Living Room / Early colour film process
« Last post by Carol Haynes on April 25, 2006, 06:10 PM »
There is an utterly fascinating three part TV series on BBC2 in the UK at the moment about the pioneering film-maker Claude Friese-Greene who, with his father, invented a prototype colour film system in the 1920s. He set of on a journey the lebgth of Britain filming as he went in order to show off his new technique. It was shown in episodes at cinemas and also sold to the US.

The first two (of three) episodes are available for viewing online (only until May 9th though) - and the entire archive of his film is also available to view (it is silent).

The process he used was quite unusal and is explained in some detail in episode 2. Basically the idea was to enable all cinemas to be able to show colour film without having to invest in new equipment. Incredibly innovative.

Add to that the human drama - particularly the lady (ep. 2) who was filmed with her brothers just before her mother died and the family was split, never to be reunited - and it is really something special.

(PS If you use URL Snooper to track down the episodes and view offline, Streambox works fine, you can easily find the URL for episode 3 as well which you can download but it is blocked from viewing online until next week after the episode airs)

Looks really good - how about a second one with 'advanced features' ? (Then dummies like me may be able to use it more effectively - I always lose the will to live when Regular Expressions get mentioned ;))

According to Babelfish that translates to:

Horror what, nikhrena I do not understand, but och I want gold small key from the closet of dad of Porta..... Tsela, Vash to the eyelids. Bird, which on the wire.

English, if you please?

Sorry - none the wiser ... so much for automated translations!!!

Had a quick look - they don't seem to be able to seel outside the US (except for an older version). Can't quite see why they need an export license if they can already sell the older version ???

One way you could do this is to set up a RAM disc on your computer so that when the computer is restarted the contents of that disc is lost and then copy stuff there.

If you want to use stuff that is encrypted on a CD it has to be copied somewhere on your system to be able to read it, even if it is only a temporary file.

To continue the Dead Ringers theme ... here are some brilliant sketches from the BBC Radio 4 series based around Doctor Who.

Most of these are also Jon Culshaw (who spoofed James Blunt) pretending to be Dr Who calling genuinely perplexed members of the public!

I really love these telephone conversations, but I especially loved his telephone spoofs where he pretended to be William Hague (the former conservative leader) calling various people. Here is an example (Quote from the website "The American election in 2000 is up in the air. William Hague offers to help.")

To here even more (though not all John Culshaw) go to http://www.bbc.co.uk...y/deadringers/audio/

mouser, here is one attempt for the main theme of the podcast, let me know if you like it or not.  In case you haven't noticed, I have really old fashioned musical sensibility.  You won't hear too much stuff that sounds like it came within the last 25 years from me.  I haven't named this song yet, so feel free to come up with titles.

If you guys like it, I'll record it again, and polish it up.

Sock it to 'em baby ... sounds great.

You sign up for a yahoo email address (I'm not sure but I think this service is only available if you have a paid subscription email service - but it is still cheap ... I get mine free from my ISP). Once you have an account in options you can go to "address guard" and set up a prefix for all you guarded addresses and then each time you want a new disposable address you go to the address guard page and enter the email address part you want. You then end up with an email address of the form [email protected] which you can keep and use as long as you want or ditch.

You can have up to 500 of these addresses active.

I have had a slightly odd problem with DimSaver active in that my Explorer windows seem to refresh regularly. It stops when I change to a different screen saver. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just my screwed up system?

as for .cpl and .msc: right now farr will find any files by filename,
BUT it won't your control panel items if that is what you are asking -
this is something quite a few people have asked for and it's on the
todo list for v2 which is coming soon.  so it will be in an upcoming
version there is no doubt about it.

Don't forget there is an easy workaround to the Control Panel Problem. Simply make a folder (which can be searched) and drag all your control panel icons to that folder (just hit Ctrl A and then drag them all to the folder). It should create a set of shortcuts, with identical names as your control panel applets, which will then be searched and allow control panel items to be run from F&RR.

wr975 do you have Norton's Recyle Bin installed (it gets installed automatically with a number of their products) in which case it saves stuff you have dumped even when you empty the recycle bin. You can tell if it is installed as it generally changes the icon for the recycle bin and there should be right menu items for it.

Living Room / Re: Anyone actually use rewriteable media?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on April 21, 2006, 04:48 AM »
That's very interesting Carol.  Did you have similar experiences with CDRW?  Or is DVDRW much more reliable/stable than the CD's were?

How about this, would you be comfortable to use DVDRW to backup data?  I don't mean as your main backup, but as a sort of less important secondary backup?

I only had a very brief dabble with CDRWs and didn't like them much. I have about a dozen of them sitting on my floor at the moment unused - and probably 5 years old!

I din't use DVD-RW to store video etc. simply because it is more expensive but I do reuse them to record TV regularly and have had no problems (I have been using Verbatim and TraxData discs equally and both seem to work fine on my machine but lots of machines are a bit picky about what discs to use anyway). If I decide to keep a recording I run it through TSUNAMI DVD Author, cut out ads etc. and add a menu and then make a disc label (well actually I use InkJet printable DVD-R disc and +R discs - mostly Ritek as they are really cheap and their dye has a good reputation). I haven't had any go bad yet - though I have noticed the occasional problem playing computer produced discs on my DVD Cinema system (getting blocky breakdown) but I don't know if this is the discs or my Plextor DVD writer. It hasn't happened often and when it has I have recovered the discs easily by simply making a new copy with Nero on the PC (from the disc that doesn't play well).

As for data - I have to confess I rarely burn stuff to DVD these days. I usually do incremental backups to a separate hard disc and then periodically do a new backup which I burn. When I do burn backups I tend to use DVD-R or DVD+R discs simply  because they are cheap and I am anal about keeping old backups. Plus DVD-RW discs are expensive and slower to write and the need to erase them is extremely time consuming.

I use DVD-RW all the time to video stuff off the TV and then use the computer to edit what I want to keep onto DVD-R or DVD+R formats. That way I can edit my movies etc. without usings two discs each time. Out of hundreds of DVD-RW recordings I have only had one disc go bad - and I recovered the recording using ISO buster ...

I don't know about which is best but www.blogger.com looks pretty straightforward to use and is free.

For moving stuff how about downloading w.bloggar (see here https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3163.0). That allows you to upload and download articles from your blog for a variety of services including blogger.com and some self hosting packages such as Drupal.

I know  .... but it is nice to have it confirmed  :-[

She's in the UK for a few more weeks - I'm wondering if it is possible/worth a 200 mile round trip to see her again before she returns to the US and unlikely to be over here again for up to 5 years! On balance I think it probably is - just got to see if it is practical to get there at the right time!

Living Room / Donation based MP3 Music
« Last post by Carol Haynes on April 20, 2006, 11:13 AM »
Went to see Janis Ian last night in concert. What a brilliant show!

She has always had radical views on music writing and distribution (her article is mentioned in another thread here)

For younger people on this site who have never discovered Janis's music (she has only been recording and playing for around 40 years and still sounds as fresh and radical!) you can download some of her songs in MP3 format from here website and have a listen. Nice idea to some songs freely available - but note the donation box at the bottom, or better still buy a CD from the site if you like her music. All proceeds from merchandising go to the "Pearl Foundation" which provides scholarships and other funding to allow mature students to go to college if they missed out when younger. Enjoy!

One of the nice things about last night was I sent her an email after the show. It was nice when I logged in this afternoon to find a personal reply waiting ;)

Basic / Re: What flavors of basic?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on April 20, 2006, 11:01 AM »
How about having a sticky "Before posting here read this" topic stating the posting code in the Basic section (by the way that should be BASIC, all capitals) should be prefixed by the BASIC flavour at the beginning of the thread title. Same for C/C++ etc. that way similar issues in different flavours are dealt with in one place rather than scattered where many won't look?

eg. if someone is using VB then they are only likely to look in the VB section, whereas a thread "FSBL how do I ..." may have application to more than one language flavour.

Backup Guide / Re: Acronis now does backup of individual files/folders
« Last post by Carol Haynes on April 20, 2006, 04:07 AM »
Thanks for pointing that out and welcome.

Have to say though if you want file level backup Acronis isn't the software you want as it has extremely basic and limited functionality. I use Acronis for partition level backup and there it works fine.

Have a look at Genie Backup Manager Pro if you want to do file level backup or even Windows Backup (included for free with Windows 200/XP) which has far better functionality than Acronis.

There is a 50% discount for site members on Genie Backup Pro, you can read a review here

Best Music Service / Re: tech crunch article comparing music services
« Last post by Carol Haynes on April 19, 2006, 09:24 AM »
Actually I am just getting started (after too long) using Yahoo's service which provides 500 disposable emails per account.

For those who don't know it works like this ...

You have you main account id which provides you emails address.

Withing the options section there is "Address Guard" in which you register a different id (say eg. nospam .... but that's bound to be gone!). Then you can set up  up to 500 email addresses in the format [email protected] where xxx is a chosen address for the service you are signing up for. For example if you were singing up to DC for newsletters you might choose [email protected].

All of these throwaway address you create are automatically delivered at your main address and can be filtered like ordinary mail if you want. You can even post using the dummy address.

Now you sign up with that address to DC only. If spam starts to arrive on that address you know where the address originated from and you can simply delete the dummy address. It doesn't affect any of your other subscriptions and because the email address doesn't contain any details of your main account name it can't be used to spam you mail inbox.

Works great - just wish I had started using it a while ago.

Not that I have been aware of. You could always use a throw away email address though just for that purpose.
