General Software Discussion / Re: Steam, and customer satisfaction
« Last post by wraith808 on May 05, 2013, 09:44 PM »
But the software publishers are selling a product that is separate to internet.

And that's why I said it seems your problem is Activision (publisher) vs. Steam (distribution platform).  That, and the hackers that make them take such extremes.  CoD hasn't really been a single-player game for a long time.  They make their money because people play online.  And so, day zero, the game is already outdated.  That's a problem for physical sales.

Latest installment is CoD MW3.  I couldn't even install it without a steam connection (hang on, didn't i just pay good money for this?).  I live in a rural area so even connecting to Steam can be a trial.  It eventually installed fine (EGAD!! requires 35G of disk space!!) but when I went to play, steam said, hang on, there's an update (WTF? I just paid for this and now you're telling me I can only play on your terms?).  The update was only (!!) a few hundred Mb, so I let it update.

This doesn't really seem a steam problem as much as an Activision problem.  They are selling you a product on DVD that is already outdated, and cannot be played unless it is updated.  That's your problem right there.  It sucks that it is that way, but lets call a spade a spade.  You can also uncheck the keep automatically updated, but I don't think that will help you in this case.  The only part of it that was truly steam was the initial install and update.  The other part is all on Activision.

markdown - isn't that what Wikipedia uses?
(if so, go to a page there Tao, and click edit to see what it looks like)

No, Wikipedia doesn't use it.  It uses its own syntax, which shares some similarities, but is not Markdown.  For well known sites that use Markdown, refer to GitHub, reddit and Stack Overflow.

Wordpress is good because the deployment on the server is easy and hosted platform is also free and easy to use. If the ghost can do that then well, it would be better. but if the ghost is built on something like rails or say node.js then I dont think there would be more takers.

It is built on node.js (as stated in the link), and uses by default SQLLite through JugglingDB ORM.  I was a bit concerned about the use of node.js, but a couple of things mitigate this- first they are using the Express framework (which is already easy to deploy), and they are packaging using NPM, making it even easier.

^ My thoughts, said in a more concise and better way.

One of the apparent raison d'etre of Ghost is being a simpler WordPress. I never saw WordPress as complex so I don't get that. Otherwise a simple attractive blogging platform is nice.

We're not exactly typical :)  Believe me... working with a few different people outside of the tech sphere on their sites, I can see their frustrations as indications that Wordpress has a few problems on the UX front.

I do know that wordpress, however, is very simple to setup on many different platforms; I've my own reservations on Ghost being as easy to set up.  It would be nice, however.  I love Markdown, and for that reason alone, I want this to succeed. :)

Also, a stretch goal has been announced - if they reach £250,000, every backer will receive free hosted setup for a year.

Living Room / One year without the internet: An Interesting Read
« Last post by wraith808 on May 02, 2013, 02:42 PM »
http://www.theverge....without-the-internet

I was wrong.

One year ago I left the internet. I thought it was making me unproductive. I thought it lacked meaning. I thought it was "corrupting my soul."

It's a been a year now since I "surfed the web" or "checked my email" or "liked" anything with a figurative rather than literal thumbs up. I've managed to stay disconnected, just like I planned. I'm internet free.

And now I'm supposed to tell you how it solved all my problems. I'm supposed to be enlightened. I'm supposed to be more "real," now. More perfect.

But instead it's 8PM and I just woke up. I slept all day, woke with eight voicemails on my phone from friends and coworkers. I went to my coffee shop to consume dinner, the Knicks game, my two newspapers, and a copy of The New Yorker. And now I'm watching Toy Story while I glance occasionally at the blinking cursor in this text document, willing it to write itself, willing it to generate the epiphanies my life has failed to produce.

I didn't want to meet this Paul at the tail end of my yearlong journey.

A great read, especially this part...

By late 2012, I'd learned how to make a new style of wrong choices off the internet. I abandoned my positive offline habits, and discovered new offline vices. Instead of taking boredom and lack of stimulation and turning them into learning and creativity, I turned toward passive consumption and social retreat.

I find that after reading that article I feel better since I'd come to that enlightenment without a year sans internet. It doesn't matter what medium(s) you have, it's the choices and priorities that you make that make the difference.

I actually tried this extension but for some reason, this does not work. I mean I installed this and on a webpage, when I right clicked on an image and selected the option Cloudsave > Save as > skydrive, it just says "saving" but this window remains for a long time and nothing happens. I have to cancel this window. I tried on 2 to 3 images

I think it says in the notes on the extension that it isn't ready for prime time yet in regards to skydrive, i.e.

minus.com works now, but Skydrive is still not ready yet, because Microsoft requires a redirect domain for a web app to use their Live connect API, but I don't have any domain right now;

It just strikes me as a dangerously tempting target.

This.  And anything can be broken given the time and effort- the reward just has to make it worth it. Linking any login to a financial entity = bad idea IMO.

^ Heh.  Good one.  And good comic too!

Just an FYI - Basically, it appears that you're paying for BCWipe- the vendor himself couldn't give a usecase where it would be better than truecrypt other than "it includes BCWipe".
6147
That's a presumptive statement. Most AV's default to automatically "cleaning" high risk files... which means deleting them. "New users" wouldn’t yet know to configure it any differently.

+1.

Why do people use these plugins, anyway?  I haven't really seen a need (which is why none of my client sites nor my sites have the problem).

That's a pretty impressive list!  Thanks for the giveaways... I didn't win the CK2, so I won't enter... but this exposure is making me think about getting the base game...
