Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR in other languages?
« Last post by mouser on April 10, 2015, 09:23 AM »
Would it be difficult to make FARR also search for localized names and match them to the respective elements?

Hi raingros,
Sorry for the delay in replying!
I am going to add a new feature to farr very shortly that will let you very easily manage a simple text list of search "translations", so you could easily have a list of things like
rechner = calc

Then whenever you type rechner it will behave like you typed "calc".

(aliases can do this kind of thing but they are more time consuming to create and manage -- this will let you do common things more easily).

Screenshot Captor / Re: SUGGESTION: Maximum Screen Size
« Last post by mouser on April 10, 2015, 08:32 AM »
Minor update, same url -- standalone shot window will now auto hide during captures, if option is set to hide main window during capture -- makes it a little easier to keep a small shot window on screen while working.

Ok I have implemented my first pass at a mode where you can separate the main screenshot panel from the rest of the interface..
We'll have to see how well it feels in practice..

  • Download alpha test version (4.9.6 ALPHA) from here (or portable).

Essentially the way it works is from the View menu you can toggle a standalone screenshot window.  This window shows ONLY the screenshot, nothing else, and can be maximized on another monitor.  The main interface area is now used to display a full panel of thumbnails, making it an especially nice mode for browsing large numbers of screenshots (and don't forget you have a new image search bar you can toggle for quick searching of images).

As a side benefit, the standalone screenshot mode can be made quite small and kept on screen while you take new screenshots -- something that people have requested in the past.

The main difficulty i think is going to be that people have different workflows in mind, and this mode i've implemented may be slightly schizophrenic..
This mode might be best for people who have 2 or more monitors and want the main interface on one monitor and current screenshot on another.
It will be less convenient for people who want the interface on one monitor and want a quick keyboard toggle between full screen and normal mode -- we may have to add something for those people.
Because you can easily resize the standalone window to be a small floating window, it can also be used to keep the current(last) screenshot always visible on screen while you do other stuff -- that's something people have asked for in the past. BUT the nature of this standalone window probably makes it less than ideal for people who want THIS functionality, since it REPLACES the main interface window and is a bit more heavy weight, versus a simple little floating COPY of the the current screenshot.

In short, we're going to have to use this alpha build to figure out what kinds of work modes people really want and expect to use with this, and try to make that work well..  For now, lets just try to see if this helps figure out what people really want.

Anyway, let me know!

I think Iain's comments are worth considering -- as the author of Screenshot Captor, I am quite proud of it's scanning features, but still if your only use of it is to help with scanning, and you have no interest in manipulating the images afterwards using SC tools, then perhaps specialized scanner software is the way to go.

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR as bookmark manager?
« Last post by mouser on April 09, 2015, 11:36 AM »
The special #filecontents command might be useful to you -- it will let you specify the list of items to search through in a simple text file, so you can make a simple alias and then edit your standalone text file with your bookmark urls.
See the tutorial here: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=17270.0 (and maybe this thread as well).

I did at one point make a firefox bookmark searcher plugin, but it's harder to use now that firefox changed their bookmark storage format (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=7919.0)

That's an interesting question.. Right now there is currently no way to do that -- mainly because SC can't view PDF files so it really wants to save a copy in a file format it can understand.
Let me give a little more thought to this, but I would encourage you to consider whether it might be something you could live with, and just occasionally delete the screenshot files..

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Password problem
« Last post by mouser on April 08, 2015, 09:41 PM »
hmm.. it should work on the originating program that you copy from, but i see now the problem -- hotkeyz is doing that actual pasting into your target program, so when CHS checks to see where the clip came from, it's getting fooled into thinking its from metapad instead of hotkeyz, since the current window is in metapad..  no easy solution i'm afraid..

You could toggle CHS on an off from the system tray -- and i could add a hotkey to quickly do that.. that might be next best solution..

Or perhaps hotkeyz (or another similar program) could be configured to use the security flag when copying info to the clipboard, which would solve the problem as well.

You can tell CHS to ignore capturing clips from certain applications.. might that help?  (it's on the Capture Options tab).
In addition, by default CHS knows not to copy clips maintained by password tools that properly mark sensitive information when copying it to the clipboard -- if you haven't tried one of those tools, I highly recommend them (KeePass is one good free one).

Whatever my thoughts on google, this is still a very interesting development..

I am quite skeptical about the widespread value of running android apps on the desktop, because android apps are designed for a small device with no keyboard and mouse -- resulting in a user interface very well suited for a small mobile touchscreen, but poorly suited to take advantage of desktop features.

However, there will surely be some use cases where being able to run a mobile app on the desktop will be a real win -- apps where performance and usability is not essential, but where simply being able to access the app will outweigh any deficiencies in the experience.

Miles, I had the same reaction -- it's not quite as bad as saying "We refuse to download this software because it will probably give you cancer", but you can see where we are going -- scaring people away from downloading stuff made outside of their channels.
The intentions in this case may be good -- to keep people from installing malware -- but independent developers are going to suffer.

Those of you who have read my posts on Google know that I view the company quite suspiciously.. They are masters of publicity and self-promotion and always find ways to get their hands into everything..  Often in roundabout ways like a spider that weaves a trap you don't realize you are in until it's too late.  Which is not to say that the stuff they create isn't often quite excellent and useful.

So here's a predictable, and yet still intriguing, new way of extending google tentacles, the ability to run Android apps on windows using the Chrome Web Browser.

Google’s convergence of Chrome and Android is taking a big step forward this week. After launching a limited App Runtime for Chrome (ARC) back in September, Google is expanding its beta project to allow Android apps to run on Windows, OS X, and Linux. It’s an early experiment designed primarily for developers, but anyone can now download an APK of an existing Android app and launch it on a Windows / Linux PC, Mac, or Chromebook.

There are a bunch of serious academic tools for creating bibliographies -- many specialized for MS Word.
The most well known is EndNote, but there are free options as well.

Here's a good wikipedia page comparing some: http://en.wikipedia...._management_software

not a bad idea..
however, i think the most important thing to need to test is the regex, and if you look carefully there is a place to test the regex in the alias edit dialog.
