Yes, it really is fine, this System Explorer.
But why must half the tray icon be taken by these two letters (S over E) ? :-\   systray.jpg

I just don't like that part!

When sitting in tray only, there is no CPU usage to mention. With the window open, CPU usage is 10%.

Oh yes, that's a good idea - I was a little disappointed that I didn't receive a mail when DC was closed, and a mail again when it was up and running. But of course it is too late to learn from this, now, because it will never happen again!?  ;)

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: add &fmt=6 or &fmt=18 to all youTube links
« Last post by Curt on March 01, 2008, 10:27 AM »
"&fmt=6" or "&fmt=18" - I know I will not be able to remember such a suffix when I need it, so I was hoping it will be possible to have a script or to use a hotkey or press a button in order to add &fmt=6 or &fmt=18 to any given youtube URL.

Yes, there already is a Greasemonkey script for Firefox, but nothing yet for the IE based browsers.

Watch High-Resolution YouTube Videos

Posted: 29 Feb 2008 03:37 PM CST

The words YouTube and “high-resolution” have never really fit well in the same sentence. YouTube has always greatly limited the resolution of their videos to conserve on bandwidth, but going forward that may not always be the case. As it turns out there is a little something that you can add on to the end of a YouTube URL to have it play a high-resolution version of the same video.

The thing that you need to know, however, is that not every video has been re-encoded into the higher quality. In fact, I’ve tested this “trick” on about 40 videos, and only 7 of them had a higher quality version available. I’ve been reading around about this, and it looks as though newly uploaded videos are being converted a few hours after they’ve been added. And no one really seems to be sure as to whether it depends on the format of video (AVI, WMV, etc…).

I spent about 30 minutes trying to find a good video that has been converted to the higher resolution, and one that was also a good demonstration of why the higher quality matters. To really notice the difference I wanted to get something with a lot of motion, and I thought that there’s nothing better than the skateboarding dog made popular by the iPhone commercial!

Ready for the example? Just add &fmt=6 onto the end of any YouTube URL. Using the skateboarding dog as an example you would take the normal URL:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=CQzUsTFqtW0

and add the &fmt=6 onto the end:

http://youtube.com/w...QzUsTFqtW0&fmt=6

If the YouTube video just sits there loading then that is a sign that the video has not been converted to the higher resolution yet. To really see the difference you should view the video in full screen mode by clicking the button in the bottom-right corner of the player.

Note: Alternatively you can add &fmt=18 and it will play the high-resolution version when available, otherwise it will play the regular version. Here’s a Greasemonkey script that will automatically add &fmt=18 onto the end of each YouTube URL.

I took a still image from part of the video so that you can really compare the differences side-by-side:

youtube-high-quality-videos.png

I can’t wait for YouTube to start rolling this out to all of their videos, and hopefully they’ll add a button to their site where you can easily switch between the low and high quality versions on a per-video basis.

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« Last post by Curt on March 01, 2008, 07:42 AM »
At the Thomas Wolsey School in Ipswich, Suffolk, U.K., there is this teacher, Mick Florey, who was getting tired of pupils loosing files or making all files ending up in the root folder. So he started writing a two-pane replacement for Explorer, in order to make life easier for the teachers. It didn't turn out to be quite as easy as he may have been wanting it to be, but after five years of trying he is now quite happy with the result: FileOrganiser - version 1.126 updated 29' Febr. 2008.

I won't be the judge of his work, but it is different in a good way, I think.

I tried the ForceVision too, and there sure were some fine features, but ind the end we didn't make friends with each other. ImageWalker is fine too, and makes me wonder: just how big / small is a thumb's nail? Anyway, I like this version of the Thumbnail's view:

- click thumbnail (!!) to see full sized ImageWalker > Thumbnail's View:

It sure makes room for a lot of nails, doesn't it...

Maybe only a few of you, if any, were using Stage6, but I will miss it a lot. Yesterday was THE last day, so I downloaded 370 music video files... (22GB - sometimes it really is a good thing to have a fast Internet connection!), and I am looking forward to watch and listen to all this fine music. Of course Stage6 was also housing some crappy videos, but in general the good thing about Stage6 was that you would find much higher quality videos than you would at uTube etcetera. Maybe Stage6 was not The King -...- but: Stage6 has left the building.

The thing I like most about FastView after 3½ days is the power to rapidly view the content of a lot of files of various formats, one after the other, without opening all sorts of file viewers. Other than that, I suspect I will use FastView quite seldom.

you'll be able to view and download videos until Thursday.
:o
... I'm writing this message today to inform you that we plan to shut down Stage6 on February 28, 2008. Upload functionality has already been turned off, and you'll be able to view and download videos until Thursday.

I know this news will come as a shock and disappointment to many Stage6 users, and I'd like to take a few moments to explain the reasons behind our decision. (...)

So why are we shutting the service down? Well, the short answer is that the continued operation of Stage6 is a very expensive enterprise that requires an enormous amount of attention and resources that we are not in a position to continue to provide. There are a lot of other details involved, but at the end of the day it's really as simple as that.

Now, why didn't we think of that before we decided to create Stage6 in the first place, you may ask? That's a good question. When we first created Stage6, there was a clear need for a service that would offer a true high-quality video experience online because other video destinations on the Internet simply weren't providing that to users. A gap existed, and Stage6 arrived to fill it.

As Stage6 grew quickly and dramatically (accompanied by an explosion of other sites delivering high-quality video), it became clear that operating the service as a part of the larger DivX business no longer made sense. We couldn't continue to run Stage6 and focus on our broader strategy to make it possible for anyone to enjoy high-quality video on any device. So, in July of last year we announced that we were kicking off an effort to explore strategic alternatives for Stage6, which is a fancy way of saying we decided we would either have to sell it, spin it out into a private company or shut it down.

I won't (and can't, really) go into too much detail on those first two options other than to say that we tried really hard to find a way to keep Stage6 alive, either as its own private entity or by selling it to another company. Ultimately neither of those two scenarios was possible, and we made the hard decision to turn the lights off and cease operation of the service.

So that's where we are today. After February 28, Stage6 will cease to exist as an online destination. But the larger DivX universe will continue to thrive. Every day new DivX Certified devices arrive on the market making it easy to move video beyond the PC. Products powered by DivX Connected, our new initiative that lets users stream video, photos, music and Internet services from the PC to the TV, are hitting retail outlets. We remain committed to empowering content creators to deliver high-quality video to a wide audience, and we'll continue to offer services that will make it easy to find videos online in the DivX format.

It's been a wild ride, and none of it would have been possible without the support of our users. Thank you for making Stage6 everything that it was.

Sorry! :-[

Edit: However, this does not apply to he pre-made macros, they are all in German.

a text completer or abbreviation expander?

- both.

Is it payware or freeware?

- both

which versions of Windows does it run on?

- all

 ;)

Lite Personal is free, Personal Plus is €16 once, with optional €8.25 per year/updating. Lite is max 15 macros and for max 5 machines. The free lite is missing a few features like drag&drop, text storage, or what it was and I don't know.

One very fine feature is that you can use the hotkey * - which today's Giveawayoftheday, Typing Assistant, won't let you. This will make it so much easier to come up with nice unforgettable hotkeys.

The program: Liquid Story Binder at www.blackobelisksoftware.com
The asking price: $45.95 once (from Plimus) + 'Order CD' option
The forum: http://tech.groups.y.../group/Liquid_Story/

A User's Feedback:

Hello, Jesse!

A thank you:
I have finally figured this program out and I want to say thank you so much! I don't think I'd be able to write my novel without this, but now I'm well on my way. It breaks my heart to think of all the potential great novelists from before LSB who never made it because their organizational skills were too poor.

A marketing tip:
I hope it's not audacious of me, but I would also like to share a marketing tip. It is not at all clear what this program is capable of until one has explored it for some time. In fact, I played with this program for a while and decided it was not up to par. I searched and searched for another program to suit my needs and even considered buying an old Mac G4 just to run another program that was only available for Mac. After I found nothing else to suit my needs, I grudgingly came back to try out LSB some more. Once I really got into it, I disccovered that it is actually a very powerful program and it is exactly what I needed.

The point is, you almost lost me as a customer because I didn't get it. I'm sure this is the case with many other customers, too. While more tutorials would be nice, I think the best thing you can do is provide more and richer examples. It is examples that make it clear what a program is capable of and a potential customer is much more interested in looking at examples than tutorials. The one book example is mostly not an actual example, but some vague instructions filled in the text fields. An actual example of a work would be much more informative. Two or three actual examples would be fantastic.

A feature request:
I would very much love a file type for making tables. I have so many things I want to organize into tables. That would make this program very near perfect.
-a user

Edited: There is a long and very patient trial periode.

Feb 14, 2008: StorYBook 0.4.3

A new kid on the block is the gratis (donations are asked for) StorYBook

box.png

StorYBook
StorYBook is a free, summary-based open source software for novelist and authors that helps you to keep the overview over the strands while writing a book, a novel or a story. StorYBook assists you to structure your book.
1welcome.png
... the modern way of writing
Rather than other products, StorYBook let you write your story with the software of your choice, no matter whether this is OpenOffice, Word or LyX. StorYBook is totally independent. The only links needed are the chapter numbers.

Chronological View:
3chrono_view.png

Book View:
4book_view.png

Edit Chapter:
5edit_chapter.png

Edit Location:
6edit_location.png

Features

StorYBook has two views: the chronological view and the book view. The chronological shows the chapters sorted by date. The book view in contrast shows the chapters sorted by chapter numbers, as you would read it in the final book. Of course in both views the chapters and there related informations can be edited any time.

StorYBook helps to keep the overview, especially for complex stories with two or more strands. You imagine of StorYBook as some kind of a dynamic mind map.

Strands and strand links: Each chapter belongs to a primary strand. Optionally other related, secondary strands can be linked to a chapter.

Person management: Add, edit or remove persons (characters) and assign them to the related chapters.
Location management: Add, edit or remove locations and assign them to the related chapters.

Parts: Large projects can be split into well arranged parts.

Informations: Chapter related informations of the currently selected part are shown as well as warnings for missing chapters or chapters existing twice. A overview list shows all present strands, persons and locations.

Adjustable view: The chronological view can be resized any time to fit to screen, or to get a better overview if many strands are defined. Even more working space is available if you hide the information panel with a simple click on the tool bar.

Instant save: Because StorYBook uses an embedded database to store data (and not a file) each input entered is saved in an instant. Even if the program crashes, you won't loose any data.

Completely stand-alone: Write your book or script with your favorite software. The only link needed is the chapter number.

Customized extensions for customers are possible.

There is not yet any tutorial

General Software Discussion / Facebook's 'software connoisseurs' = active DC members

Facebook finally updated the software connoisseurs's member list.
- now someone needs to upload an image... BTW: Did you ever see this fine cap before? No brands!
Darwin'sCap.gif

If this new facebook group is to make any good, I am thinking it would need something more to tell about DC, and maybe also some kind of gadget. Maybe we could sort of edit+copy&paste our profile presentations from DC? And maybe someone could autor a test-for-fun, in the same style as these public tests? I mean, if we do something, then software connoisseurs at least for a periode will make sense and consist of active DC members, tempting even more new people to join DC. But if we don't take some action software connoisseurs will be just another nothing from facebook...

frontpage produces pretty crappy HTML output... at least the versions of FrontPage I've seen.

Then I would guess you saw versions '97 and 2000. I was using FrontPage 2003. Or maybe the page's code had not yet been optimized? The author had to remember to click that option, before uploading, and FrontPage 2003 would clean up the mess you had written. And it would do an okay job, producing no crap.
