hi all,

i used to have an old copy of Print Shop Deluxe which i enjoyed very much. however, i'm having some problems with the new printer i bought recently so had a look at the newer version but didn't feel like spending so much...

therefore, i was wondering if there is a light-weight alternative to Print Shop Deluxe? I am open to suggestions... preferably, the app should be targeted at a medium to casual user with not too much hand-holding. ;)

Living Room / what happened to "Old Requests"?
« Last post by lanux128 on March 28, 2006, 08:21 PM »
wasn't there an "Old Requests" forum under "Coding Snacks"? was it removed permanently or shifted somewhere else...?
6103
yeah, you know, I don't think I have access to do this from work.  I think they've blocked off any kind of chatting.

superboyac: if you're behind a corporate/school firewall, you're out of luck... :o
read this for info on using a web-based im client that is less likely to be blocked.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Alias sharing
« Last post by lanux128 on March 28, 2006, 01:22 AM »
I know you have to go to the groups tab and create a new group but then exactly what goes where?
-alexp

actually you can go to F+RR's options then click on "Import and Export" menu and choose "Import Alias Group List".

you can get some pre-configured aliases here and here, but I think these already included in the newer versions of F+RR

good idea kae99.
something like this would only emphasise f+rr's capabilities. on my part, i would like to suggest that a special section is dedicated to user-submitted aliases on the f+rr page.

General Software Discussion / Re: Favorite Text Editor, a revisit
« Last post by lanux128 on March 22, 2006, 11:58 PM »
quoted from here...

just to add my own favourite text-editors combo: Metapad & Notetab. I use metapad as a replacement for notepad but when i need heavy-duty editing tools, I bring out notetab. In fact, metapad has an in-built launcher to view the current document in another editor/browser/word-processor, etc... There is also a version of metapad that can view (not edit) a RTF file, very handy for a quick peek.

As for Notetab, basically it has tabbed interface, adequate text manipulation tools, it's own text macros and many others as explained on the web-site. I first downloaded it back in 1997 and have been stuck with it ever since... ;-)

here the links...

...but at the end of the day the general attitude seems to be that they don't have to create a superior browser, people will use it anyway.

yes, i agree. previously there was no urgency in monitoring current trends/technologies/dangers on the web. i'll bet that they may have even disbanded their IE unit. Only with users, especially corporate ones, clamouring for more protection against spyware & its ilk, did MS revived the IE project.

after using for just over 24hrs, i'll guess i'll just stick to firefox for personal browsing but i still have to support users who are have IE on their PC by default. As a plus point, at least they changed the UI quite radically, now it'll will be easier (fingers crossed) to persuade users to switch browsers.

Find And Run Robot / some options needed
« Last post by lanux128 on March 22, 2006, 07:45 PM »
hi there mouser,

i was wondering if you could accomodate a few requests regarding the options window. They are:

1. Enable sort by Score feature in the listview of tabs such as "Pattern Scoring" & "Search Folders".
2. Add an option to remove non-existent folders from "Search Folders" tab.
3. Also to remove non-existent links from Launch History except from Removable Drives.

If it's too late for v1 then hopefully for v2... ;)

sorry, i'm not from USA so the idea didn't occur to me...

P.S. it's ok, i'll just change the avatar.  :-[

General Software Discussion / IE 7.0 Beta 2: Any takers?
« Last post by lanux128 on March 21, 2006, 10:07 PM »
Internet Explorer 7.0 Beta 2 Preview is available now for technical evaluation. according to soft32.com, some of the new features:

Internet Explorer Review
The latest version of the world’s most popular Web browser has been released for technical evaluation, feedback, and testing by software and Web site developers.

What offers:
· Dynamic security protection through a simplified architecture that defends against malware, and new dynamic ways to protect against personal data theft from fraudulent Web sites (a practice known as “phishing”).
· Improved design to make everyday tasks easier and faster, with better navigation through tabbed browsing; inline search right from the toolbar; shrink-to-fit Web page printing; and a streamlined, redesigned user interface (currently in its early stages in Beta 1).
· New tools to take you directly to the information you want through support for Web feeds (RSS) that includes automatic discovery of web feeds (RSS) on Web pages, basic Web Feed (RSS) reading capabilities, and basic support for saving Web feeds (RSS) as a new kind of favorite.
· Platform enhancements for developers to improve compatibility and manageability, including improved support for Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) as well as transparent PNG support.

so, any takers...? or is it too little, too late...

hmm.. a vote proposed on my head & i didn't know about it...  :o

2) how long are the images stored on ImageShack's  bevor they drop them?
i think the images have count-down of 1 year. that means, if no one views/clicks on them within a year, they'll be deleted but once viewed/clicked, the count-down is reset to one year from the day it is viewed/clicked.

I use Miranda. I use it for ICQ, Yahoo!, and two instances of MSN.

Innuendo: do you know how to use two instances of MSN/Hotmail at the same time?
Fyi, I use Miranda too.

It just perfectly does what I (rarely) need, it's free and easy to use - I don't care about the other features I don't use.

yes, i agree... i'm thinking of heading to AHK forum to check if anyone has a script on doing this. will post here if i find any... ;)

CLCL can also be expanded by installing some plugins which are available on the page itself.

General Software Discussion / Temporarily deactivate screensaver
« Last post by lanux128 on March 20, 2006, 10:19 PM »
a potentially useful tool:
Use NoSleep! in order to enjoy DVDs without interruptions or to run the Disk Defragmenter undisturbed by the screen saver...

NoSleep! temporarily deactivates the screen saver and some of your computer's standby features (as far as they are controllable by software). It does so either by disabling those services through system calls or by emulating keyboard activity.
