After some well-meaning nagging I have put a facebook share code on the site and forum pages --- you'll see it if you scroll down to bottom of forum pages.  It's powered by getsitecontrol.com.
Personally I find it too much in your face distracting, so I don't want to keep it.  I'm open to adding some very subtle extra button somewhere that pops up a menu, but this one is too much for me.
But I've promised to leave it on for a day so to see if people dislike it as much as me.  Post your thoughts here.

fixed it :)

Low tech gadget entry:

If anyone plays in a lake or on the beach, and doesn't know about these cheap things called "water shoes", you don't know what you are missing.  They are super light weight slip-on things that dry quickly, and have a thin rubber sole.  They make it fun to walk in mud or on rocks without killing your feet.

and a "lost sheep" one would be cute ^_^

i don't want to encourage more lost sheep!!

and we work on exponentials here, the next Post Achievement mug should be at 25,000 posts.

i suppose there are a few more members that need 5000 post mugs too..

f0dder you have already earned the never-yet-created, occasionally mentioned, 5000 post mug.
if we could find someone to design that mug..
6286
You could disable non-contiguous matching above that too, if you want to further weed out spurious matches.

Remember, non-contiguous matching is what allows "msw" to match "MicroSoft Word", and so it naturally matches lots of stuff.

Try the new beta:

You'll find a new option in the Search Behavior tab:
Screenshot - 3_27_2015 , 10_30_41 AM_ver001.png
6288
Yes, that's much better. I'll put up a beta on friday for testing.
6289
so i added an option for "any chance something along the lines of that force matching the first letter(s) might sneak in there?"
but the outcome seems less than usable -- files you expect to be found are not found.
for example if you search for "firefox" it won't find "Mozilla Firefox".

perhaps what would be better is if the option rejected when the first search letter(s) dont match the lefthand side of ANY word in the filename?

FARR already gives a strong bonus to such situations -- it's one of the ways it tries to do a good job of ranking results -- but i could add an option to reject violations..
6290
Thank, colin!

6291
Absolutely, i will add the option asap.

Developer's Corner / Re: Syntax in Different Programming Languages

Very related: http://hyperpolyglot.org/
Programming Languages - commonly used features in a side-by-side format

I like this one -- no filler just tables showing how small snippets of code would look in different languages.
6293
I just tested the zip, and it's fine.
Let me tell you what can happen that would explain your problem -- sometimes when a download gets interrupted for some network reason, the browser thinks it downloaded it fine, and so all future attempts to download the file give you the same bad partial file.  It's a real flaw and leads to huge amount of confusion.

What you should do is try using another different web browser to download the file -- and let us know if that works.  You could also try clearing the "cache" of your web browser, though its not clear to me how to do that in all cases.

Living Room / Astonishing comics that 'save your game' when you turn the page
« Last post by mouser on March 25, 2015, 07:52 PM »
This is a nice article about Jason Shiga, who was inspired by the choose-your-own-adventure books, where every page has some choices you can make that instruct you to turn to different pages which alter the storyline. Jason has been stretching the idea to introduce some more complex ways of interacting with comic stories.. One even has a kind of "inventory" system.

Every page is sliced in half, separating the comic into two parts. The top half is where the story unfolds, while the bottom half displays the contents of your suitcase. The two sides are connected by an intricate system of page-turning: When you see a number inside a square, you flip to a page in the top half of the comic, advancing the story; when you see a number inside a circle, you flip to a page on the bottom, adding and removing items from your suitcase.

Very cool stuff -- seems like these comics would make great mind-expanding gifts for young kids.

Android Apps / Re: One category doesn't sync - v. 1.84
« Last post by mouser on March 25, 2015, 07:08 PM »
How strange..
Can you do try some tests..
Are you setting that even if you update the item again on either device, it never syncs between the two devices?
Can you update (click NOW) for the item that isnt syncing and try again -- and try editing the categories, to make sure nothing is set to "hidden" -- it's hard for me to imagine why it would consistently fail to update one item while doing the others.
And check around to make sure the item isnt hiding in another section?
And if you create a new item on once device, does it sync to the others?
Must be some explanation..

oops, i see now your update says it started working again.. let me know if it acts up again.

On the Scrolling Capture dialog, before it begins scrolling, on the left hand side about half way down is a place to limit the memory used.
Try changing from default of 500 (mb) to like 5000.  See if that helps.

Oops, I missed that they were asking for some other program made by some company not related to DonationCoder -- I'm afraid you'll have to go to them for the key to that!
