The sad thing is that there are only two OSes in the world. UNIX and Windows.

We could certainly use some fresh innovation in the OS department.

I took the liberty of compiling everything listed in the thread into one reg file (and one to reverse the changes)

Awesome! Thanks! I'll update the original post to point to your download.

EDIT: Just tested both the reg and the "undo" and they work as advertised (Win7 64-bit). Thanks again!

As for complaining about "enslavement", geez... It's like they're upset that they can't run around raping anymore. "Enslavement"??? It's a really bad situation. Seems like it's needed there. Badly.

I agree. If this device is necessary then women are already "enslaved" by the fear of needing one anyway.

I'm reminded of an argument against "gun control" (read: gun prohibition), that defines gun control as the idea that a woman being brutally raped and murdered is somehow morally superior to a woman with a gun who can defend herself against would-be rapists/murderers.

Not having a deterrent for these crimes is more enslavement than having the deterrents available, IMO.

If the title sounds like something from a really bad horror movie, you must be thinking of Teeth (2007).

However, truth is often stranger than fiction. This condom has been in the making for 40 years.

The woman inserts the latex condom like a tampon. Jagged rows of teeth-like hooks line its inside and attach on a man's penis during penetration, Ehlers said.

Once it lodges, only a doctor can remove it -- a procedure Ehlers hopes will be done with authorities on standby to make an arrest.

They'd better be paying the (male) test subjects a lot of money!

Living Room / Re: FCC Moves to Regulate Internet

I found it, or at least one version of the story:

One day an Arab and his camel were crossing the desert. Night came and the temperature became colder. The Arab put up his tent and tied the camel to it. The Arab went to sleep.

The temperature became slightly colder and the camel asked the Arab if he could just put his nose in the tent to warm up. The Arab agreed that the camel could just put his nose in, because the tent was small and there was no room for 2. So the camel's nose became warm and after a while the temperature went down even more.

The camel asked the Arab again, if he could just put his fore legs in because they were very cold. The Arab reluctantly agreed that the camel could only put his fore legs in and no more. So the camel moved in his fore legs and they became warm. After sometime the camel asked the Arab again that he had to put in his hind legs or else he won't be able to make the journey the next morning with frozen legs. So the Arab agreed and once the camel moved his hind legs in, there was no more room in the tent for the Arab and the Arab was kicked out.

Isn't there some sort of allegory about a camel's nose in a tent that is analogous to this situation?

I'm adding a new post to the complaints section about DonationCoder.com trying to get rid of my favorite subsection of the forum!!!11111 >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( :P

I probably (ab)use the Complaints and Compliments section the most, and quite honestly in regard to its fate I'm indifferent.

I probably wouldn't complain so much if there wasn't a section specifically for it. So maybe that's a vote to get rid/merge it.

Living Room / Re: How to Use a School Project to Score Political Points 101
« Last post by Deozaan on June 20, 2010, 05:04 PM »
The Huffington Post makes it look like the politician was caught off guard and didn't know how to respond to the $550 million being cut from the education budget, so he just left.

The problem is that supposedly the video was edited from the student's actual video to shine a bad light on the politician.

Supposedly the student was mistaken about the budget cuts. Something weird & confusing, like money was cut from the budget, but even more was put back in via other methods.
Supposedly the politician returned with more information and the whole thing was quite amicable and friendly.
Supposedly even the student is angry that his video was manipulated to spread this false information.
Supposedly the person responsible (perhaps indirectly) for the edited video is this politician's opponent, who lost to him during the previous election.

As Paul Keith said, there's not really much way of knowing which parts of the story are true without more information.

It's a pretty sad time when even the "video or it didn't happen" doesn't mean it really happened.

You think the graphic with the viral hairpins was hand-drawn?  Looks painstaking.  You couldn't do it faster with some kind of drawing software?

What Oshyan said:

The Viral Hairpins graphic is almost certainly a computer rendered image, but the first one at top is hand-drawn (that does not mean it was not done with a computer program, just that it was done "by hand", not automatically calculated by a rendering algorithm).

Technical skills? Sounds more like 1337 haxxor skillz to me!

I'm not sure about that.

It's not that hard to create a fake e-mail account and send messages to people while connected to an unsecured AP.

Also, sorry if you were being sarcastic and I missed it. ;)

Pre-post edit: I tried to submit this quite some time ago but was having internet problems. After reading 40hz's response, it seems I did indeed miss your sarcasm.

Someone was recently tracked down through a public/open wifi access point and arrested for criminal actions:

Barry Ardolf, 45, is accused of using his neighbor’s computer to send the threatening message to the Vice President [Joe Biden]. Ardolf has a history of disagreements with neighbors in the various places he has lived.

According to the affidavits filed by FBI Special Agent Robert Cameron, Ardolf was already using his technical skills to harass his neighbors. Not only did he send threatening messages to the Vice President, Ardolf also sent child pornography to his neighbor’s colleagues under a fake email account he set up [in his neighbor's name] without his neighbor’s knowledge.

So, as has been said before: Yes it's possible for you to be tracked down through public/open wifi APs.

I'm amazed that you'd ask what a leaflet is, and not, "What's a lipid?" :-[

Kalos, the image looks hand-drawn to me. I would say that's not going to be easy for a novice.

I dunno. It just seems... not the thing you announce to the world. Taking someone's life (even indirectly, such as by giving the go ahead to do it) is a serious a solemn thing, even if that person "deserved" it. I don't think it belongs on Twitter, where it feels like:

"just executed a criminal. feelin mighty hungry. wares my sammich? lol!"

If he needs to reconcile his conscious in such a public manner, he probably ought to get a different job. It's not like he's the judge, jury, and executioner. He's just the guy who tells the firing squad to fire after the criminal's death has already been determined by others.

I think this sums it up really well:

Yes, the “public” would have read about this in the newspaper, or watched a clip about the execution on their evening news. With 140 characters, though, it’s difficult to express any type of sentiment or meaning behind one’s words. The AG simply stated that he approved the execution at that time. People will read any number of things into his message. Unless you were standing with Mr. Shurtleff at the time he sent the tweet, it’s likely you have no idea how he “felt” about it.

Developer's Corner / Re: Resources for learning Mercurial?
« Last post by Deozaan on June 19, 2010, 09:32 PM »
Thought I'd pop in here and mention that though this isn't really useful for learning Hg, http://bitbucket.org/ is a good site for hosting an online Hg repo.

With a free account you can create one private repo and unlimited public repos, up to 1 GB (total) in space. BitBucket also provides a wiki (which is actually an Hg repo itself!) and issue tracker for each project, so it's a pretty good project management system.

Unfortunately, due to my complete inability to understand svn (know any good links for a single developer?)

I highly recommend Mercurial. I've tried multiple times to get SVN repositories set up and failed just as many times and never understood anything about it. But Mercurial is easy to understand and I set it up all by myself on my first try and have been using it successfully for about a week now, after I read about it in this thread. And it's great for a single developer because you don't actually need to host it on a server somewhere. Your repository is a directory on your computer.

For a quick (illustrated) overview on how Mercurial works: http://hginit.com/

To download and install: http://mercurial.selenic.com/

A couple free online repository hosting sites that offer Mercurial as an option:

http://bitbucket.org/ <- allows 1 private project and unlimited public (i.e. open source) projects with a maximum (total) space of 1 GB for free. Also comes with an issue tracker and wiki.
http://code.google.com/ <- only allows open source projects AFAIK
http://icculus.org/ <- You need to petition the owner for an account, and he's kind of picky, or so he says.

NOTE: Also similar to Mercurial is Git, but it has basically no support for Windows systems. See the DC thread on Git

Seems to be intriguing enough to try out. Hopefully, I'll find it useful enough to keep.

I agree, but since I use Chrome, I have to thank both ewemoa for bringing it up and Paul Keith for showing me the Chrome extension.

Best Archive Tool / Re: Versions??
« Last post by Deozaan on June 19, 2010, 08:06 PM »
I had not planned on evaluating them all!
;D

I'm not suggesting you try every archive utility out there but I thought you might be interested in 7-Zip since AFAIK (from my personal observations of what sort of zip formats I frequently find online) there are three "major players" (for Windows) in the archive utility field: WinZip, WinRAR and 7-Zip.

Again, AFAIK (and I could be very, very wrong) all the others are more esoteric.

Of those three, I found I like 7-Zip the best.

Bonus treat is that is the original video for it, as far as I know.

The acoustic version is actually quite beautiful.

I use Google Chrome so I don't think DTA! is not an option.

First, check your FDM monitoring settings to make sure the ALT must be pressed checkbox is enabled:

I was never able to figure out the FDM monitor settings for Chrome because I couldn't ever find Chrome's install directory. But since I last tried I found out it was somewhere in the Users directory and so I found it this time and have properly configured FDM to work with Chrome now. Thanks for prompting me to look into that again!

<EDIT> I was able to get my download manager to work with SourceForge.</EDIT>

In long: Ah, good old open source applications! Nothing like some great free software to put on your PC. But what if you have connection issues and can't stay online long enough to complete that download?

Good thing you've got FreeDownloadManager(.org!)

But wait! What's this? SourceForge uses some trickery so that the download starts automatically in the browser.

Ah, no problem. Just cancel the download and copy the direct link they so kindly provide and paste it into FDM.

What the heck? 20kB? The file should be 40MB! Argh! The Direct link is just a link to a script that chooses a mirror and forwards you to the download!

In short: How the smurf do you use a download manager on SourceForge?

Heh. It seems to have warned me about itself running. ;D

Thanks for pointing this out, lanux!

One thing I've always found troubling about this type of offer is that you have X time perion to download, install, and activate. So if one was to need to reinstall said application (say...) 6 months from now, they're hosed? Or can/will/does the key work again after the fact?

I think it depends on the application. But generally I'd say you're hosed, or else how would they stop anyone else from just sharing the file and installing it after the giveaway? Specifically with Daemon Tools Pro Standard, the key was "built into" the installer and it is probably the same key for everyone who got it from the giveaway, and my guess is that it will become invalid very soon (when the offer ends).

But no matter the setting or theme, I become agitated very easily when a director/screenplay insults my intelligence by presenting me with people who behave irrationally and illogically without providing a logical reason as to why their cognitive abilities are so impaired.

Wow...

You can get all that just from a movie?

How do you ever manage to make it through a work day? ;) :)

The medication (legal and prescribed!) sure helps. ;)
