I have two comments after reading your postpartum writeup:

1. It's great fun to read these things and to experience the process vicariously.
2. Writing such things is such a good habit to get into for those serious about becoming good coders.
3. Participating in these kinds of projects that force you to conceive and then complete something "finished" with a real deadline is again such a great skill to get into the habit of.

In summary: great work, keep it up.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Quick paste popup menu: minimize content
« Last post by mouser on April 28, 2015, 01:57 PM »
Can you be a little more specific about what you would like to hide, im happy to entertain adding more options to add things.
You can customize what CLIPS show in the quick paste menu by editing the "Quick Paste" group in the main group tree, but that won't hide other special items, and it sounds like you already found how to hide most of those in the "Quick Paste Menu 2" tab.
I've probably added new things to the quick paste that aren't listed in the Quick Paste 2 tab, so if you can remind me which items you'd like hidden, i should be able to add the option to do that on that tab.

3 more days remaining of the fundraiser (April 30th last day), before we return to "normal" for a few more years:

So anyone who's been holding out for the last minute to donate.. the closing bell is ringing!

It's a fun idea to add some coloring options.. let me think about it though just because it's not trivial to implement.

Thanks Iain.

I've re-uploaded a new version, which should show as version 2.222.03 -- i'll make sure to update the version #s from now on so we can be sure we are talking about the same version.

I'm interested in two things: First, whether the large icons show in this version on Windows 8, and second, how it looks on high DPI setting where options panel is normally too small in prior versions.

v4.10.0 - April 28, 2015
  • [Improvement] Selecting multiple files with Ctrl+Click from thumbnail panel and dropping on current image now works better because it will ignore the case where the current image is selected.
  • [Improvement] Selecting multiple images with Ctrl or Shift no longer triggers loading of selected images.
  • [BugFix] No longer will query pale moon browser for current url even if option enabled in capture tab, since the browser does not respond with info.

Note: I am not pushing this to the update checker yet, since I pushed out another update so recently and the changes are not that important, but i just realized i haven't been updating the middle version# field that i normally do (4.x.0) and instead have been updating the build # (4.9.x), so thought i should correct that.
6085
nice find, sure does seem related, tomos.
6086
I'm guessing that it's palemoon's doing -- for some reason opening that page when a request is made to get the current url of the browser.

What used to be a very useful function, getting the current url of browser, has lately become one of the many victims of the (often justified) desire by browser makers to be paranoid about security.. So because of a concern that letting a 3rd party get the current url could be a security risk, it's becoming hard to get the current url of browser by a 3rd party tool.  It's a reason that if you are primarily concerned with grabbing web page screenshots and need the urls for them included as meta info, you may need to use a browser addon.

However, i will certainly put palemoon on an exclusion list so that SC does not even attempt to get the browser url any longer.

i wonder if same thing happens with recent firefox screenshots..

how weird!!!
let me look into it.
Can you tell me what the Pale Moon browser exe name is? Is it PaleMoon.exe ?

Mouser's Zone / Some DC software updates
« Last post by mouser on April 28, 2015, 04:20 AM »
I've released a bunch of updates to some of my larger software apps in the last two days:

6089
2.38.01 - Apr 28, 2015
  • [Feature] New option to start sniffing immediately when program is started, even in advanced mode.
  • [BugFix/Feature] New option to better handle the "Also Find" text.  In previous versions a url would be excluded if it did not match url filter type (multimedia vs all), even if it contained an Also Find keyword.  You now have an option (enabled by default) to always include results that match the Also Find keyword, even if it does not match the url filter type.  This is most useful when restricting search for multimedia urls but also anything containing the keyword.  Tip: Use ; character to separate multiple keywords.
6090
v2.29.0 - Apr 28, 2015
  • [Feature] Added option (tweaks tab) to not obey programs (like password utilities) that put stuff on the clipboard and mark it as to-be-ignored by clipboard tools.
  • [Feature] Added option (tweaks tab) to go to TOP of grid list when selecting new group; improvement to keeping selected row visible and focused when adding new clips.
  • [Feature] Added option to control frequency of automatic clipboard re-establishment.
  • [Feature] Added hotkeys to print the last clip, and to re-establish clipboard chain.
  • [Feature] Added new sorting/ordering option to the text modification/transformation dialog to reverse the order of lines.
  • [Feature] Added new sorting/ordering option to the text modification/transformation dialog to randomize the order of lines.
  • [Documentation] Added better help to clipboard re-establishment options.
  • [Documentation] Added better help for those who encounter Database Error 11013.

FlipSuite and Flipbook Printer / Re: 12-up?
« Last post by mouser on April 28, 2015, 12:31 AM »
Hi Jason,

First suggestion, play with FlipSuite as it has some more recent options for laying out cards.
You should be able to fairly easily create a 12-up layout.. Now as for rotating the video.. that may be more problematic -- i honestly don't remember the issue coming up before.. It might be as simple as defining the page layout as landscape (ie changing the page dimensions).

Living Room / Re: 10th Anniversary - long time member check-in thread
« Last post by mouser on April 27, 2015, 11:51 PM »
A long time ago (6+ years I think), I stumbled upon DC while searching the internet for free software. I was never a very active poster but there was a point in time that I read every thread voraciously. It was soon after that Mouser made the programming school and I was hooked into doing the C++ exercises and getting a very cool first exposure to programming with some encouraging pushes from Mouser and other DC'ers. Because of the programming school I majored in CS in College am now am a full time developer in downtown Chicago. I also grew up, got married, had a kid with a second on the way..

What a wonderful and amazing update to read.  Huge smile here.  :)
I remember your programming assignments quite well -- you were one of the few people to complete an entire stage of 10 assignments.
There's just nothing more to say but how happy I am to read this and hear from you

Can I get you guys to try the latest beta and let me know how it looks now.

regarding:
in large icon mode, no icons whatsoever are shown in the result list. In small icon mode icons are shown correctly.

can i ask you guys to try a couple of things:
first, turn OFF any custom visual font/size stuff height stuff on the Font Overides tab -- it may be that it's cutting it too short to show the icons because of the height?
and second, if that still has no effect, can you try messing with icon size at the top of the Tweaks and Deugging page, making sure to completely exit and restart farr after you change that value.

let me know if the latest version looks any different.

WordPress just released a critical security update that fixes the 0day vulnerability described below.

The WordPress content management system used by millions of websites is vulnerable to two newly discovered threats that allow attackers to take full control of the Web server. Attack code has been released that targets one of the latest versions of WordPress, making it a zero-day exploit that could touch off a series of site hijackings throughout the Internet.

Time for another board game mini-review, this time for: Small World.

pic705120_md.jpg

Small World is a very popular board game that's been around for a few years, but yesterday was the first time I've played it.

A quick video review from our friends at Starlit Citadel:

And you can watch a full 80 minute game played by one of my favorite board game video folks:

I played a 2-player game with a friend and we had a great time with it even our first time learning the rules and playing.

Perhaps what surprised me the most about the game is that I tend to shy away from games where there is direct, repated player conflict/confrontation, especially when it comes to "area control" mechanics (like battling over spaces on the board).  Games like this (risk, etc.) feel much too confrontational to me, and they completely stress me out and make it so i don't have fun.  If i am losing i feel nervous and if i'm winning i feel guilty.  But Small World, which is based on such a mechanic -- was somehow free of any real confrontational "feel" -- which was wondeful.  If you have a friend (or friends) who might tend to shy away from competitive type games, I recommend you give it a try.

One of the hallmarks of the game is that players take control of special creatures whose unique special abilities are mixed and matched, so every game is a bit different.. It's an incredible achievement in terms of game balance and entertainment.  I think part of why it doesn't feel so confrontational is that over the course of the game, your chosen creatures (tribe) will suffer and you basically "retire" them when you want, and pick up a new set of creatures to control -- so in a way you're kind of happy to see them go into decline so you can play with a new set of creatures with new abilities.  It's incredibly fun.

One caveat to this game is that, while the rules are fairly simple, you'll constantly have to be reading a large sheet that explains powers and abilities, which can sometimes be a little tricky, so you might very well have a problem with smaller kids, especially if you don't know the powers by heart when you try to teach them.

Highly recommended: 5 out of 5.
6097
i remember this issue -- thanks for reminding me to handle it.

but to answer your question, yes, you can tell Screenshot Captor to ignore videos, which should solve your problem.  It's on the Saving and Loading Files options tab:

I'd like to do more, but my ankles and knees don't like it much...
running really does seem like just about the worst exercise for your bones and joints.. but it's also uniquely "compelling" in terms of scratching a primal itch in the way other exercises don't seem to do.
