Living Room / Re: Reach Into Transparent Computer, Grab Content
« Last post by wraith808 on March 12, 2013, 11:22 AM »
That's because people looked at the eye candy rather than what it was solving behind the scenes.  And the fact that it was trying to be created without the backing technology.  If you can use a gesture based interface with the technology to back it up, then it wouldn't just be eye candy, IMO.

If that's not what we're doing for some reason, then just starting one wouldn't get the desired result, now would it?  That's why I was asking.  So any thoughts?

It sort of reminds me of the interface on Minority Report, which was a concept that I loved.

Developer's Corner / Developer Discussions
« Last post by wraith808 on March 12, 2013, 09:55 AM »
Just a question- I've noticed the incidents of developer discussions here wane.  There's a topic here and there- but mostly tangentially related to development.  Nothing to really sink the teeth into from a development perspective.  I know we have a wide variety of platforms and languages represented, but I really do miss that.  I guess for answers I tend to go to SO- which is good for Q&A.  But sometimes you want more than just the answer, and that's one of the things I've loved about DoCo is the number of smart people here that can discuss these kinds of topics in a civilized manner.

Has anyone else noticed this and/or missed this?

Living Room / Linked In... too linked in?
« Last post by wraith808 on March 12, 2013, 09:29 AM »
I keep my personal and professional profiles/lives separate.  It's a pretty artificial demarcation, and I know that with effort someone can cross the streams.  But that effort is the point.

On linked in, I have a profile.  I've never linked it with one of my personal profiles, I've never availed myself of the search your contact list (which I think is a bad way to get a list of contacts for a professional profile in any case, but oh well), and use my professional e-mail.  Up until recently, its been fine.

But over the last few days/weeks, I've noticed contacts from my personal life coming up on the you may know this person.  The creepier thing about it is that some of them I haven't corresponded with in literally years.  So the only place that this could have come from is my e-mail.  That I've never given them the password to.

Something is rotten.  Very rotten.  And I'd drop linked in- other than the fact that I do legitimately use it for business contacts.

Why can't companies just stick to doing things well rather than trying to play underhanded tactics?

There is an add-in that does roughly the same in Firefox, called Flem.  But at present I prefer using Chrome.

Have you tried contacting the add-in author?  Sometimes they're open to porting it; they just might not initially see the need.

Movies with Sean Connery are practically all in the same league as the Clint Eastwood movies.

Highlander 2: The Sickening.  There should have been only one!

To take the devil's advocate stance here- so we're banning things based on what others *might* do with them?  That seems a bit draconian...

You mean like banning guns and accessories?

That was the (thinly veiled) point.  Thanks.

But to continue, the same people saying that there out to be more bans are the same people saying that there shouldn't be controls on guns.  Hmm...

That is a good one.   I'd add Serenity to that list also, and Westworld.

I wasn't talking that specifically but the other comments, but going even into that specific case- what happens when it gets into being used to account for handicaps... you're going to have a hard time with that argument.

Oh yeah... I love the westerns.  That's why I included the few I did in my list- they're on the short list of the modern western bringing things back!  If I actually went back that far and started naming westerns, I'd be naming them for a while!

As for "Sniper", I really liked that when I first saw it, but I'm not sure that I'd like it if I saw it again. I think I've changed a lot, and that would colour my view of it.

I wouldn't doubt it.  It's from a time when regime change and control of foreign countries was something that if not to be proud about, wasn't something to totally deny in Hollywood.  The targets are bad people... but who judges that outside of the rule of law?

I think a lot of old movies suffer from that syndrome.  But I love Berenger and Billy Zane.

But along those lines (and on the other side) I'd recommend Best Seller.  I think you'd love that Ren.

That's just it (responding to the spoiler).  You don't pay for TV- it's broadcast.  And what is the rule about anything that you don't pay for?

Strange Days is one that you really like, or you don't

Liked it. :-*  The story was good. But Juliette Lewis's performance as his drug fueled rock star ex-girlfriend was amazing. Forget the legs - which are very nice btw. This lady can sing! Thought I was watching a cross between Tina Turner and Gracie Slick watching that scene. Oh yeah!
 ;D

Oh, totally agree with you.  There wasn't a performance that surprised me as much until I saw Tom Cruise in Rock of Ages.

2. Re: The "entitlement" claim, most of TV was offered for free via ad revenue for decades, so it's not quite fair to suddenly decide that "it's different on the internet" and that a former TV viewer, now an online article viewer, suddenly became "entitled".

It's actually not different on the internet.  TV is having a hard time with DVRs and such that effectively are Ad-Blockers.  Adapt or die.

@Wraith - good stuff! And you've got Dark City - one of my favorite sleeper sci-fi flicks!

I love it when they bring that film noir look to sci-fi like they did in The Thirteenth Floor. Which is also highly recommended.

Looking up those two that you'd recommended, I came upon two others that I'd forgotten that I don't think are mentioned:

Gattaca.jpgstrangedays.jpg

Both of those are real sleepers, and Strange Days is one that you really like, or you don't.  I don't think there's an in between on that one.

So... continuing to be Mephistopheles :)

These glasses have applications and implications far outside of being a simple device of entertainment, even if not in that particular form.  So what happens then?

Don't know how I missed this before!  I'm a big movie aficionado.  A lot of my favorites have already been mentioned, but I still have a few to add.

Just going with the non-mainstream/old ones here...

And even though they are mainstream, I had to add

More information.

I ... still don't get it.  I mean, I get that it is exactly what I thought it was- a meta-kickstarter to poke fun at kickstarter.  But ... the money is real.  I guess I just don't make enough money to play with it like that.

As much as I love Gog... their lineup of games is somewhat limited. :)  As a gamer, I choose to deal with Steam on some terms... i.e. if a game has other DRM on steam, I won't use it.  And steam has somewhat of an upside to me.  I no longer have a huge collection of boxes to things that I will never install again, and I can delete stuff from my HD without worrying about where it is. :)

Truthfully, and I think I'm not alone, I have no problems with ads on most sites.  However, bad people use them to do bad things- both to distribute malware, and to put obtrusive things before you that use flash, flashing graphics, and other things that make you want to burn your eyes out.  So I run one.  And I'm too lazy to whitelist.  Sometimes I do if there is an appeal.  But most times I just don't pay attention.

Until the advertisers solve the problems with the bad ads on networks, and make people really not care, this won't change.  But to get to that point, they have to stop trying to affect the numbers for one thing, and that will never happen.

And 40 effective summarizes why this approach of gaining revenue doesn't work well, so I'll stop rambling now. :)

I don't have that problem- been running chrome on DoCo for a while.  So it's something else other than just the browser.

Steam is actually quite decent. I thoroughly enjoy it.

This.  But to each his own, I guess.  No matter how much I don't like the way that some companies treat their customers, I've grown to the point that the more effective way to protest/combat it is to choose not to play rather than play someone's work for free.  That's a personal decision... but one I feel better about.
