Best E-mail Client / Re: Best IMAP Client

OPera M2 has tags. Shortcut: l, [number].
They are called labels.

Not sure it's as flexible as you expected :) but it's something.

General Software Discussion / easy backups on linux: timevault
« Last post by urlwolf on November 13, 2008, 04:30 AM »
There's a nice review of timevault here.
I'm just configuring it myself. Will report back.

BTW, SFFS is coming to linux too!

General Software Discussion / Re: Lessons from 2 years without Windows
« Last post by urlwolf on November 12, 2008, 05:40 PM »
I agree with his experience.
There's no replacement for some windows software.
Which makes sense.

On the other hand, starting IRB (ruby prompt) takes x10 longer on a windows box (blame the filesystem, I guess). That's enough for me to use linux to develop ruby apps.

@kartal.
Not here. What are you doing exactly?

also, unison (file synch) is written in ocaml.

Developer's Corner / F# (Ocaml) looks like a killer language on paper. Opinions?
« Last post by urlwolf on November 11, 2008, 03:26 AM »
I've looking at Ocaml since a friend told me that the programming languages I use (ruby and R) are girly :). I of coruse asked "So what's not girly then for you? :) ... he was an Ocaml user. and I can see why he said that:

  • Strong typing
  • Types are inferred
  • Functional, but OO possible
  • Great compiler: Faster than C++
  • debugger can go back in time

And if Microsoft has copied it for their future language, there must be something to it (F# is Ocaml syntax):

http://spotless-spot...11/why-i-like-f.html

The main advantage of using F# is visual studio, and the graphics libs/windows integration if that suits you.

Functional languages are associated with 'academic' and 'not practical'. This is mostly because other programming languages come with the kitchen sink (libraries for everything), and most functional languages don't. But this is changing. There is  "Ocaml batteries included":
http://dutherenverse...-alpha-2-has-landed/
http://www.reddit.co..._batteries_included/

So I'm just poking around. Threre's a free book (in beta), and Steve Yegge loved the language for a while (he then repented).

Textbook:
http://files.metaprl...g/doc/ocaml-book.pdf

Yegge:
http://steve.yegge.g...pages.com/more-ocaml

Here's some more cool things you can do with it:
http://camltastic.bl...-you-cant-do-in.html

What do you think? Anyone has any experience? Anyone feeling like jumping in?

More bad news. I'm finding files with size zero. I wish I knew who did that. My guess is that SFFS server mode does all kind of bad things to files. At this point I'm really afraid of SFFS. It'll require detective work to figure out what is going on here, and I don't have the time.
609
correction: syncronizeIt is doing wacky stuff.
apparently random stuff (2.1 gb) is marked as different when I know it's not.

This sucks. I've never wasted this much time on an operation that should be trivial.

General Software Discussion / phraseexpress: how does it work?
« Last post by urlwolf on November 10, 2008, 05:01 AM »
I know there are some serious users of phraseexpress here. I have tried, it watched videos, read docs, etc, and still I don't get it. How does it work? I want it to replace intellicomplete, that is, it'll do autocompletion of words, giving suggestions. But I've tried all parameter combinations and it doesn't work. It only offers silly suggestions like "I'm" (really!).

My guess is that it interacts with some other tool, because I cannot find any other explanation. I posted in their forums, but the couldn't offer any help (and my post was accidentally deleted by them; go figure).

Are there any known interactions? Do you get suggestions from the get go or do you have to wait till it learns? I tried repeating the same word several times and it didn't do anything with it.

The problem is clearly specified: do the exact same thing that intellicomplete does!

Thanks

I'd Say PDFXchange. Not as expensive as acrobat, works well.

General Software Discussion / Re: Total Commander 7.03 for Windows released!
« Last post by urlwolf on November 09, 2008, 06:31 AM »
I jumped from Dopus to TC when they released a new full version and the cost for upgrading 2 computers was a bit much.

Since then, I have realized that TC is far superior. It just take some time getting used to it.

by the way, BC has a nice 'touch' feature that I used to override the date differences. It's all a big hack, but now at least one tool (synchronizeIt) seems to be doing allright.
614
Nope, sorry, didn't find the problem.
Moreover, BC gives me red when file sizes and attributes are identical:
http://www.scooterso...howthread.php?t=4179

I have no idea why. I cannot afford to spend more time on this; I'll report here if I ever find the cause.

General Software Discussion / Re: Best Python IDE

Yep, I use netbeans, and love it. Will use it for python when it comes out. And that has mercurial support.

But in the meantime: Wow, eric rocks!

Do you know of any IDE that supports mercurial?
Thanks

But how do we get the volume discount?
619
@NigelH: maybe you could organize a discount? Just mail the company, and show them how DC discounts work. Tell them were are about 30000 users :)
620
@NigelH: good catch.
The interface is very intuitive, and it's fast as hell!
It doesn't have some niceties from BC, like mp3 synch'ing (it shows tags!), but really efficient.
The GUI is a masterpiece; it shows in real time what it has found (like BC actually, but without the messy coloring)

The 'packages' feature is something to investigate. It wraps the results of an update; if it's small, you can place it on a usb key instead of carrying an external HD with you. I haven't tried it yet.
I've not seen a 'mirror' mode. Maybe one doesn't need it?
I feel this tool gives you the maximum feeling of control.

And also, it's not obvious to me if one can schedule profiles.

One nice thing: Projects. You can add a bunch of profiles to be run together as a project. This you can sorta do with SFFS by taking advantage of the hierarchical naming schemes, but you cannot mix and match 'profiles' that act on different partitions etc and group them (not that I know of at least).
621
Thanks NigelH.
Have you used the 'packages' feature?
Why do you prefer it over SFFS?

ok, now I know for a fact that some file and folder dates are way off.
A file that I positively know I haven't looked at in years shows a date of 10/10/2008.
I'm really worried. What could have caused this?

Anyway, it looks like I cannot trust dates. What else can I do?
I can use SFFS with MD5sums; that could take ages, buy would keep the two HDs parallel.
But the interface that SFFS uses to show differences is so obscure (no two-pane; are we kidding?) that I don't trust what I'm doing anymore). No wonder the average user doesn't touch synch programs with a 5-meter stick :)
624
Thanks F0dder.
Does BC offer an option for MD5sum?
I have no idea what's wrong. It's synch'ing 11000 files right now at work. No way I have modified that many files since the last sync.
625
Thanks mouser, in synch mode, I couldn't find the option you mention.
However, I think I found the problem.
All my folders in the source have a very recent date, which is wrong.
Some evil program may have changed the date in folders (not in files).
BC is fooled and thinks all contents must be different. (scratch that, not all folders).
But something really funny is going on with folder dates. they don't match.

On top of that, plety of files that have the exact same date are still detected as different (AND they are not of course) by BC.

If I find the culprit, I'll make sure everyone I know hears about this.
