General Software Discussion / Re: SoftMaker Office 2012 BETA testing
« Last post by tomos on November 30, 2011, 02:19 AM »
All customers who own an older version of SoftMaker Office, TextMaker, PlanMaker, Presentations, or Ashampoo Office, are entitled to purchasing the upgrade version for just € 49.95 / US$ 59.95.
...

Seamless reading and writing of all Microsoft Office 2010 file formats: DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX are now supported.

SoftMaker eM Client 3.5, the new Outlook alternative that manages your e-mails, tasks, events, and contacts

Berlitz translation dictionaries for easy translations between English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian

Many new features in all of the SoftMaker Office applications

The introductory price of € 49.95 is only valid for a limited time. Place your order now to get the latest SoftMaker Office at a great price.
~
as someone who has paid for upgrades from Ashampoo to Softmakers versions, I'd prefer a favoured discount. But I suspect that when they say "only valid for a limited time" they mean for those with older/cheaper versions.

Full price is $99.95 for the pro version - I dont see any standard version...

The viewer can click the indicated button to request control; the host will be prompted.  Similarly, the host can click it to give control.

that's what I thought but it didnt work as expected - I think we did stress it a bit :) They tried clicking the mouse button first and were just shown the two names without any dialogue. Then there was confusion about the names - who was the presenter (them, but initially I was thinking it was me seeing as I was telling them what to do :-\ ) In the end I opened the list of users at my end and clicked on their name, and it worked then.

I think it will be easier next time...

I ran into a problem with troubleshooting - I am unable to see uac demands for password at their end (more accurately, I'm not able to see the password dialogue itself) - so I'm not able to do anything requiring admin rights from within their user account. I guess this would be a problem with any method....
I guess the only solution is have someone there the whole time to fill in the password, or to use an admin account.

I think not being able to take over the UAC prompts may be by design -- if a remote control program could "click" them, then any local badware could as well. I don't know if you can choose to run the client with higher privileges to avoid it.

running as admin uses a different desktop space (not sure of the terminology) so I presume that's why I dont see it - and yeah, I presume too that this is part of the design/security

used join.me a short while ago -
it took ages to get control - their instructions just kept saying easy easy easy but they left out a step - or else it was acting buggily - we got so addled by it not working that I'd have to do it again to describe exactly what happened. Note, I'm a great beta tester - if something can be done wrong I *will* do it wrong :-) and with beginners at the other end I'm sure they're similar.

Worked well in the end anyways! Both now have it on the desktop so easier access next time.

Can you made something like: "Chasiki" by author "Vladimir Vihodsev" with multiple monitor support?
-The Noobiset User (November 27, 2011, 03:48 PM)

I'm not familiar with the above, but have you asked Vladimir Vihodsev for multiple monitor support?

« Last post by tomos on November 27, 2011, 06:51 AM »
this has been discussed before, but with XP (and my search), so I thought I'd start a new thread.

I help an older couple with "learning computer". There are times they need help, so I was wondering is there some way that I can access their account, in particular when they are already logged in, and having a problem. (It would also be helpful at times to have a seperate session, for updating stuff etc.)

Both computers are Windows 7

TIA :-)

thanks, sounds okay,
I'll probably get the 2GB version and a 32GB card - and mainly just use the card then. It doesnt have to be a superfast card I presume (I'm looking at one that's class 8 which is reasonlably fast)...

  • Does it complicate things to use an SD card?
  • Does it read internal and SD together?

I'm wondering if it's better to get a 2GB model and add an sd card later, or to get a larger 8GB straight away.
(I want to use it with computer style speakers, not sure yet how much use it will get in it's planned location - so I'm uncertain what exactly I want...)

I have no plans to go dumpster surfing in the foreseeable future either ;)
Spend a lot on food actually, but never buy water (veering vaguely direction topic) the tap water here is good (and OMG, it hydrates!)

Even cheaper?

Go dumpster surfing :)

watched a video lately about a guy living without money (somewhere near Bristol I think). Him & friends got mostly organic stuff out of the supermarket-skips. He said they didnt reduce it to sell it off cause they wanted to keep the prices up, so they dumped it instead...
So, good advice there f0dder ;-)

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Super Flexible File Synchronizer Mini-Review
« Last post by tomos on November 23, 2011, 02:39 PM »
Per email

1) they considering new name - Syncovery (I personally think just SuperFlexible would be good...)
2) working on version #6
3) release of 5.6

we are going to rename the product! Please take a look at our poll regarding the designated new name, Syncovery:
http://tech.groups.y...e/surveys?id=2707004

Or feel free to send me your thoughts by email (http://www.superflexible.com/contact.htm).

Version 6 will contain lots of new features and improvements. Read all about it on this page: http://www.superflexible.com/v6.htm

While the new version 6 is in development, we are still updating version 5 frequently to fix any issues reported by customers. The result is that version 5.60 is one of the best and most stable releases ever.

The update is necessary especially if you use Google Docs or the box.net online storage service. Because cloud providers continuously work on their systems, compatibility updates are sometimes needed.

There's a huge discount on the Pro version for Macintosh for some more days available here:

Living Room / Re: multiple monitors vs large monitor?
« Last post by tomos on November 17, 2011, 03:43 AM »
the thing about monitors these days is the format, long and, eh, shallow. Can you even get any other format these days expect 16:9 ?

I think nudones setup would appeal to me best - even with "just" two monitors (big landscape, smaller portrait).

I just have one 16:10 monitor and it suits my needs okay (so I think it depends very much on your needs/work-pattern), two would be very nice, but an unnecessary luxury for me.

Two months of having had your life reduced to 6 simple tasks each day:
  • eat
  • pack up
  • put one foot in front of the other until the next camp site
  • set up
  • eat
  • sleep

Good heavens, you must have been bursting for a pee when you arrived at home!

Living Room / Re: Bill Gates, not Steve Jobs, is the real hero
« Last post by tomos on November 05, 2011, 04:37 PM »
Going back to the thread title: "Bill Gates, not Steve Jobs, is the real hero" - the "hero" idea is BS imo - I think any attempt to make Gates a hero is just reacting to the glorification of Jobs.

Me, I believe any solution to the world's problems is in change/transformation of [absolutely lots of things - ways we think/act, structure of the financial world, etc.]. Anyone who makes a fortune, and then gives (even if it is generously) is not necessarily helping much. (I'm really not trying to knock Gates here.)

more oddness, but different experience to slemmigfisk -
the pause key now works for me, also over an admin app - with FARR being run as "normal" (see OP where it didnt work)
Also works when running FARR as admin.
