Skwire Empire / Re: Release: sWeather (tray-based weather app)
« Last post by skwire on February 23, 2017, 12:44 PM »
This is due to the fact that sWeather uses 32-bit PNG and ICO files with transparency.  If the user's computer is set to 16-bit colour, they will not display properly (as you discovered).

You're quite welcome and I'm glad you find it useful.  Welcome to the DonationCoder site as well.

Salvaged plenty of things just by replacing the capacitors in the equipment, spending <$20 and an hour or so has always been preferable to spending a lot more to replace the equipment

This.  I've done the same to many a monitor/TV/motherboard over the years.

As of 2017-01-25, my sWeather isn't updating and it's interesting that the header says Thursday, January 1, 0:00 AM...so it's gone back all the way to 2015. Interesting. I'll give reinstallation a shot
-kevlar_heart42 (January 25, 2017, 09:34 AM)

As Ath said, this behaviour is the the result of the Yahoo! site acting up.  Please don't bother reinstalling sWeather as that's not going to fix things.  Rest assured that, if the API changes, I'll do my best to fix things but this isn't one of those times.  There is nothing you can do except be patient with the Yahoo! service.

Running a chkdsk sometimes results in it finding the sort of slack space you describe.
581
Skwire you might look into it, it might be simply an option you could use to not include full paths but just relative paths.

That's the thing; I have looked at in the past.   ;)  I don't recall the actual reason behind not having that as an option, but there was a reason.   :P
582
How to get spinzip to not include the full paths in the zip files? I want the generated zip files to have the files in there right from the root of the zip file. Not folders should be included.

There isn't a way.  It's been a long while since I've worked on SpinZip; I recall I had a reason (or a limitation) for doing it the current way (with full paths) but I don't remember why.  Apologies.
583
It looks great and I'd be happy to run it on my gear for you.  =]
584
Works great now!
Thanks!

You're welcome and thanks for reporting back.   :)

I think what I know because the Width Colums sorts it is wrong... the values are treated  like alphabethic so 1280 is prior to 512, right?

Yes, an oversight on my part.  Fixed here:

v1.5.1 - 2017-01-16
! New columns in v1.5.0 weren't sorting properly.  (Thanks, antekgla)

Hi, I recently discover this little program and I find very useful!

I'm glad you like the application.

would be nice to have the Display Aspect Ratio or a colum only with the width (or height) of the video.

If I understood you correctly, your request is in the new version below:

Website | Download
v1.5.0 - 2017-01-15
+ Added separate Width, Height, and Aspect Ratio columns.  You may have to
choose "View > Justify columns" from the menu make the new columns appear.
      (Thanks, antekgla)
+ Added "Move to Top" and "Move to Bottom" functionality to toolbar and
      right-click menu.
+ Added a "Copy text" option to the Edit menu.

I am having intermittent problems as other have stated: sWeather goes "blank" at times, reporting NO DATA for all locations (even Codyville!).
-kevlar_heart42 (January 10, 2017, 09:27 AM)

I've noticed this as well and it's a Yahoo! Weather API issue.   >:(  Unfortunately, I can't do anything about it.    :(

Download this commandline wallpaper switcher from here: http://www.sg20.com/wallpaperchanger/

Then use the Windows Task Scheduler to set up a task on each hour to change the wallpaper to whichever image you want.

Maybe contacting the webmaster and ask?

I'm not holding out much hope, but I did email them asking about API access.   :)

No clue how useful this will be (in terms of how good the end-APIs are) but for this I would suggest reading through:
https://www.programm.../apis?category=20278

I went through that entire list and none of the were viable for a freeware application.  There were either:

  • Dead
  • Not free
  • Free, but limited to only the first 150 characters of a song

still no joy, pity :-(

Yeah, it is.  It wasn't the most complete lyrics site around but the API was easy to use and free to access.  The app works quite nicely, too, when the site is available.  I am keeping my eye on the site, though.

If I've got 6 folders open I'd like to color-code, number, or iconify each one for easy recognition.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you, right-click the folder, choose the "Customize" tab, and click the "Change Icon..." button.

Nope.  Mostly because with Windows 10, I haven't really figured out how to get a licensed version into a VM since I don't have a version of windows 10 for it. :(

You can get a free, direct-from-Microsoft, time-limited (expires in April), Windows 10 VM here: https://developer.mi...ads/virtual-machines

I've uploaded v1.0.2 with better startup checking for Windows 10. The ChartLyrics site still isn't up at the time of this post but at least sLyrics shouldn't go unresponsive now. I'm pretty frustrated that the ChartLyrics website went unreachable after developing this app. The site has been flakey in the past, but not to this extent. If anybody knows of another free lyrics site with a free API, feel free to let me know.

NANY 2017 Entry Information

Application Name sPinger
Supported OSes Windows 7 (Probably works, but not tested, on Windows XP/8/Vista/10)
Web Page Website
Download Link Download
Author Jody Holmes (Skwire Empire)

Description
If you’re up for it, some background is in order for this application so click the Spoiler button if interested.  If not, skip to the TL;DR section below.

Spoiler
In a network operations environment, there was always a need to quickly ping large numbers of IP addresses. The best application, by far, that I found is an app called HELIUM PINGer. Even though it’s an older app, it is a truly multi-threaded, outstandingly fast application that works extremely well. It was indispensable when I worked in network operations several years ago and I still keep it in my network app toolbox. If you need such an app, look no further. Another application in this vein is the professionally done PingInfoView by the incomparable Nir Sofer. I keep that installed as well.

Now, on to sPinger. During my tenure in network operations (2000-2010), I wrote a suite of applications, in my spare time, that my group used. One of these was a mass pinger, like the above, with a few extra features that we used extensively.

The first was the ability to quickly ping entire lists of subnets for only the reachable addresses. This allowed to you create a basic baseline of reachable customers and devices before, say, making a network change. You could easily see if your changes, in realtime, had any adverse affects in regards to reachability.
Another feature was in regards to IP subnet generation. Even though HELIUM PINGer has a subnet generator, you can only generate one subnet’s worth of addresses at a time. We needed the ability to simply paste in a list of subnets and quickly generate the addresses for all of them.
My applications are written in AutoHotkey so the main drawback of my original mass pinger app was that it was single-threaded because AutoHotkey itself is single-threaded. For DonationCoder’s NANY 2017 promotion, I wanted to see if I could rewrite that app with some pseudo-multi-threading and I’ve accomplished that. However, there is no way my app can compete with HELIUM PINGer when it comes to CPU usage when multiple threads are in use. Again, if you need an app like this for heavy-duty use, just get HELIUM PINGer already. That said, the multi-thread functionality is entirely configurable within sPinger, so you should be able to find a happy medium. As a final treat, I’ve made the list icons configurable and have included lots of fun themes I put together (see screenshot below).

TL;DR:
Ping multiple IP addresses and hostnames with fun icon themes. Features:

Pseudo multi-threaded.
Quickly generate lists of all addresses from a list of subnets.
Quickly generate lists of only pingable addresses from a list of subnets.  This feature is not available on Windows 8 & Windows 10.
DNS scan mode to quickly retrieve hostnames from IP addresses.
Fun icon themes in the list to show good, bad, and expired pings.
Configurable list — colours, fonts, etc.
