Living Room / Re: Computer problem, maybe you can help
« Last post by Lashiec on July 28, 2008, 05:56 PM »
This sounds very much like the problem a friend of mine had a while ago. His mother was working with Office when their cat passed around the back of computer and... bang! the computer stopped working.

After another friend tried everything he knew over the phone, and I did the same in his house, the only thing I could think to get the computer working again was that the motherboard has some problem (maybe it was just the CMOS, who knows...) and such it had to be replaced. A few days later, and with a new mobo in place, everything was fine again. And the symptoms were pretty much the same.

But it's not google, so who cares? :)

And this is exactly why Microsoft (or any other aspiring search engine) is in trouble ;D

General Software Discussion / Re: Launchy is now available for Linux (!)
« Last post by Lashiec on July 28, 2008, 04:32 PM »
The big problem Launchy faces in comparison with GNOME Do is lack of system integration. Thanks to its plugin system, you can search and play music in Amarok, or chat with your contacts in Pidgin, which IMO is the next step in launchers evolution (and well, what everyone dreams to do with their launcher of choice).

Still, it's nice to see more competition in the platform, even if Launchy developer seems to lack development time, considering the absence of new versions for a time, and how much it took to get a Linux version (he still has the Mac OS X version as well). I guess not every developer can release new versions every day ;)

Living Room / Re: Zip File Bombs
« Last post by Lashiec on July 28, 2008, 04:14 PM »
Old trick, I didn't check the rest of the scanners, but avast! and a-squared detect compressed file bombs without problems. What's more, avast! usually ignores compressed files if the decompressed size surpass a certain value.

Besides, apart from leaving the computer unusable (an offline DoS attack), there's really no much use to them for malware writers. Well, you will be pissed for a few seconds before reaching for the "Reset" button ;D

Wasn't/isn't there an AV product that used to allow you to autoflag as suspicious any archive that nested more than nn-levels deep? I seem to remember there was one that did. Problem is I've dated so many that I can't remember names.

AntiVir lets you define the maximum level of recursion in a compressed file (20 as a default), but as far as I know, it just ignores those that go over the limit.

Errrrr, what an embarrassment, I forgot the subfolders :-[

  • TED Notepad: %programfiles%\TED Notepad\TedNPad.exe
  • WinRAR: %programfiles%\WinRAR\WinRAR.exe
  • WinUAE: %programfiles%\WinUAE\winuae.exe

Cool, I'll experiment with the .ini support later. As for the application paths:

  • TED Notepad: %programfiles%\TedNPad.exe
  • WinRAR: %programfiles%\WinRAR.exe
  • WinUAE: %programfiles%\winuae.exe

General Software Discussion / Re: Logitech's Setpoint
« Last post by Lashiec on July 22, 2008, 08:11 PM »
The only thing I don't like about SetPoint is lack of configuration for some things, in my case media players, but it's easily solved with a text editor, Google, and some tweaking here and there. Other than that, I'm happy with them :)

Living Room / Re: Wordle: Create Beautiful Word Clouds
« Last post by Lashiec on July 22, 2008, 07:52 PM »
I made this cloud using an old article I particularly like:

Screenshot - 23_07_2008 , 2_49_28.png

Or how about generating a cloud for a speech (or speeches) given by the politico of your choice?
Or a series of official statments on a hot topic?

I'm afraid we'd only get a word out of it: PR ;D

i think it would be fun if we made tshirts like this maybe for the fundraiser.
(either a tag cloud for the site itself or like i said for the specific person who is getting the tshirt made out of their post text).

we could make mugs from it too of course, it's a kind of cool idea.

The T-shirt idea sounds good, a philosophical touch in clothing :)

They surely know how to make a good impression: kills Flash, prevents keylogging in the forum (erm, what?), and crashes the browser when I'm going to see "Unread posts". This seems to maintain a terrible balance between ease of use and level of security, and errs too much into paranoia. So I guess I won't use it, thanks for the heads up anyway :)

Lashiec, what other naming conventions do you have in mind?

What TucknDar said. There are others, but practically of them are personal conventions, instead of something extended, except for those which use the same name as the folder or the album to which the cover belongs.

Now I know why i never liked the Awesomebar as much as i did farr, after installing Enter Select 3 pressing enter launches the first result like farr does. Nais!

I wonder if there is a extension to mimick FARR, numbering results, and using the NumPad to launch them...

Yeah, but Viacom and Google agreed to anonymize user information before handing out the info, otherwise Viacom would be suing the entire Internet. Not that it changes the fact that the information is still there.

Well, 1 GB for 80 tabs is not exactly a conservative usage of memory (nor very normal). I say this because the other day I had around 200 tabs in Opera, and memory usage was around 450 MB (for the browser, not total usage)

Were you using Facebook? ;D

Just checking this morning the release notes of 3.0.1, and I noticed a link to the SafeBrowsing privacy policy. I wish that Google would discard so soon logs from their other services.

The JavaScript file included says it shows the "folder.jpg" file contained in the specified path (I guess that also includes subfolders). That's a defacto standard, so it should work with most media players, although it would be nice if a few more frequent naming conventions were included.

EDIT: Rewording

As long as you don't go over the Commit Charge Limit (which you can see in justice's shot), you shouldn't worry. Although 1.5 and 1.9 GB of commit charge are pretty high figures, I rarely reach 1.5 even when playing the latest games (I'm usually between 350-700), so you two must be running tons of apps (or Firefox 2 :P)

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows update Vs Ubuntu Update

Uh, no, what it comes out every Tuesday are security updates mostly (at least on XP). The hotfixes are scattered around Microsoft sites.

General Software Discussion / Re: 20 things Windows 7 should have
« Last post by Lashiec on July 16, 2008, 11:42 AM »
Some of the things are probably coming: UAC refinements, modularization, virtualization... while others sound like minor personal nitpicks, and the rest are probably of no use to normal users, and just extra cruft for Windows to please power users who already know where to find this functionality. Also, the article keeps pushing the confusion over MinWin, which has reached a level of fact now, when it was just a misunderstanding.

I'd like to see Windows dropping legacy support, but I don't know if it's going to actually happen. While maybe programs designed for older Windows versions (up to XP) won't run directly (they'll need virtualization), the often desired OS redesign will have to wait 'til Midori.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows update Vs Ubuntu Update
« Last post by Lashiec on July 16, 2008, 10:57 AM »
Both Windows and Linux require tons of updates on a monthly basis, either for the operating system, or for the software you use. In the case of Linux, I guess things could be improved if you tailor the distro to your needs.

It would be nice if there was a way to update everything from Windows Update, but in that case, there should be a way to cleanly uninstall any piece of software, since some apps leave many things behind. Mac OS X is a different thing, because its updates are not nearly as frequent, and so, they're fairly bigger, but they also improve things and introduce minor new features, so in a way they can be considered Service Packs.

Also, one thing it's usually forgotten, it's that Windows Update rarely includes hotfixes, the sole reason XP was not perfect for me until SP3.

I do think though that we are going to have to start a new thread entitled "How to clean up your work space in 10 easy steps"..

Another take:

 1) Buy a desk with a few big drawers
 2) Put the computer in the desk
 3) Put the crap in the drawers

Works good for me :)

Hahaha, cool desk allen!

Mmmm, pretty interesting stuff. Being a disaster with HTML, I hope these articles will prove useful to me. It's a shame the awareness for web standards might no be taken to a new level giving the level of awareness of major tech sites of this announcement :(
