in odd, unsettling novels, but in some cases, they stick in your mind.  In the case of that one, the "matrioshka doll" creatures.

Oh, and you might remember the fuss about Feersumm Enjinn.
No, but I remember having fun decoding Bascule the Teller's spelling  :)

Against a Dark Background was a good one (IMHO).  But, I remember reading a review which commented that he "gleefully" killed off his characters.

I think there's a project to bring all his work back into print.  I haven't read very many of his; last one I read was the entertaining Night Lamp.

Please note – NoteWindow is designed to accommodate a mobile, platform independent, browser-based, touch interface. It is not a windows (or any platform specific), desktop program. (and, a black background helps to conserve battery life on portable devices.) :)
which gives the reason for some of its appearance.

Is it just my system, or is there something slightly odd about 2.18.01's accelerator keys?  The first time I press the hotkey then W to bring up the main window, they don't work as expected.  That is, if I press Alt+F, nothing happens, even though the File menu is underlined.  I have to press Alt and release it to highlight File, then press Enter to drop down the menu.  This is with the cursor on All clips in the tree, but, CHS 2.18.01 starts with All coloured grey, not blue to indicate it's active.  If I click on it to make it go blue, or likewise on New clips, the accelerator keys work as expected, i.e. Alt+F immediately drops down the File menu, Alt+L the layouts, etc.

I don't know if this happened before, but I don't remember it.

Simple research? THAT's the gold mine we all take for granted! Print a quick map of new places, check the service hours, menus, shopping, etc etc etc, save *weeks* of your life in twelve days.
Up to a point.  Now we're in a world where everybody and his dog has to have a Web site.  It seems to be easy enough to get one set up (I assume; I've never tried it myself)  But then there's a big problem - maintenance.  Smaller businesses just don't have the resources to put their every change immediately on their Web site.  I know a garden centre like that, where their Web site doesn't lead anywhere, their e-mail doesn't work.  It's no more than an electronic poster stuck on a virtual wall.  One of the local photography clubs has a dire Web site because nobody's got the know-how or the time to make it any better.  In other words, the Internet favours bigger and better-resourced operations over the small ones, even though small ones are often excellent.

Coding Snack Guidelines / Re: Count Number of Pages in PDF Files
« Last post by rjbull on April 30, 2013, 04:06 PM »
This only gets you part way:

Command-line pdfinfo from the XPDF suite will print the page count of an individual file, amongst much other data.  So can
PDFTK, but again one file at a time.

You could put either in a batch file for multiple PDFs, but you'd have to massage the output data to make it tidy.

General Software Discussion / How to stop Firefox page-opening sound?
« Last post by rjbull on April 30, 2013, 03:51 PM »
Lately Firefox (16.0.2) has been making silly noises each time it opens a Web page.  It didn't used to do this, and I haven't even had any recent updates that I know of.  I badly want this irritating sound turned off, but I can't see where to do it under Options.  Please can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks...

PromptPal Version 2 Now Available!
05 April 2013 02:32 PM

PromptPal Version 2.0

PromptPal - our popular command line replacement for administrators and power users - has finally been given a major update. There are many changes in v2, but here are the highlights:

Totally rewritten internally to put you closer to the underlying command shell. Commands that formerly required special treatment in PromptPal v1 just work normally in v2, e.g. More, Telnet, NSLOOKUP etc.
Support for Windows PowerShell and other shells of your choosing.
Integrated support for "Run as different user", which can even be combined with "Run as Administrator"
Optional initial command for all new tabs
Toolbar control over command completion options (simple on/off toggles)
Command history is separate after tab creation.
Pass-thru for CTRL+D and any other key combos not mapped to a menu item.
    Windows 8 compatibility improved

If you make a lot of use of the command line or find it a daunting but necessary evil, then give the new version a try. You'll be surprised how much time and effort it will save you!

Existing PromptPal customers who bought on or after 1st June 2012 have already been sent out free upgrade licenses for version 2. Those who bought version 1 prior to that date can upgrade at a 50% discount. Emails about this will be sent out on Monday 8th April 2013, but if you'd like upgrade earlier or have any questions, please either submit a ticket or email us here: mailto: [email protected]

Living Room / Re: Recommend free image hosting site?
« Last post by rjbull on April 18, 2013, 02:43 PM »
Just again for discussion, how many images do you have? I'm close to hosting them myself.
Only a handful - I think I ended up with four.  My immediate problem is solved as it turns out that only one's first contact with eBay's customer service has to be made through their Web site.  Replies are sent to your ordinary e-mail, and of course it was easy to attach the images to my reply to that.  Would you believe that eBay UK(?) customer service "don't have the option to open the links you provided?"  Security gone mad, I suppose.  So for my current task, external image hosting turned out to be unusable anyway!  :wallbash:

What features do you need is the question.
Nothing much.  I'm having a problem with my eBay UK account, which has suddenly started sending "New items that match:" messages in an odd format.  eBay UK seem impossible to contact by normal means, only through their Web site, so you have to use the online messaging system.  Tech support wanted a screenshot, but there doesn't seem to be a way of attaching anything to the messages, which only have a limited text space anyway.  Hence needing an independent image hosting service.

I used TechSmith's freeware Jing, which hosts images online, but whined about updates, and I felt I wanted more freedom in what screenshot/annotation program to use.

Living Room / Recommend free image hosting site?

Please can you recommend a free image hosting site?  I'm only looking for a repository for screenshots at present, rather than a photographer's gallery.

I'm aware that a few have been mentioned, especially with respect to SSC, but was wondering about pros and cons.

Thanks...

You could do this even with Notezilla 7 using wildcards inside titles. When sticking note to a particular window you are shown  the 'Stick To Window' dialog with list of open windows. You can just double click on any window title and edit it like *eBay*. So the note will appear on all pages of eBay website.

Ah...  I missed the possibility to edit.  Thanks for pointing that out.

It would be nice to see a feature where the linking is to ANY webpage with the text "DonationCoder" in the window text.  And not just a specific web-page.

My version of this is to have a particular sticky note pop up on ALL pages of a given site, not just a specific one.  I couldn't see that in NZ7.  Please, is it available in 8?
