This has got to be the crappiest website I've ever seen. I'd forgotten about it years ago but this thread made me remember it.

THANKS A LOT! >:(

http://www.doodie.com/

This could scar you for life. You have been warned.
But tub girl is worse. If you don't know what it is, please don't even google it. If you can't stop your curiosity, then just read about it from Wikipedia or someplace rather than having to actually see it.

EDIT: And just to clarify, doodie.com is relatively safe for viewing (but maybe NSFW), being just generally a lot of "bathroom humor." What's in the spoiler, however, is absolutely disgusting and horrifying.

I guess you've got a personality only a mother could love...sometimes. :P

I didn't think you were flaming me. I just felt a little guilty about not being helpful. No worries. :)

But why "free beer" and not something else like "free lunch"?

This reminds me of another confusion about the correct interpretation of the word "free." When the movie Nacho Libre came out, my mother asked my brother (who is fluent in Spanish) what the title meant. He said that libre meant "free" and she said something like "Oh, Free Nachos?" and he had to clarify that it meant free as in freedom, not free lunch. ;D

I wasn't trying to be helpful, I was trying to be funny. Sorry. :-[

I don't know anything about it, either. I don't even read the WSJ.

I have a lot of unfinished projects that I've abandoned without admitting it. (Though I guess I just admitted it.)

Most of them weren't even finished enough for me to use and enjoy, so I don't think they count.  :-[

Living Room / Re: Spokeo - new stalking social networking site?
« Last post by Deozaan on January 10, 2011, 04:53 PM »
I'm usually pretty good about not giving out personal information on websites and setting privacy controls to the most restrictive, so the information they had about me was outdated and incomplete. They had me at an address I haven't lived at for a couple years now and didn't have my wife listed (even though we both lived at that address at the same time...)

As I said, I was able to opt out fairly easily and without any hassle (except for creating a fake e-mail address for the opt out process).

I checked out some of my family and it's a bit more scary in some cases. Photos of the front of their house, with their cars in the driveway (from Google Street View, I'm sure).

Also, I've heard from a friend that if you are listed multiple times, they tell you that "in order to prevent abuse" they can only accept so many opt-out requests from the same e-mail address. He's more web savvy than I am. He says he ended up having to use multiple e-mail addresses and multiple IPs to remove them all.

Spokeo sure is spooky-o indeed!

seems to only be for usa

Yeah, I thought the OP said that so I didn't mention it, but I guess I was mistaken. I've updated my post to reflect that.

NECROTHREAD RESURRECTION COMPLETE!

I don't know how I missed this post 2 years ago, but this really is spooky!

Seriously. Go to spokeo.com (USA only) and type in your name (and any past names for you married ladies). If you don't like your information being displayed, click on your name (at the left) and then copy the URL of your profile, then click the Privacy link in the bottom right corner of the page. You will be given the opportunity to paste the URL to opt out of the service.

You may also want to consider the other ways people might be able to search for you. E-mail addresses, phone numbers, etc.

You will probably have to do this multiple times if your name brings up multiple search results.

The good news is that I just did this and was instantly removed from the search results.

Technology sure is amazing, but also really scary when you consider the ways it can be abused.

Also good if you are away from you own personal music collection as you can save/retrieve your own playlists in GS.

Why would you ever be away from your own personal music collection when there is Subsonic?

EDIT: Also, once you see it you cannot unsee it: The Grooveshark logo looks kind of like Hitler.

The original is "Free as in free speech, and not free as in free beer".

Even that's not simple enough for the masses. My brother and I once ran a somewhat popular website and when ads weren't providing enough income to cover the site we started to offer paid membership plans. We got a few e-mails complaining about it, one person even said something to the effect of "Why should I have to pay, it's a free country!"

So my point is that even using the word in a context that would imply the correct definition can still confuse people. That's why I strongly recommend something like "Free as in freedom as opposed to free as in price."

EDIT: clarified a sentence that didn't sound right after re-reading it.

Living Room / Re: My 'LOL' alternative
« Last post by Deozaan on January 10, 2011, 01:16 AM »
I don't laugh out loud very often when speaking to people online, and I've always hated the feelings of dishonesty I've gotten if I typed "LOL" when I wasn't really laughing out loud. So I never type it, except when I'm being overly silly and speaking in LOLspeak (usually to show that I'm being facetious).

But on the somewhat rare occasion when something truly is funny enough to make me LOL, I still don't want to type "LOL" because then it wouldn't convey how funny I truly thought it was, since it seems almost everyone types LOL for everything that's even slightly amusing.

So I guess I don't type LOL either way, due to its frequent misuse and abuse.

Living Room / Re: Can we stop with the diagonal screen length thing?
« Last post by Deozaan on January 09, 2011, 11:46 PM »
Really?  The PS3 games are NOT 1080p HD?  Why not?  i thought that was the whole point of the kickass PS3 system, the amazing graphics.

Some are. But these tend to be the ones with simpler graphics, I think JavaJones did a good job explaining the reason why.

The biggest issue with 720p in 3d rendered images like console games is antialiasing. If you have 720p imagery with good antialiasing, it really won't matter. Problem is *good* antialiasing is often about as demanding as simply pushing more pixels, so you can get 720p with good AA, or 1080p with no AA. Usually 720p with good AA is actually better.

Sadly, anti-aliasing has never been one of the strengths of the Playstation platform.

with widescreen monitors, the height is very important.
Mine is 16:10, I already miss the height - if it were 16:9 I'd need another one on top...

16:9 should never have been allowed to make its way into the computer world.

I'm curious. Could you explain your complaints with 16:9? I believe my current monitor is 16:10, but I heard that is rare.

My biggest complaint with HD is how all these supposedly HD PS3 games are really "only" 720p instead of full 1080p. :( I own 4 PS3 games on Blu-Ray and the only one that supports 1080p is the one that has pixelated 2D SNES-style graphics (Disgaea 3 for those that are interested). What good is HD output if you're using SD sprites?

EDIT: Added image.

I can

Yeah, I still don't understand the whole "free as in beer" thing. Beer is free?

They need to just say something like "free as in price" to clarify what they mean. Beer doesn't bring either definition of "free" to my mind.

Then again, beer frees you from your money and your inhibitions, so in a way I guess it could be talking about price or freedom (or both).

Living Room / Re: Anti-Necrospamming
« Last post by Deozaan on January 06, 2011, 03:31 PM »
Well, considering the original thread and last reply were posted nearly 2 years ago (until yesterday), I think this illustrates very well why something should be done about very old threads that have been inactive for some time.

It's like having a 5 hour conversation with someone over a variety of topics when suddenly the person you're speaking with makes a reply to something you said in the first 15 minutes. Where did that come from? Haven't we moved on by now? What does that have to do with anything we've been talking about for the past 4.75 hours? (Feel free to do your own mathematical conversions of years rather than hours.)

Maybe when I wrote the original topic, I was really mad about something (such as what was then a "recent" necro-spammer trend). But now, two years later, that "trend" isn't much of a trend, so the whole conversation is pointless because it no longer reflects the current reality. Or maybe I've had a change of heart since then. Maybe I'm a completely different person now than I was then.

The point is, when someone resurrects a really old thread, and it's been so long that nobody remembers it or perhaps they are a "new" member (within the past two years since the thread was last discussed) and have never seen it before, people start jumping in like it's a fresh conversation because they don't notice the date, when really it's been dead in the water for years.

To the person doing the resurrecting, it's a bit like coming up with the perfect comeback two weeks later. They really want to say it, but they know it's no longer relevant since so much time has passed, so they don't say it. Unfortunately, because the date is so easy to miss, people often don't have the perspective of time to keep themselves from realizing that though what they have to say is perhaps completely valid and would have added to the conversation at the time, the conversation is dead and not worth bringing back up again, especially in a manner as if it never ended.

In normal conversation, the way to go back to an older topic is to first remind a person that they had it (or somehow transition the person back to that subject) and then make your point. e.g. "Hey, remember when we were talking about such-and-such? Well I've been thinking about it and. . ."

I don't know if locking topics is the correct solution. At the time it seemed like a good idea. But now that I'm two years wiser (that's debatable, I'm sure) it still seems to me there ought to be some notification to people that they're reading a really old thread, or that the new post(s) by someone else were made to a really old thread. And definitely some sort of notification when people are replying to a really old thread (even if a reply has recently been posted, IMO). Kind of like that one that says "Hey, while you were typing, someone else replied to the thread." It's all an effort to help you make sure your point is "up to date" and as relevant as possible. You can still ignore it and post it exactly as you had it, or you can read the reply and make any necessary adjustments to your response.

I guess that's all I have to say about that. For now anyway. :)

But it wasn't doing it before. . .

Hmmm...I have no idea, then since I didn't change any of that code.  Does it work in a non-UAC folder?

After thinking about it for a while, I realized what happened was that previously I installed all my programs onto another drive, and (somewhat) recently I reformatted my computer and started putting things into the Program Files directory. I guess I haven't listened to music much lately in Trout since it took me so long to notice it.

I started watching some of his Star Trek reviews, and when I got a few minutes into First Contact, I realized I hadn't seen the movie yet. So I went to Netflix to watch it but it wasn't on Instant Watch. But the New (2009) Star Trek was available, so I watched that one instead. The funny thing about it was that he made a huge complaint about how in First Contact the Borg created a time warp bubble just outside of Earth in the opening scene so they could attack Earth from the past or something. But that's almost exactly how the new Star Trek movie starts, but he absolutely loved it.

I'll let him explain to you why. :)

Despite the tone and presentation, this guy has the attention to detail of a super fan/nerd, while at the same time ripping these things apart -- that's part of what makes sticking with the long review so rewarding.

Yeah, he actually seems really smart, educated, and intelligent. Especially about cinema (and Star Trek). But the vulgar, drunk, pizza roll loving, serial cat-rapist, hooker kidnapper, wife-murderer skit kind of throws you off.

I was bored and not really enjoying it much for about the first 20-25 minutes, but then he starts to pick the movie apart and point out real reasons (with examples) why the movie was bad and that's when it started to get more enjoyable.

Still not sure why he sounds drunk and has slurred speech. Probably just part of the humor.

On to part 2.
