Living Room / Windows XP Recovery Console - tweak!
« Last post by Carol Haynes on May 05, 2006, 10:09 AM »
An article posted by Fred Langa which allows you to use Windows XP Recovery Console as a form of XP-DOS and have access to all of you hard discs and files etc. (Normally you have very restricted access and can't use wild cards etc.)

See:

http://www.informati...?articleID=187000225

(This is the print version that shows the whole article on one page without all the ads and other paraphenalia).

The appliance of science - being a bit of  a climate buff I found this and interesting (short) read:

If anyone is interested you can pop over to http://www.sciencemag.org and see if you can find the article. I have looked but can't find it!

Actually in the days Apple made those kind of Macs you needed something like that just as a user. All the Macphiles loved them but I never seemed to be able to use one for more than about 5 minutes without getting an "Apple Bomb" with a cryptic undocumented error code (a bit like Windows BSODS). It didn't help I had to act as support for an AppleTalk network - troubleshooting the things was a nightmare!

General Software Discussion / Re: Do you use RSS feeds?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on May 05, 2006, 03:57 AM »
You don't need to add RSS feeds to the Live Bookmarks bar using cut and paste. Just navigate to the page where the RSS link is to the feed and a symbol appears in the address bar. Click on it and it will list all feeds on that page and let you subscribe to them instantly. (If you are reading this in Firefox the icon is there now at the right hand end of the address bar - in the default theme it is orange).

If you want to use RSS in Firefox a better way is to use the extension 'Sage'. See my mini review here https://www.donation...85.msg24084#msg24084.

Living Room / Re: Very disappointing wifi connection!
« Last post by Carol Haynes on May 05, 2006, 03:52 AM »
Don't know what the problem is but it sounds like it must be a hardware issue in the router itself if you can connect to your neighbours more effectively.

I have a Linksys ADSL/Gateway/Router and don't have any of these problems.

Does your router have Ethernet ports or is it a pure WiFi product? If it has Ethernet ports you could try connecting via that route to see if it works better - at least then you might be able to eliminate a configuration issue.

Easy to say - hard to do .... go and do something else for a while that demands your full attention ... preferably physical.

Hanging off rock climbs (either real cliffs or climbing walls) focuses the mind and lets you swear at something else for a while!

Living Room / Re: Will this be the final nail in Microsoft's Coffin?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on May 03, 2006, 02:25 AM »
From a purely practical point of view I wonder how many computer users are going to allow this level of intrusion when they already have alternatives that don't require this level of intrusion? I wonder if people will feel more inclinded to stick with Windows 2000 (or even XP which doesn't go nearly this far), unpatched if necessary, and Office 2000/XP rather than move on to new products where you are paying large amounts of money regularly just to use software! OK you could argue that it happens with upgrading versions at the moment but firstly these are optional (there are still loads of people using Win98/Office 97 even in commercial environments) and secondly would anyone expect MS to make this cheaper in the long run - it doesn't seem to be born out by experience!

Interesting article in today's Desktop Pipeline newsletter entitled "Microsoft Knows Where You Live . . . Or Soon Will" which I have quoted below.

I find the newsletter a good read so if you want to check it out head over to www.desktoppipeline.com and consider subscribing here (its free). It is also one of a set of related 'pipelines' - see here for details.

An related article is here.

You can also get their articles day to day via their RSS feeds here (main site) and here (blog) (just copy the web addresses into your RSS reader)

Here is the article:

Editor's Note: Microsoft Knows Where You Live . . . Or Soon Will

This week was almost All-Microsoft-All-The-Time as the Redmond software giant made so much news it was hard to keep up. The company announced its earnings forecast for the next year and took lots of lumps from analysts because it expected lower earnings. The reason, it seems, is that Gates & Co. are building a war chest of a couple of billion dollars to go after Google. (See this morning's New York Times story.)

But what does that have to do with the other Microsoft news of the week, that the company is casting a wider net for pirated Windows and even gearing up to go after pirated copies of Office? Actually plenty, I think. I would cite one more story from last week: "Microsoft Nearly Finished With Windows Live ID Deployment."

When Microsoft announced it had gotten religion about Web service and started rebranding everything "Live" last year I was skeptical. I'm not anymore. Microsoft is going full tilt at becoming an advertising-driven company. And the first step is to make sure it owns its customers.

For years Microsoft has had a . . . difficult . . . relationship with its customers. I'm not talking about all the Microsoft customers who hate the company. I'm talking about Microsoft's very early realization that software buyers need a lot of support -- a LOT of support -- and if you provided as much support as they wanted you'd never make a dime on them.

So it just didn't do support. You bought a PC with Windows on it and whose customer were you? Not Microsoft's. Microsoft didn't want to hear from you. If you had trouble with your OS you had to call the PC maker.

As long as business was good Microsoft didn't care too much if some copies of Windows and Office weren't official and registered. Piracy was less costly than customer service.

But (a) business isn't so good anymore, and (b) the business model is changing. (It's not the first time, either -- remember when Microsoft discovered desperate PC owners would actually pay for tech support? Suddenly there were phone numbers you could call.) It's the business model change that's the biggest driver of the anti-piracy campaigns, I think. If Microsoft is going to be an advertising company, it's going to need to know a lot more about its customers -- like who they are and where they live and how much money they make and what they like to do on weekends. If Windows Live ID actually does manage to get single-sign-on right for Microsoft (something the Passport program apparently never quite did) and does get tied to Microsoft's registration databases, pretty soon only the IRS and your mother will know more about you than Microsoft. And I'm not really sure about your mother.

Yes - there are loads on the Sage website to download and use or obviously you can modify/write your own.
6136
Having been looking through that list one thing I found which is worth mentioning is Sage NewsReader. See http://sage.mozdev.org/ for details

I have to say as soon as I installed this it is much more impressive than FoxNews that I tried before.

You can group your RSS feeds into folders nicely and you can apply your own style sheets (there are loads on the website you can download too) to customise the way the feed pages are displayed.

Here is a screen shot with a feed page for DC.com (I am using sage_synergy2.css style sheet rather than the default).

Here it is with the default style:

PS. Just noticed that vegas briefly mentioned this before but I recon it is worth a look. I know a lot of people use NewsGator for this sort of stuff but this is a really simple way to use RSS feeds and you can import OPML files from other readers (and export them too).
6137
Thanks guys - I am listening as I type so I can't comment on everyone's contributions yet but I must say I really enjoyed Zaine's rant! How come so many of you sound like you have been doing this sort of thing for years ?
6138
Don't know if this has already been mentioned but there is a good list of tested extensions that do useful things here:

http://www.scotsnews.../best_of/firefox.htm

it has also been updated to support only version 1.5 onwards.

There is also an interesting article about heavy memory usage and a fix here:

Living Room / Re: Xara Xtreme goes OpenSource !!
« Last post by Carol Haynes on April 29, 2006, 12:28 PM »
Sorry missed it last year. Actually what you have said (and quoted) makes some sense, esp.the bit about licensed parts of the software that will only be added when the paid for version is produced.

I suppose on this basis it would be good to see a free Xara LX version for the Windows platform too. It couldn't do any harm to their potential sales.

Having used Xara since the days when it was called ArtWorks by Computer Concepts and was only available on RiscOS based systems I really rate Xara's products (I've said this before if you hadn't noticed!) and it is great that Mac and Linux users are going to have a cross platform application of this quality. Also their email support for paying customers is quite good too. I don't really object to paying for the app as it is such good quality. Actually I have Adobe Illustrator installed too (it came as part of the Design Suite) but I still find myself going back to Xara to do any vector work as it just feels much more intuitive to use.

Bit frustrating here - having bought the product for windows they are now producing Open Source versions for Linux and Mac. Great news for Linux and Mac but what about Windows? I presume it is non-trivial to convert back and compile a free version for Windows.

Here are the details:

I don't curently have Linux installed on my box so it would be interesting to see what people think of the port.

General Software Discussion / Re: Will 64-bit make a difference?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on April 29, 2006, 04:25 AM »
LOL

Actually I think Zaine has a point - most 32 bit systems these days are as slow as 8 bit systems were in the 70s. When 16 bit systems appeared for domestic use they seemed really whizzo. I can still remember managing a 25 seat multi user mini computer that had 1 x 32 bit CPU and 4 Mb (that's not a typo) of memory and a fairly tiny hard disc by today's standards.

All software writers expand to fill the capacity of the system. (It is the same law that says it doesn't matter when you start to write and essay you will get it done on time and fill all the intervening time up - and in my case if I leave it to the last minute I usually get a better mark for it too!)

Does Microsoft Office (eg) actually acheive much more than Office 2 when it was released which came on a few floppies? There have been a lot of esoteric functions added but little of real core value and yet now you get umpteen CDs and it requires a mssive machine to do the same job. I am not picking on MS on this one but it is typical of application development. The fact that anything using the .Net framework (even a Hello World program) requires a 21Mb DLL installed says it all!

Living Room / Re: Earth. Overpopulated or not?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on April 28, 2006, 10:18 AM »
The current fuel fiasco comes to mind -- after Katrina devastated the South and the oil prices magically started soaring, it comes out of our pockets.  While I'm paying more for gas, the oil companies are making record profits.  They're not taking a hit, here--I am.  When there are significant tragedies or problems at hand, the general machine that is humanity does not reach out to coddle, though it may offer its condolences just before it pounces and takes full advantage.

LOL - if you want to see fuel prices head to the UK. Even at current prices in the US UK fuel is still more than twice the price per litre! And then the UK government wonders why UK business struggles to be competitive!

Er ... if the entire planet was populated to the density of New York where would you grow food?

What we have to remember is that cities aren't natural places to live - the countryside is. In the UK we are running out of countryside at a huge rate as it is covered in concrete for roads and new houses.

The other thing you need to consider is that there are huge tracts of land on the planet that are either incapable of supporting human life on a large scale (eg. most of Australia, most of Brazil, the Arctic) or else no one wants to live there (eg. Utah - just kidding)

Really impressed now I have had a little time to play. This is the first bit of 3-D software that I have tried that has you drawing  in a matter of seconds. The built in tutorials and the online tutorials are great too and pitched well for people new to the software. Just a shame the Pro version is so expensive.

They do an academic/student pricing but it is only available as an annual subscription basis and when you cease to be a student you can apply those payments 100% as a discount off the full price.

I really think they need a halfway house - Free / Non-commercial Pro / Commercial Pro.
