Living Room / Re: Restating Godwin's Law

http://www.sqlnotes.net/

This program has been mentioned in a couple of threads.  I checked it out and tried it out.  What is this for? ...

Well, I didn't read that thread, so I still don't know what it is.  ;)

But here is a story on (end of) Life's Poblems (assumedly without Hitler):

There was a long, long line of spirits at the gate waiting to get into heaven. Not all these spirits could fit into heaven, so the ones who died the worst death would be allowed in.

The first man in line started telling his story, "Well, Peter, you see, I knew that my wife was cheating on me so I decided to come home early from work one day to catch them in action. I got home and searched all over but I couldn''t find him. Then when I walked out onto the balcony, there he was dangling off the darn thing by his fingertips. So I ran and got a hammer then started beating him with it and he fell. Well, the fall didn't kill him, because he landed in a bush so I picked up the refrigerator and threw it on him. Although that killed him, the strain gave me a heart attack, and here I am."

The next man came up and started his story. "St. Peter, I always work out on my balcony on the 14th floor of my apartment building. I was on my bike one day and I fell off when it flipped. I sailed over the rail and I thought ''Please God spare my life'' and he did. I caught on to a balcony below me. I was even happier when a man discovered me hanging there. But all of a sudden he started beating my hands with a hammer so I fell again. But the dear Lord saved me again when I landed in a bush. But I''m here now because the guy threw his refrigerator on top of me."

It was now the third guy's turn to start his story. "Well, Peter, just picture this. I'm hiding butt naked in this married chick''s refrigerator ..."

General Software Discussion / DLLRegisterServer missing too often. What to do?
« Last post by Curt on March 28, 2008, 10:30 AM »
The dark clouds are gathering. They used to be on the horizon, in the distance, but now I feel they are threatening to cover my very neighbourhood. More and more often I will get this little error message saying this or that DLL couldn't be found, allthough they usually are where they ought to be. So I right-click the darn thing, and tell Explorer to register the DLL, but XP's RunDLL will answer that the DLLRegisterServer is missing.

I have no idea how to tell XP that the DLL Register Server is NOT missing, (I mean, it was here yesterday, wasn't it), but what can I do about it?  :tellme:  - other than to re-start the PC, and hope for the best of it, or re-install XP (which is not yet an option)?

US $ . One thing, though, is that the prices that I found for version 10, started at $46 + VAT, not at $40. We really should try to get a rebate for DC, or maybe QuickView Plus 10 is just one of those programs that doesn't come cheap, so to speak... (lots of pun intended).

edited for spelling

Holy smokes, Batman! I just noticed the "File Finder" entry in my context menu and put it through its paces. Wow! It's PowerDesk Pro 6's search feature. Works without indexing and is as quick as Search GT (and as accurate/thorough as well).  ...

Well, 'Robin', I must say that I don't agree with you on this. I gave File Finder the same test as the others, and my accuse is, that when it was told to search for any kind of objects (not inside the files) all over my PC, it used several minutes to do what Search GT did in merely 2.7 seconds. But I would expect it to search considerably faster if it is set to search for certain types of objects (say, documents) only. Do you maybe have such an option as default?

I performed the search from PowerDesk > File Finder, not from context menu > File Finder (which I have erased).

Now where is my license for QVP??

Outside USA the prices are in between of $52 and $65 for 1 'PC home-user' copy of QuickView Plus version 10. Version 9 was $52 including the CD. I cancelled my order...

I am still left somewhere in between darkness and light:
is a stellent viewer just another word for a pre-viewer
- like my tooltips letting me read the content of a text file ??

We must remember to also pay attention to the build numbers; this one is 5508.

... The application to enable download of XP SP3 RC2 Refresh is the same application as was used to distribute XP SP3 RC2. This is an application that can be found at the Microsoft Download Center. Running this application on a machine with Windows XP Service Pack 2 will enable Windows Update to offer XP SP3 RC2 Refresh to that machine. Build to build upgrades are not supported for this beta release, so if you have installed XP SP3 RC1 or XP SP3 RC2, please uninstall it before running this application. We strongly recommend that only this application be used to obtain RC2 Refresh and that evaluation and feedback be based solely on releases provided directly by Microsoft. ...

It is good to know that Ava Find works for someone, because when I tried it "File Edit View Tools Help" stayed greyed out and unreachable for ever, so I was unable to do any settings, but gave up all of the project.

If visitors from other parts of the world (read: warmer places) ever should come back to our part of the world, their first visit better be in the late summer, say, early August. Otherwise I fear they will freeze their a** off, and never return. If we're lucky they should then have the chance to understand by experience the Danish law article wich says it is forbidden to be nude where it is not common to be nude, and allowed where it is common...

come on! Denmark is a wonderful country!

- goes to show that you live north from DK (read: an even colder place)!  :P

can anyone decipher these registry keys?

Not too sure what you mean by 'decipher', but:

CLEARING THE TRAY ICON HISTORY:

> run 'regedit.exe'

> goto key 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \TrayNotify'

> delete keys 'IconStreams' & 'PastIconsStream'

> start task manager, go to processes and kill explorer.exe

> go to applications in the task manager, hit new task and type 'explorer.exe'

> explorer will now reboot and woohey, your icons should return.

> crazy if you ask me.........
-perrelet, Tech Support Guy user

Anyway, I have tried this and it didn't work for me, because, I guess, I had too many programs starting, and so  too many icons.

Do any of you have some of your system tray icons disappear for no reason?

If you have a lot of programs starting at the same time, it may be the major reason for some icons not showing up. When I installed a startup manager and gave each program plenty of time to launch all alone in piece, my problem with missing icons was solved.

I was facing this issue even as I read the post. Started Process Explorer, killed explorer.exe and ran it again via Process Explorer's run command. The missing icon's back again

It would have been sufficient to restart the missing icon's program
- at least it always has been, on my XP.

this one might help

- sounds promising:

SUBJECT: "unable to open file [20213:2:2]"

I'm using Ulead Media Studio 8.0 and what saved my work was the backup folder that the program creates. It makes a folder with many fles from 01 up that you can open the last one created and that one has the latest information. I just upened the last one, copied the time lines and pasted them in a new document. And Bingo, every thing was in it's place.

Thanks, nxqd, I have been using DM2 since long ago, and think it is great. However, only last week I removed it from start because I've found FileBox eXtender (from Hyperionics) which is easier for my unstable XP to run. Whatsmore, the question was not merely to minimize to systray, but to Start, minimized to systray.

Besides, I have ditched Firefox (again again), and taken up Avant (again) 11.6.08 - and so far I like it a lot! Plus, it will start minimized to tray... Of course I miss a few features from the Mozilla addons, but I am waiting for the final stable release of version 3 before I will try Firefox again. Beta 4 caused me a couple of annoying problems.

Aurionix FileUsage Tool gave these size and usage measurements:

The Aurionix folder itself is 739 KB which still is pretty small, I think
and Aurionix works better than the other two of the kind I have tested.

55o ?!! Celcius or Fahrenheit?

Edit: I realize 55o Fahrenheit is merely 13o Celcius, so I take it of course is Celcius
- so forget my silly question - I could have checked before showing my ignorance  :-[
- it is just that after 6 hours my CPU is 43o, so I thought 55o was a lot!

I really wish my English was a hundred times better. You guys are ruining my mood this evening. I gave you a hint: I have been a hifiholic for thirty years, not merely an audiofile; I have studied this subject. First In First Out (FIFO) is *NOT* to be taken literally! FIFO is First In ALMOST First Out - the teqnique brings distortion, and distortion is not "perfect". I gladly admit that FIFO was a major step forward, in bringing the distortion down - today the distortion via FIFO is close to be measured in less than a nano second - but to talk about digital perfectness is not trustworthy; even a nano second is too late = distortion.

There isn't a way to send a link that auto opens on another computer. ... Someone at the other computer has to open the link, or not. ... If you find a way to do it, please let me know ...

I really must learn to explain myself a lot better in Dangli.. ehh.. English.
I me myself will check the emails, and then open their links. Okay?

.. There is no arguing this ...
- guess what?!

This is a constant topic among audiophiles...

Your contra-arguments have been used ever since the CD was first launched, and still they improve the digital media. How can they keep improving something that is "perfect"? Because it is not perfect, I would say.

...
I really don't care if you can measure the difference in digital audio cables or not. The difference is there

- but you may keep your attitude on this, and I will keep mine.

... For thirty years I was a hifiholic. I already have had this 'debate' too often.

Other than this, I am glad sound quality has improved even more.

The very idea is strange to me; I can not understand why this feature is being wanted. Whenever I am in (similar?) situation I will simply mail the link to my address. My e-mail client is placed in Start, so I will start every session by checking e-mails and their links.

But of course, I you guys really can write such a thingy, it would be cool, I guess.
