Hi crabby3
how exactly did you try to open the file in WordPad?
Was it a file that was previously opened and you just clicked it in the recently opened list?

If you feel it didnt work properly I see this in the comments for that page you link to:

link above is actually for XP so not sure if helpful

Living Room / Re: More YouTube Censorship
« Last post by tomos on April 05, 2012, 01:50 PM »
This video has been removed as a violation of YouTube's policy
prohibiting content designed to harass, bully or threaten

Dunno what google are thinking - **
I presume they were put under (a lot of?) pressure to remove this, but even so, what kind of response did they expect...

I saw the video the other day, and all he did was poke fun at this professor:

looks like you're poking fun a bit at the professor as well :p
She does seem to mostly have a fairly quirky expression, but I cant help wondering if the first pic you show is photoshopped (*not* saying you had anything to do with it if it is!)

** [edit] then again, I havent seen the video - is it on show anywhere else? [/edit]

[another_edit] here it is. I'd censor it for not being funny; for being very personal (harrassing bullying?); but I dont believe in censorship myself, &, I suppose it's besides the point - but I've seen lots worse on youtube [/another_edit]

-yes, Windows will see "My (your) Pictures" as one system folder, even if you split it ;-)
you just need to tell it to.

anyone know how exactly that's done in Vista? (moving My Docs etc)

Can I move stuff that's stored on C: drive to D: drive ?  Will this cause any problems or issues?  :tellme:

I'm almost out of memory (disk space) on C: but D: is mostly unused.  I want to move everything to D: except the Users folder.

"My" Documents/photos/etc are often moved to the second partition - that is possible, but I'm not a Vista user, so not sure how difficult it is in Vista.
Hopefully someone else will chip in with more info there.

When you say "I want to move everything to D: except the Users folder" were you thinking of moving all the software? That's not so possible. Or is there other stuff on C: ?

An interesting article  in Wired provides yet another example of how content providers would rather protect their intellectual property from theft than make it worthwhile for people to pay for it.

in particular, how font foundries were afraid of their fonts being ripped off, so they didn't give licenses for html5 or PDF - so many magazines used PNGs until now...

"50 Words for Snow" - Kate Bush's album from last year - it's growing on me -
it's very, eh - meditative I guess you could say...

that's in a playlist - the first 7 vids are the tracks from the album.
I especially like the first four tracks myself. The 4th video is blocked here, probably cause it was a single - here's another link for it (the single version), seeing as it's one of my favourites

« Last post by tomos on April 03, 2012, 02:58 PM »
I'd spring the extra $35 and get the i5-2500K - these things are probably the best 'bang for buck' CPU around, you can go up to 4.3GHz by just changing the multiplier, all on the stock HSF.

I'm no expert, but when buying myself (autumn last year) I read a few times that this one was best value/"bang for buck". The extra $80 (comparing with Carols link above) will get you more, but not really a whole lot more by the sounds of it.
So unless you really plan to use that extra, or if you just have the dosh... :D

I was never a big comic fan growing up, but a friend of mine used get The Victor in the 70's so I read a bit of that (all I can remember now are the dramatic war stories, very propaganda-ish in retrospect).

dextronet is repeating the upgrade offer they also gave via Bits du Jour:

just to remind any trigger happy purchasers of the possible cons to this purchase:

seems very expensive to me, especially in the context of the pro version being demeaned.

It's extremely expensive, and now those who shelled out for the Pro version are left hanging, as new features will go into the Ultimate version mostly. In a three-tier scheme like this, the top version is usually geared toward enterprise environments (multi-user database, security, advanced connectivity or various data exchange options, etc). But to add a spell-checker module (most likely just a third-party component) and some icons and call it "ultimate" is quite... wrong IMO.

General Software Discussion / Re: TicTac 1.7.0.0
« Last post by tomos on April 02, 2012, 10:21 AM »
TicTac Lite is available from the same page. It works the same as TicTac, but instead of using a Tray Icon Menu, it just uses an invisible window and hotkeys. I implemented it as a vc++ Win32 message loop with no icons or other resources to keep it small.

When run, if it loads successfully you should hear a chime. Press Alt-F1 for About box(with opportunity to donate.) :)  Press Win-NumberPad0 to get a Quit confirmation dialog.  Win-NumPad1 - 9 moves the active window same as TicTac.

I'm not very familiar with the hotkeys to move windows in Windows 7, so I dont know if it's worthwhile using TicTac/Lite (?)

Anyways - on Win7 64bit - I tried running TicTac Lite
  • "normally"
  • as admin
  • in XP SP3 comaptible mode

each time, I got this message:

---------------------------
TicTacLite
---------------------------
Could Not Register Win-NumPad 0 Quit Hotkey - Aborting!
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

what do you reckon? :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9... cm vs. in
« Last post by tomos on March 30, 2012, 03:01 PM »

So, (the plot thickens?) -
I guess it could also be possible that PSP is just guessing the size - especially if it's in inches, but also even if shown in metric...

You could test it by opening PNGs with a different resolution/dpi to the standard that you're always seeing in PSP.

General Software Discussion / Re: Jasc Paint Shop Pro 9... cm vs. in
« Last post by tomos on March 30, 2012, 02:58 PM »
After a quick look, it seems as though the png image that crabby has that shows info in inches in PSP is actually lacking any DPI info in it, making PSP use a default and not showing dpi.  I think that's what's happening.

so the programme just desnt know the actual size of the image and is just guessing/using a default setting, say 96dpi, or 72dpi ?

FWIW, I realise now that my ancient Photoshop (5,5) does not recognise any dpi info in PNGs. Screenshots from mouser's SC - show at 96dpi in SC but at 72dpi in Photoshop...
If I change the dpi in SC it still doesnt change in Photoshop.

^ thanks Crabby, but my problem wasnt with screenshots at all (but *was* with PNG files.) Not important to me anyways as it's not a current problem for me.

The solution was meant to be vague... there didn't seem to be much interest in my this problem...   :(

Not sure where you get that from - you got lots of replies :) (I've started threads that have gotten no replies lol)
We just thought (incorrectly) that the problem was with PSP, until Jibz pointed out above, the way that PNGs are either set to "no-units" or metric.
6168
Anyways, like I said... A bit ranty...

understandably!

Found a solution to this PNG-Metric-grabbing issue... and the problem doesn't seem to be related to my Paint Shop Pro.

aren't you going to tell us what it is :D
- I could actually use a solution for that (I have had the problem of my Photoshop not being able to read size of image files (I think it was with pngs) - it just showed them at 72dpi.

You can't make this stuff up! ;D

I edited post above re importing files, but I also wanted to bump the question:

what are the implications (pros/cons) of turning on/off "Auto-Syncing Metadata"?
I presume,
for photos that have not been catalogued in another programme, it will only sync tags etc added manually in Daminion?
6173
Dextronet has recently sent me this (I'm a registered user of the Pro version):

We've recently launched new Ultimate edition of Swift To-Do List. Compared to
Professional, it adds these new features:

1) 100 new tree icons (so there is no 244 in total in Ultimate!)
2) Two-line displaying of too long task names
3) Spellchecker for notes and memos
4) Multi-level numbered lists in notes and memos (outlines)
5) Other extra Ultimate-only features that will be added in the future as free Ultimate-only upgrades.

I started with the Standard version in 2007, later upgraded to Pro. That was already quite expensive. Now in a classic bait-and-switch, they are offering a new "Ultimate" version... which has more icons and a spell-checker and a promise... for $199.95 (regular price).

seems very expensive to me, especially in the context of the pro version being demeaned.

Perhaps there is some misunderstanding and you think that someone is upset about your question/request -- not at all.

yes - not at all here too :D

I think (especially after mouser's experimenting) it's actually got nothing to do with the image, but has to do with the programme settings. In my ancient version of photoshop I can choose to look at the resolution in terms of pixels-per-inch (dpi), or pixels-per-cm.

Living Room / Re: What are your experiences with payment providers?
« Last post by tomos on March 25, 2012, 10:47 AM »
Do you issue a receipt for payment? If so another solution would be to issue a VAT receipt to EU businesses and they can claim back the VAT themselves - they do it all the time because many suppliers don't supply pre-tax.
-Carol Haynes (March 25, 2012, 10:16 AM)

but then, IIUC, josant would have to pay the VAT to [not sure who exactly - some government!]
