Heh yeah. Though to be fair a 7 part video project series named "Just get an AC and some extension cables and be done with it" might be less fun to watch on Youtube

yeah and if they did that what would they do with the extra $5,000 of money, 200 hours, of time they would have saved.  plus who wants to live in a nice climate controlled room anyway.

Somehow i missed this post originally... I will fix it so custom document opener can be specified locally.  I'll try to get an update out in the next week.

It's always nice to hear from folks using my software and to hear feature requests -- sometimes i have to hear the same request from a few different people before it clicks.

And please excuse my slowness in replying and implementing -- i've spent the last 3-4 weeks from morning to night working on upgrading the forum software here (just about done!), so i've been slow in attending to my apps.

i'm pretty sure i fixed the complaint about the nag reminder for the portable version..

Just a note: The DcUpdater is not for portable use.
All of my applications will do automatic update checking on their own now, but if an update is found they will open the webpage and let you download and update yourself.

i can't really say that there is one -- im just used to having irfanview for my default app to open an image file when i double-click it from windows explorer.  i suppose i should try using xnview to see how it compares.

When double clicking to view images in explorer, my #1 need is speed, followed by good default scaling options, and only-once instance even if i click multiple files.

So I have a beta version of the new forum online on a server graciously provided by DC member PhilB.
It's a complete working forum with all accounts and posts from main DC forum as of July 27 or so.

If anyone wants to get a sneak peak at the new look and feel, try it and help look for bugs, and request features, just message me (or mail me [email protected]) and i will provide the url.

just another +1 for xnview as an image folder browser.
i still use irfanview when viewing individual files, but when i have to search and browse a large directory tree full of images, xnview is my tool of choice; very nice searching/filtering features.

This absolutely sounds like it should already exist.

A simple easy to use utility that can batch add captions to images, with some flexibility of where to put the caption and set the text based on filename, filedate, etc.

It must exist.. if it doesn't one of us needs to make it quickly.

I do already have some code for adding captions to images and autosizing text for it, etc.  so if we don't find anything good perhaps ill make it.

FARR doesn't search INSIDE files -- you're going to need a different app for that.
There are some good free ones.  Agent Ransack is one i like: https://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack

Very cool.

See my screenshot above.

Essentially there are 2 links to the unread pages.  The first is the text links TO THE RIGHT OF (not underneath) your avatar at top of page.
There is also an UNREAD button on the buttonbar at top of page.

5791
Ok so those of you who use "unread since last visit" -- you click on the text link near your avatar, is that right?
Screenshot - 7_26_2015 , 9_46_12 PM_ver001.png

And not the "UNREAD POSTS" button on the button bar, right (as that one is not "since last visit")?

My original intention was to get rid of the links under to the right of the avatar, and keep the button going to all unread -- but it sounds like a decent number of regular users are using both links, so i have to find a way to add them both to the homepage.  I guess the most reasonable way is to leave those 2 links underto the right of the avatar.  Alternatively i could just make the button go to "Unread sine last visit", which has a link to the other.
5792
you can still just one-click on it to immediately go to unread posts.

but i'd like some feedback about whether people prefer the "unread since last visit" vs "unread" -- personally i always never use "unread since last visit". anyone?

As I suspected from your post, you are familiar enough with image formats to know when to use each
I can't really disagree with anything you've said -- though for a non-mobile forum post i would always go with png.

Hi Mav,

Thanks for your clear comments.  Sounds like I must have lost the Save As quality option somewhere along the line -- I will try to put it back, and make sure it defaults to the option set in the configuration.
And i'll have a look at the quality setting range -- maybe i can tweak it.

ps. You probably know that screenshots should almost never be saved in jpg format -- that png is going to be more appropriate in almost every case.

Hi mindstormer.

All of my apps use configuration files, and not the registry, to save their settings.

The only difference between the portable and installer versions is a file called ConfigDir in the program directory which tells the app WHERE to store its configuration files.

For a portable install, it says to save them in the program directory; for the installer it uses a default directory, which will be under the users Documents\DonationCoder directory path.

In both cases, you can simply copy the settings file between machines to copy your settings.

In addition to a main settings file, FARR keeps some info in a couple of other files.  There is a launchhistory.ini and a searchhistory.ini file, and custom aliases are in their own files.

All can be copied between machines.

The installer and portable executables are identical, the only difference is the ConfigDir file and which tells the app what directory to store its configuration settings in.

« Last post by mouser on July 26, 2015, 02:49 AM »
ok first thing is exit CHS, make sure it's not running, backup your CHS database folder (will be in the program folder on xp or portable, or in documents\CHS on winvista or laste), so you preserve everything as it is now.
once that's done, restart chs, go to options -> Backup/Maintenance tab and choose Veritfy, Repair, Optimize Database.
see if that helps.
if not, tell me again the kind of error you are getting.

CHS also makes backups, you could choose Restore Database Backup from that tab.

But tell me the error in more detail because i can't tell if maye the problem is with the formatting presets.. which are stored in files not the database.. perhaps one of those files got corrupted and is confusing the program? if so you might try exiting, backing up the presets folder and then deleting its contents and restarts.

Perhaps before any of that a smart thing would be make sure you arent out of disk space, and reboot the pc.  Never hurts to check those things first.

Let me know!

This is somewhat crazy and painful to watch:

Whole Room Water Cooling Project
https://www.youtube....qLN5OSZxn3Z4t1_xFunu

They set up watercooling through multiple workstations and encounter lots of difficulties, as you can imagine.

It's a very ambitious project for a group of very committed hardware hackers.  Cool to watch but painful as well..

Maybe try to view the list of recently opened files: http://www.nirsoft.n...cent_files_view.html

I don't have any experience with such things happening in MS Word, but there are situations where a Windows feels like you shouldn't be allowed to save a file in the location you are trying to save it, but rather than complain it will save it in a different location while PRETENDING to save it in the location you have asked it.  I forget the directory it saves to in this case, it's some weird hidden directory -- maybe others can remind me?

I wouldn't think MS Word would fall victim to that, but it's possible.  Another thing you might try is to retrace your steps and do the same things again paying more attention to any clues, and see if it saves changes the next time.  Also check the list of recent files in Word.

It doesn't sound like this is what's happened to you, but one thing that i have experienced with a compressed archive before is that my file explorer has a feature that lets you browse inside it as if it was a virtual directory -- and it is possible in some cases to open a file in there for editing while doing this virtual browsing, and think you have opened the actual file, when in reality you are editing a temporary file in a temporary directory.

Hi George/Netstrider -- welcome to the site and please make yourself at home.

If you email me ([email protected]) I'm happy to send you a full license key now, and you can donate later if you still want to.

As for the IRS -- DonationCoder is not a registered non-profit organization, so i'm afraid that you can't deduct donations to the site (see here for more info about the site).

the Woodstock version of "I'm Goin' Home"
The crying video above doesn't do it for me, but I'm Going Home is a great song and a very cool performance i've watched many times.
