Wow. I wish I could have seen this one...

I was playing the game when I remembered I had left some noodles cooking on the stove, so I took my first turn on level 2, firing a ball as I got up to take care of dinner. As I was getting the noodles out of the pot I noticed the music coming from the office was different. . .

I came back to the PC to find that it was playing the "Level complete" music. Somehow that one shot completed the level.

Twiggy 1-shot.png

That must have been the best shot ever. And nobody witnessed it. :(

Hmm... If a ball completes the level in Twigatelle and nobody's around to see it, did it really happen?

No takers/volunteers to help me start up a new blog and rant a bit?

Deozaan?

Do I have a reputation or something? I haven't even commented in this thread (until now) but I'm the first one you mention in a request to join forces for an over the top Apple bashing blog?

I honestly don't know if I should feel good about that or not. :-[  ;D

EDIT: But since we're on the topic, I came across this today and had a good laugh: What it's like to own an Apple product.

It's the Android version which is still in beta.

I have personally used Swype on the Droid X and have seen it in use on other Android phones which it comes as OEM, so I guess it being in beta is like Google products which are in beta for years even though they're being used by (nearly) everyone.

From Swype's FAQ:

How can I buy Swype? / When will Swype be on the Android market?

We have considered a direct-download sales model, but there are two challenges to that approach:

  • Customer Support. Providing Swype users with the level of professional support they deserve is a priority for us. We're still a small (but quickly growing!) company, and we don't have the resources necessary to support a full end-user sales model. It is much more efficent for us to focus on improving Swype and to partner with large organizations like Samsung and T-Mobile who already have customer support structures in place.
  • Device integration. Swype isn't just an app; it's a keyboard - the most widely used piece of software on a device. It interacts with nearly every single application on the phone. As such, it's more like a system component than an application. For each device release we do a tremendous amount of testing and we *always* find issues due to the varying components - the OS version, the device hardware, the OEM UI implementation, etc. In addition, some features can't be implemented without an OEM's engineering assistance. We end up doing a large amount of work on each device to be sure that you have a great experience entering text using Swype.

So, we appreciate your enthusiasm, but we are not ready to do direct-downloads at this time.

You can actually get the installer by pointing your Android phone's browser here but you need to login with a beta account to install it. So I guess what I'm saying is that unless you can get into the closed beta I think it's more likely that by the time it's available on the Market you'll have upgraded your phone to a newer model that comes with Swype.

That's silly.

A business provides a good or service, generally in exchange for money. A scam provides nothing in exchange for money.

There was a beta available on the Marketplace a long time ago, but since they've "released" the full version they've decided their business model is akin to OEM

Swype is still is closed beta, it's not finished last I checked. I hope when it is finished it'll be available to buy and install it. Of course if not there'll always be a hacked version for download, and in spite of other my dislike of pirating software, I for one wouldn't feel guilty if no other source were available.

Swype is definitely finished. I've used it on other phones that come with it. Some of the folks at XDA Developers were porting it to other phones when they got a message from the Swype team (emphasis added):

We see you have re-packaged our software and are distributing it. We are glad to hear that you guys like Swype, but we are obligated to state that we don't condone such activity nor support the result. Naturally those of you asking for new languages and features should wait until we launch a device in your market. Obviously, we won't support unlicensed versions of our software. One might ask why we don't just release the .cab file ourselves and save everyone the hassle. The reason is that we have spent seven years building Swype and we want to try to make a living selling our software. That means someone needs to pay for it. Thus far, our business model is OEM licensing. We do plan to get to direct-to-consumer distribution but it is a different sort of business and thus it is hard to say when. In the meantime, enjoy using Swype and please look out for a better, more integrated, and legal version coming soon to a phone near you.

Regards,
The Swype Team

PS. Our lawyer has asked us to remind everyone about copyright infringement and to inform you that Swype reserves all of its rights.

Also, note the date. That was a year ago. If it doesn't come as OEM software on your phone, it's probably not coming.

I tried blocking it with Addsubtract and it didn't work.  I looked at the source of the web page and saw that the toolbar is ran through javascript.....

Yep, it's javascript. Which is why you need to block the domain. *.wibiya.com or as app said, cdn.wibiya.com should do the trick.

After checking, it looks like Swype is in beta now. Oh well.

Are you sure about that? There was a beta available on the Marketplace a long time ago, but since they've "released" the full version they've decided their business model is akin to OEM, as I explained before.

I'll never be able to get Swype for my G1 because of this.

* Doesn't come with Swype installed -- big minus -- Can't find it in the Android market either, double-minus

If Swype isn't included, then it might not be available for that phone. Swype isn't available on the market for ANYBODY because their entire business is based off of bundling it, kind of like OEM software.

Most phones that have it don't have it enabled by default. You have to go into your input settings and enable it first.

I did this a few times as a kid, for a cheap Christmas countdown. It's great for kids who don't quite have a good concept of time yet. If they don't really comprehend the difference between 2 weeks and next Thursday, you can just tell them when all the links are gone from the chain then it's Christmas.

I'd never considered it for anything else (e.g. debt), really.

That looks like the Wibiya toolbar.

I wonder if you could block it simply by editing your hosts file to make wibiya.com point to 127.0.0.1, or use Adblock to make a filter for wibiya.com.

Hi folks,

I use a great piece of budgeting software called You Need A Budget, aka YNAB. Today is YNAB's 4th birthday so Jesse is offering a 40% off deal. The page says that the code can only be used 100 times, but I don't know if that's just marketing or if that's really true.

How do you get monsters (mobs) in multiplayer? Do you have to run a custom server or something?

Monsters don't really work in multiplayer since there is no health or damage implemented yet.

* zombie pigs and ghasts no longer get hurt by fire or lava
Hm, perhaps OK for ghasts, but zombiepigs really ought to... baconize... from fire/lava.

Do nether-portals still appear more or less at random when you exit back to the real world?

Yeah, ghasts randomly getting burned by magmafalls made the Nether even more creepy due to their screams they emit when harmed. And since when are pigs immune to fire?

This was in the changelog for 1.21.1 (Nov 5):

* Attempted to fix the portal dupe bug where you could exit through a different (new) one than the one you entered through.

So it should be mostly fixed, but I think he's still working on it.

Something that would be useful is something that adds to the context Menu

Send To -> Start Menu (create Shortcut) would be awesome in XP.

New Minecraft Update:

General fixes:
* players and mobs in lava or fire no longer spam sound effects
* getting hit with a higher damage while recovering from a smaller one now works as intended
* lava flows further in the Nether
* zombie pigs eventually forgives
* added support for custom skin packs
* fixed duplicate buttons when resizing screens
* zombie pigs and ghasts no longer get hurt by fire or lava
* fixed volume sliders now saving properly

Multiplayer fixes:
* hellworld=true no longer overwrites old save chunks. Player positions will still break if you switch it on a running server, though
* boats are now visible to other players
* minecarts move nicer
* fishing kinda sorta works, but needs more work
* sheep and cows look like sheep and cows now
* buckets work now
* fixed stairs being really difficult to destroy
* increased the timeout before “Took too long to log in”
* made it possible to ride carts and boats
* added (after lots of work) the ability to steer server-side boats
* added “no-animals” setting. if true, animals will immediately vanish
* added support for more animation settings. Currently it’s just the “riding” animation, but the same system will be used for sneaking

More info about custom texture packs on the post (linked above).

I also came across this funny faux Minecraft LARP.

But I guess it's not really funny unless you've played the game.

You need to enable the option to rearrange start menu by drag and drop (or whatever it's called) if it's not already enabled. That's hidden somewhere in the options you get to from right-clicking the task bar.

I really love my Android phone. Unfortunately I was (unwittingly) an early adopter (I have the G1, the first Android phone in the USA) and the hardware inside just wasn't made for all the new Android stuff.

I highly recommended Android to my family and 3 of my family members now own a Droid X. Unfortunately with the X, Verizon did some stupid crap with the UI, integrating Facebook with it. So all your facebook friends show up in your contact list when you try to find someone to call. You can filter them out, but it's not done by default. And strangely, one of the features I most loved about my phone--the fact that any contact you added on your phone would sync with your Gmail contacts, and vice versa--doesn't happen with the Droid X.

Anyway, I still highly recommend that Android, but I'm nervous about it since the phone companies slap their own crappy stuff on top of the OS/UI.

For what it's worth, I'm running a custom firmware that allows me to get Android 2.2 on my phone (running Vanilla it can only handle 1.6) as well as adding many more improvements and I love it. It's called CyanogenMod. But as I said before, the G1 wasn't really built to handle it all, so on my old phone it runs a little slow. I'm sure on a modern phone if you didn't like the slapped on UI crap you could run CyanogenMod very nicely.

It's been a while since I used XP, but you can't just right-click the file and select Pin to Start Menu? Come to think of it, I think you could only do that if it showed up in your recently used list or was already in the start menu.

Can you create a shortcut to your start menu location and drag shortcuts to documents onto the shortcut to the start menu?

General Software Discussion / Re: 25 Ubuntu tips for beginners
« Last post by Deozaan on November 10, 2010, 02:15 PM »
This list sucks. This list doesn't read like a tip for beginners. It reads like "the first 25 things you should do when you install Ubuntu" and it's all wrong.

The first 4 "tips" are not good for beginners. Has this person even used Ubuntu in the last 2 years? Beginners shouldn't be using terminal. Instead, they should open the Update Manager, tell it to check for new updates, and click install (if there are any). That's 1-4 condensed and quite simple right there.

Tips 5 & 6 probably also shouldn't be used by beginners either. Why would a beginner want to add a custom repository?

Tip 7 is to instead use Synaptics packet manager to do 1-4, but as I said, the Update Manager is easier to use. Synaptics is very useful, but can be a bit confusing. It would probably be better for a noob to use the Ubuntu Software Center to find other software to install.

Tip 8 is the first one he gets right, IMO. Install restricted extras.

Tip 9: Get some games. This can be done using the Ubuntu Software Center in (my version of) tip 7.

Tip 10: Enabling tweaks. This sounds more to me like something for an intermediate Ubuntu user, not a beginner.

Tips 11-15: Do stuff with Gnome-Do. Huh? I've never used Gnome-Do before, and I consider myself a beginner to Ubuntu. Maybe it does awesome stuff, and is a great tip. But why take up 5 tips on the same subject (which he's done before in this list and will do again)? Gnome-Do should be a single tip. Say everything you want to say about it in one tip.

Tips 16 and 17: Change wallpaper & window styles. Sure. No argument here, I guess.

Tip 18: Install Hardware Drivers. In my opinion, this should be very near the top of the list. It's usually the first thing I do (to get my WiFi working), but it might be OK to wait until after you run the Update Manager before doing this.

Tip 19: Desktop Effects & Compiz. I've been trying Ubuntu out for the past couple years and just recently learned about Compiz. This is a good tip I wish I would have gotten earlier.

Tips 20-25 are OK. But not everybody wants a dock, or uses photoshop (GIMP), needs samba, or wants to mess with panels. But these tips are good enough since it's likely that anybody reading the guide will want to do at least one or two of the things presented in these final few tips.

But really, the whole list could be compressed into about 5 tips:

1. Use Update Manager to make sure your software and OS is up to date.
2. Install hardware drivers.
3. Use Ubuntu Software Center to install cool stuff like VLC, GIMP, games, and more.
4. Want to tweak your experience? Try Gnome-Do, Compiz, Docky, etc.
5. Miscellaneous Stuff: Samba, Restricted Extras, brief overview of Synaptics Package Manager including custom repositories, etc.

Of course, each tip would need to have more details than my quick summary, but in my opinion, the above 5 tips could easily cover everything the author of the article wrote about in 5 times as many tips. It's also more Ubuntu noob friendly, though steps 4 and 5 are for slightly more advanced users.

But that's just my opinion.

So, after watching that video on sugar/fructose for 1.5 hours saying calories don't matter, sugar matters, how do you explain this?

For 10 weeks, Mark Haub, a professor of human nutrition at Kansas State University, ate one of these sugary cakelets every three hours, instead of meals. To add variety in his steady stream of Hostess and Little Debbie snacks, Haub munched on Doritos chips, sugary cereals and Oreos, too.

His premise: That in weight loss, pure calorie counting is what matters most -- not the nutritional value of the food.

The premise held up: On his "convenience store diet," he shed 27 pounds in two months.

This is directly contradictory to what Dr. Lustig said in his sugar videos.
