« Last post by tinjaw on March 10, 2008, 03:56 PM »
OK, So it looks like the list is just

  • tinjaw
  • darwin
  • Perry Mowbray

Remember the more people that get in on this deal the greater the discount. Even just one more would make a difference.

I'll place an order on Monday March 10, 2008.

Living Room / Re: Timeline Software

Another cool timeline to check out: http://simile.mit.edu/timeline/

Web-based, but FOSS. Not really geared to printed timelines but plenty of WOW factor for dynamic ones.

Thanks Jimdoria. That's nice. And their example timeline of Judeo-Christian history ties in nicely with my question about comparing holy books elsewhere.

p.s. I think I will PM Darwin about this. And, is it f0dder that works at a museum? They'd be interested too I believe.

Living Room / Re: the award for most clueless pc user ever - my candidate.
« Last post by tinjaw on March 10, 2008, 11:26 AM »
Most clueless group of pc users[1] are, without a doubt, the Upper and Lower houses of the U.S. Legislature.

[1] If you define "pc user" as somebody who has a staffer print out emails for you so you can dictate one back for the staffer to type up and send. 'Cuz dat der inkertubez is komplikated.

Why do people (I call them idiots) seem to think this Inkertubes thing is any different that what we have had for hundreds of years. We had ink and paper. We had telegraphs. We had phones. We had postcards. We had packages.

I can call you from a pay phone.
I can send you a letter without a return address. (Or a fake one)
I can pay the newspaper with cash to post an ad in the paper.
Etc.
Etc.

But we all know that it is because these people (idiots) *most likely* think AOL == Internet and all they do "on the computer" is get email from their grandkids.

The software (engine) gets free updates, but the data files, are updated only by subscription.

That would follow other licensing models of that nature.

Today's the first day I think I have 100% of my mental capabilities back after being so sick for over a week. I'm going to spend some time refamiliarizing myself with IPython. There is a project for work that I think I will tinker with. It is similar to DCUpdater.

The review of previous version on Donationcoder may be found here.

I'm going to use version 3.0 for about a month and then post an update to the review.

You can store the documents on a subversion server not on your computer.

Maybe I'm missing something (quite possible) , but filesystem compatibility shouldn't be an issue anyways with ntfs-3g (usually installed by default on todays Linux systems) or ext2ifs that's very easy to set up on windows. I'd recommend using NTFS though, as I trust ntfs-3g more than ext2ifs (especially for the newer ext3 fs R/W)

I was looking at it strictly from a simplicity POV. With FAT32 there is no need for special drivers and the partition would be accessible even via a LiveCD. If you are willing to accept the additional work and don't need universal access, then any of your suggested solutions would work just fine.

What is the difference?
-wilfrednilsen (March 08, 2008, 09:44 PM)

If you store the documents on a separate server (for example on a Dreamhosted subversion server or your own separate server) you have the advantage of getting at the documents from any computer with a network connection to that box. You also don't have to worry about accidentally deleting the repos as you are messing with partitioning and all that jazz.

I actually use a third option myself. I use a Dreamhosted subversion repository and run a local mirror on my laptop via svk.

Yeah! I really missed the forums. I can't count how many times I went through the process of going... "Oh, I know! I'll just search the DC foru... ums... :(". Thanks for all the hard work you folks put in to get things back up and running. And a special Cody Thank You to Gothi[c].

Renegade, I feel your pain. I'm waiting on three RMAs right now.

This weekend for me must involve some coding, but I have tonnes of other stuff to do so it will be difficult. I need to finish building me server, put the sides on the case and haul it down into the basement. Then clean of the piles of stuff on my two computer desks that have everything except computers on them. The list goes on and on.

But at least two hours each day of Python should be good. I'm going to just tinker for the purpose of getting better with IPython.

I also think I caught Bronchitis from a coworker.  :(

Me thinks CHRISTINEVT and JamesPay are company spokespersons. They each have one post and joined just to make that post based on their profile.

Once again, we don't mind if you work for a company. We DO mind if you don't say so thinking we aren't smart enough to figure it out.

« Last post by tinjaw on February 29, 2008, 10:28 AM »
You can store the documents on a subversion server not on your computer. For example, get a Dreamhost account and use the subversion server that comes with it. Another option is to make the data partition FAT32 and create the repo as a file-based repo (not DB-based) and both Linux and Windows svn clients should handle it just fine.

That petition is completely worthless. It is just 25K people begging for Stage 6 to keep bleeding money and time so they can get More Free Stuff. They would be much better coming up with a single sustainable business plan than a million worthless signatures.

The only thing I can contribute to this thread is that Refactoring Databases: Evolutionary Database Design by Scott W. Ambler and Pramod J. Sadalage is on my ToBuy/ToRead list. I own some of Ambler's other books and read lots of his articles and think he does a good job.

WinRar. . . I just never really liked it. (I think it's the icons).

So far, I'm very pleased with Securezip -- the price is absolutely right, and it's fast and effective.  Also: I like the icons.

FYI for allen and others: You can download themes for WinRAR. WinRAR has even registered the MIME type, so when you download them, WinRAR will automatically install them. There is quite a variety of icons available.

Coding Snacks / IDEA: Sex Sells Spider
« Last post by tinjaw on February 29, 2008, 08:47 AM »
I would like a spider that crawls the web and finds every website that has a headshot of a smiling female with a telephone headset on. I would also like it to keep track of how many of these websites sell anything that is remotely related to females with headsets. Within that set, I would like to identify the subset that not only have products that have nothing to do with females with headsets, yet still feature a headshot of a female with a telephone headset on their virtual software box.

Of course, if you make this program, it must be provided under the Female With Headset (FWH) license that permits use of binary and source code of the program for any purpose as long as the picture of a female with a headset remains on all splashscreens, about screens, help screens, and any virtual software boxshots or marketing literature.

Developer's Corner / Re: source control systems: what's the best?

Since we have mentioned Subversion and Visual Studio, I thought this crowd would be interested in this except from the openCollabNet newsletter.

openCollabNet Technical Newsletter - Volume 15, February 2008

AnkhSVN, the Visual Studio plugin for Subversion, is now on
openCollabNet. AnkhSVN allows you to perform common Subversion
operations from inside the Microsoft Visual Studio (MSVS) IDE, such as
viewing the status of your source code, updating your working copy, and
committing changes. You can even browse your repository and use your
favorite diff tool. CollabNet now partners with the AnkhSVN open source
development team to accelerate the development of the plugin and grow
the community. Our goal is to ensure that Subversion and CollabNet users
have access to a fully featured open source Subversion plugin for MSVS.

You can't use any of the existing open source stuff for this?

I do not know if it will meet your requirements, but HTML-Kit Tools might. If not, check out the hundreds of plugins for it. They might fill the gap. I have used HTML-Kit and find it a very worth application.

Maybe you could make a subforum or a sticky thread for this there? Not sure what's best.

If you want source control integrated with a bug tracker that is simple, Subversion and Trac are about as simple as it gets. There are plenty of commercial solutions that integrate source control with bug tracking but I haven't used any of them.
