Living Room / Re: My 1-year Facebook Death-a-versary!!!
« Last post by superboyac on December 01, 2014, 10:53 AM »
I admire those who are not on facebook.  It's something I want to do, but certain friends of mine were kind of offended when I said I'd remove myself because they use it to keep in touch with me and it's more convenient this way (they have somewhat hectic situations).  So for that reason, I am staying on.
602
I think I'm starting to understand the issue.  Check out this thread, which is my problem exactly:
http://forum.ownclou...php?f=26&t=18623

the final response:
Hi,

i don't think that any user in here can fix/solve this underlaying issue.
Call me a conspiracist, but I believe the problem may be that this is intentionally done to have users pay for the enterprise version of owncloud.  In the enterprise version they say:
This appliance is a fully prepared OVA file containing the ownCloud 7.0 Enterprise Edition virtual image, and the additional software you need to get you up and running on ownCloud in minutes – including ownCloud 7 Enterprise Edition, Apache2, PHP and MySQL. Get started in no time providing a complete ownCloud environment, fully setup and ready to go!
The bolded is exactly my problem.  i thought the bitnami download would have taken care of that, but it seems not.  I have no idea how to fix this, I just want owncloud working on my local intranet, nothing else is needed.  i thought the mysql and apache bit would have been included with bitnami, but perhaps not.  The response above is vague enough where it seems there is something like this going on.
603
OK, so I'm back to trying this out.  This time I used the owncloud-bitnami pre-packaged vmware file.  So I'm no longer installing it myself on a windows OS, I'm just launching that bitnami server directly.

i still can't get the freaking contacts part of owncloud to work, and it's the only part i'm interested in!  Argh.  If I go to contacts, it says "Server error! Please inform your administrator".  I have no idea what to do.  I had this problem on the windows setup earlier, and I had to do some things with webdav and mysql.  It worked for like a few minutes, then AMPSS stopped being able to start mysql, which is why I'm giving this bitnami a try.  But same issue.

I can't believe how many hours I've spent trying to get control over contact syncing in recent months.  Every single solution for trying to keep your contacts in your control (not on someone's cloud) has proved to be an immense pain in the butt.

I don't know where the notion of 'piracy' leaves off and 'entitlement' begins.

I decided it was better for my inner self if I just didn't go there.

  • If I want something, or use something, I'll buy it.  Always.
  • I'll always prefer to sample or trial some things first. But if that's not possible, the burden of my satisfaction rests entirely on the shoulders of the seller.
  • If I don't like it - or feel it was misrepresented by the seller - I'll return it and ask for my money back.
  • If I can't have a refund, the person I paid is welcome to what they got. It's the last they'll ever get from me - and I'll  bad mouth them to everyone I know plus anybody else who will listen.
  • Conversely, if I do like what I get (and the way I was treated) I'll freely recommend them and their product(s) whenever asked, or when it's otherwise appropriate.

I make it a point to always act in good faith. And I make a far better friend and admirer than I do an adversary.

I think the same can be said of most of us here at DoCo.

Wise businesses know that.
Very nicely said.  clipped.

General Software Discussion / Re: Outline 4D >>50% off sale<< (only $50)
« Last post by superboyac on November 21, 2014, 01:13 PM »
Man, I've been able to use Outline 4D in "production" now for a bit...I am loving it, holy cow!  I'm using it as my basic project manager, and it's working out perfectly.

Are you referring to the outline view or the timeline view (or both)?
Good question, for this discussion I'm referring to the outline view.  I haven't used the timeline view yet for real life situations.  I toyed with it with example items, and it will eventually be useful for me also. I just didn't expect the outliner to be so effective with me.

General Software Discussion / Re: windows services manager. such a thing?
« Last post by superboyac on November 21, 2014, 11:01 AM »
Is there anything that will quickly allow me to toggle a bunch of services on and off?  For example, if I want to do a lot of photoshopping, I want to disable a bunch of unecessary services to speed things up.  Then I want to reenable them again once I'm done.  is there anything where I can make a few profiles or something and toggle them?

So, you can do this with a couple of batch files and the "net stop <service name>" and "net start <service name>" commands.  However, you have perfect timing.  If you can wait until next month, this is what I'm working on for NANY this year:
 (see attachment in previous post)
It's called Splat (Simple Profile Launcher Application Tool) and will allow you to build profiles that allow you create list of applications and services to start/close/kill.  You can insert delays based on number of seconds or cpu usage threshold.  Also, you can assign each profile a hotkey as well as use one hotkey to execute multiple profiles.  It's sort of like a GUI version of App's Lacuna Launcher.
I can wait!  Glad you're on it!

Man, I've been able to use Outline 4D in "production" now for a bit...I am loving it, holy cow!  I'm using it as my basic project manager, and it's working out perfectly.  I'm very amazed actually...all those outliners, PM tools, etc., I've tried (and lord knows I've tried them all) and this is the one that is hyper-intuitive for me.

You know what the secret to me is?  I think it's the fact that I can print it and it basically looks just like what I'm doing on the screen.  That's been a HUGE complaint of mine over the years as I've tried project management tools.  They look great on the screen, but printing or exporting is a huge pain and the end product I ended up taking to meetings and such looked awful compared to the meticulous effort I spent organizing the items and making them look good.  And it's an excellent outliner to boot.  Fantastic tool.  This and Scapple have blown me away this year as far as actual productivity goes.  Maybe I just think like a writer or something...they're both meant for screenwriting, lol!   I've never written anything!!  Just goes to show...something, I don't know.  ;D

« Last post by superboyac on November 19, 2014, 09:41 AM »
good points.
The more I think about it, the more impressed I am by the mouse.  Tough to say, but it's one of very few inventions that was basically perfect right from the start, what, over 50 years ago?  Pretty amazing feat.

i really have no idea what the next input device breakthrough will be, especially in relation to touchscreens.

Living Room / Still weird: The mouse is more accurate than a finger
« Last post by superboyac on November 18, 2014, 05:59 PM »
I still find it weird that the mouse is still more accurate to use than a finger.  I've been using a touchscreen for a while now, and it's not even close.  Touching the screen with a finger should be intuitively more better...I mean, you're just touching the actual thing you want to touch.  Yet doing it with the mouse is far easier, faster, accurate.  Is it because of the finger-pad being too big?  Would it be different if my finger ended in a needle-tip?  I don't think so.

It seems to be one of the main things holding back touch screens.  What is going to be the breakthrough here?  I can't even guess.

OK, thanks Supe! BTW, mine only checks manually; can't find any setting to auto-check for updates. Same for you?

Jim

yeah, oddly it doesnt even seem to notify of updates.
me too.  I only can do manual checks, no option for automatic.  It gets updated a lot, it would be annoying and I'd probably turn it off anyway!  :D

Why not make contact with the source?

Heh it was just a silly joke. An Anti-Malware program that lists itself as Malware ...  :P

Douglas H. is the guy into self referential stuff : )

might not be the first time even :D
but note that my comment was for Superboyac - that he ask MBAM directly (I could have made that clearer ;-])
MBAM told me she did it on purpose because I was flirting with SAS.

Hmm.. I didn't receive any notification about V.7. And when I click on "Check for Updates" it tells me that V.6.73 is available. (I presently have V.6.67d)

Were you notified about the new version, Tom?

Thank you.

Jim
For me, it v6 only checks for v6 updates.  Only v7, after it's installed, will check for v7 updates.

Living Room / Re: Do any wifi-DIRECT adapters actually exist?
« Last post by superboyac on November 17, 2014, 10:19 AM »
After the initial flurry of breathless "game changer" announcements, it seems to have stalled out around 2012. The biggest motivation seemed to be killing off Bluetooth - which is odd because that's something that never really went mainstream beyond headsets for smartphones. (On second thought, reason enough for everybody else to want to kill it since it's a Microsoft proprietary technology.) >:D

There's some talk of how this may be the key technology for bringing "the internet of things" to the general public. But most of it seems to imply wifi-direct will be built into the devices rather than offered as an add-on. Which could make it a selling point for new devices.

Be still my heart! :-\
Well, THAT is certainly interesting, thanks.
If you had asked me 5 years ago, I fully would have expected this kind of tech to be common now.

Bluetooth is MS's tech?  Why do they suck at implementing it then?
Interesting...the new xbox one controller doesn't use bluetooth.  Supposedly it uses Wifi DIrect, but it's not terribly clear.  On the other hand, the PS4 controller uses bluetooth and it works really well.

Did you forget to uncheck the option to try the pro version when you installed it. That runs on windows start and is the last window you see when installing
I have no idea.  I guess I have to uninstall/reinstall.  Not cool MBAM!!
619
So MBAM...good program.  But lately, it keeps auto-starting with Windows, and I have all the auto-start options turned off:
In MBAM settings, i have the start with windows UNCHECKED.
I checked with Winpatrol, and there are no MBAM entries in startup or otherwise.

How is it able to keep auto-starting??

Living Room / Do any wifi-DIRECT adapters actually exist?
« Last post by superboyac on November 14, 2014, 04:15 PM »
I'm looking for an adapter that can turn my desktop pc into a wifi-direct enabled computer (without using another access point or router).  Now, as I'm looking into it, it's quite unclear how to do this.  I was thinking there would be some kind of wifi-direct USB device that I plug in like a bluetooth adapter, and bingo.  But I can't find a single one!
I go to the Wifi Alliance website:
http://www.wi-fi.org...r-wi-fi/wi-fi-direct
then I go to where it says "product finder", which sends me here:
http://www.wi-fi.org...i-fi-direct-products
Which is basically an empty page.
So where are these devices?
I don't want a Miracast or anything, because that's basically a restricted-use device.  I want an adapter that will connect the computer directly and then I can do anything that I normally do over wifi.  I don't want Miracast dictating what I can and can't do.  But that seems to be where the tech is at currently.  However, I'm not sure, and it's not clear, and so forth.

It appears to me that the "industry" is keeping wifi-direct out of the spotlight, because the technology is definitely in most of the newer high end devices (phones, game controllers, HDMI adapters like chromecast) and all the implementations so far are quite restricted.  You will not be able to take advantage of the technology in an open manner.

Anyway, so I want an adapter basically.

Aww come on 40... methinks you're being a bit harsh on NASA!  ;D

Nope. They keep trying to do it on the cheap through the questionable Regan Error Era theory of 'privatization' being the absolute cure for all governmental budget woes.

Privitization hasn't worked very well in the past. And it's still not working. ;) :P
I may or may not be currently working or not working with them.  And I concur with 40. :D

I've been using the bitdefender version based on your recommendation for a couple of months now.  It's good.  My only complaints so far have been:
--you must give a *working* email for the program to not nag you; even the paid-for version.

Do what I do. Set up an @live or @gmail account purely for all those pesky people that insist on a valid e-mail address. Open it at least once a month to keep it active. Periodically trash everything in it except for registration acknowledgements, license keys, and other genuinely useful messages. End of problem. No worries.

--it's chinese

Is it really any more dangerous coming from a non-American developer than an un-American ;) one? Or really any other nationality these days? They all seem to be in bed with their respective government's spy & surveillance agencies - with our own biggies leading the stampede.

--sometimes it can be a little too simplistic.  as in, in their effort to make it very easy to use, some of the more powerful options are in odd places.

Good point. The pro version has a more traditional dashboard like all the other majors do. The freebie control panel is rather simplistic. But you can still get to pretty much anything you need if you have to.

 :)
agreed.  good point on the non-american stuff.  I used to be a little more convicted about such things.  then i learned.

^ It's a little more tricky than it looks.

Basically, under this wording, if you are using .NET and you ever assert an IP claim against Microsoft for any reason, you automatically become a provable infringer on Microsoft’s IP because their "personal promise" is automatically withdrawn. So in short,: use .NET, try to sue us, and you're now an infringer.

So while your infringement claim remains to be proven, Microsoft’s infringement claim against you is already established.

Two guesses who would win in a tit-for-tat legal confrontation like that regardless of the merits? (Hint: bigger is usually the winner in IP infringement cases.)

That's a win-win for Microsoft. Their IP is fully protected either way. Your IP protection is anybody's guess.

Good gawd.  good catch.

My current favorite is BitDefender. Either the "free for personal" or paid-for Pro.

I use the pro version myself, supplemented by occasional on-demand scans with Malwarebytes Antimalware and/or Super Antimalware.

This trio (along with staying current with Windows Update) seems to catch everything that's catch-able so far (knock wood).

but so far so good.  I can't think of another av program I prefer at this point.  I used to be a kaspersky guy years ago, but fell out of favor quickly.

Have you considered my tool WinButtons? (and probably ask for some specific enhancements?)
It's excellent. I was able to put application-aware custom panels for Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere onto a 10" MIMO touch screen for a friend who has bad arthritis and finds constant fiddling with mouse/menu/hotkey stuff increasingly difficult. The panel improved his life more than a little. Since the usual gear engaged in my brain is reverse, it's remarkable that this was possible, and a testament to Ath's skill.

Ath's willingness to help is impressive!

Thanks, Ath!
