Maybe I am missing something, but this doesn't seem too expensive to me for everything it does.  Adobe Acrobat costs MUCH more and does less from what I see and hear.  If you need Acrobat, this may well be the best thing going...

Just out of curiosity, how does the standard version compare to the Professional?  What additional items does Pro offer, or haven't you tested that one?

DesktopCoral / Another Application issue
« Last post by steeladept on May 22, 2009, 01:17 PM »
Maybe it is because of what I am trying to do, but this doesn't seem to work right - at least not like I want it to :P

I have a windowed program that I want to essentially always keep visible, but without everything else going over it when I go full screen (actually 2 programs).  However, when I use DesktopCoral, it just moves them over so everything on the desktop shows, but not what I wanted.  I tried following the instructions and even searched the forum for similar issues, but everyone with similar issues are talking about widgets, not program windows.

For what it is worth, I tried using GridMove first.  That sets everything up perfect, but if I open another program and/or maximize a program, it sits over these two gridded programs.  I want the grids reserved and one of the posts under GridMove suggested this program.  A) Can this do what I want?  B) If so, what am I doing wrong to make the program window stay in position?

JGPaiva's GridMove and Ahk Tools / Re: GridMove: Grids Here
« Last post by steeladept on May 22, 2009, 12:40 PM »
Well after looking at these, mine seems a little simplistic.  It is just a modification of the 3-Part Reverse included, hense the new name Offset 3-Part Reverse.  The only real difference is the two target sites on the right side are not equal in size.  This is nice for me so I can have my buddy list in the larger lower grid, while my monitoring program is in the smaller upper grid.  I since found I will likely use desktop corral for this instead (since I always want those programs on top), but since it was already created, here you go...

Okay, I have to take the other side of this given that I (now used to) work IT in a large corp. that does these audits.  There are a plethora of reasons provided, many of which people at various levels consider stupid.  As it goes down the chain, many get left off until only the stupidest reasons or made up reasons the on-site tech could figure out are the only reasons provided.  In reality, there are MANY good reasons, and many of the apparently stupid reasons have good reasons behind them that are never explained.  At my company, these are the main reasons (NOTE:  Were applicable, this is related to U.S. laws and regulations.  YMMV):

     1)  Standardization - this makes everything easier from the technical side, from setup, through troubleshooting, to transferability and upgrading.
     2)  Repair - associated to standardization is the troubleshooting and repair of PC's.  If the problem is a software conflict with authorized software, it can be documented, tracked, and fixed.  If it is from unauthorized software, it costs a lot of time and money to track down issues that never should have occurred in the first place.***
     3)  Auditing - a company is required, many times by law (and often times by customers) and policy to know everything that is installed on each machine.  While this seems ludicrous for a company with 50,000 PC's, it never the less is a requirement.
     4)  Security - since it has not been reviewed and authorized, it is not considered secured software with the associated liability trails if the software causes a security breach.
     5)  Liability - This is perhaps the most important one as many people don't respect licenses or intellectual property.  For example MANY people in my company would download shareware that states specifically for personal use only.  They would justify that they are the only one using it, even though it was obviously not for their benefit.  Instead the company would be liable for profits gained through the use of the software as well as fines, legal fees, etc.

***Note:  In my company they actually considered charging back this associated cost to the end user if this was found to be the cause.  However, they found that to be essentially unenforceable in our current setup so charged back to the department instead.   Sometimes that worked, sometimes not so much.

There may be other good reasons as well, but these 5 just are off the top of my head.  I found the best workaround for me and our company is using portable apps.  If you use them, they can not be traced unless caught while using them, since they are not installed.  Even so, this can open the company to the liability and security issues listed above.

The right way to accomplish this is to get a hold of the head of IT and show them the software.  Give them the developer or company name and encourage them to talk so that they get what essentially amounts to a corporate or site license and add it to the image.  Many of these guys are not even true IT professionals, but rather management professionals anyway, so they are often easier to convince.  Once they see the value (especially if the cost is free), they will dictate that it should be available unless there is a technical reason for it not to (incompatibility seems to be the one noncontroversial excuse, the rest tend to be a fight over who has most control).

I don't know if you are using Firefox or not, but if so, I found the Unplug extension seems to work for most things.  I believe there is some software around here somewhere (URL Snooper) that should work as well, though I have never used it.

General Software Discussion / Re: The Best Of: text editors
« Last post by steeladept on April 28, 2009, 12:30 PM »
Regarding TextPad...
- No folding, no rectangular selection, no indentation guides or nesting indicators
This is not quite true if I understand it correctly.  The No folding is true, but the no rectangular selection is clearly wrong (though it doesn't necessarily make sense where it is).  Cntrl +Q,B is the hotkey for Block Select (it is also listed under Configure menu item).  Though there are no guides per se for the indentation, it can be set by the user to any set number of characters and it repeats (no differential indention depending on level unfortunately, but then you might want to use OOo or Word for that complex a document anyway  ;) ).  Lastly nesting indicator - um, don't know what that is so no comment.

Hope that helps you with some of the bad there.  You certainly nailed all it's other weak points that I see (and some I didn't).

Thanks for the heads-up.

I read that already, but I am still confused.  Is it a media player or just a software volume controller?  If it is the controller like I thought, what is the point of skins et. al.?

Not that I expected it to from your fixed bugs list, but that didn't help the working across the network problem I had - in case you were wondering.  :D

Me either.  I have RealWorld Icon Editor that I got during one of the contests that I use on occasion.  It is good, though I am no artist so mine are very good at all.  I don't take enough time I guess.  The software quality is good though.  I will check this one out and maybe buy it if it covers all I do with photoshop (a very old version, but I can't justify upgrading for the relatively simple tasks I do).

Maybe I don't see it, but QTTab seems to only work within Explorer, am I right?  Is there anything that would work just hovering over the folder, even if not in explorer?

Maybe I am missing something, but can't this be accomplished by just editing the permissions to prevent deletion?

Nah, not difficult.  Grab the latest build (see my sig); it should do gapless looping now.

Cool addition...

Nice Wraith - just put in to be added now...

Just a thought though - if we are to control it, shouldn't there be a way to cross reference members?  I noticed when I added myself to the group, there was nothing requesting a wait or anything.  This was the main reason I didn't make the group myself.  I don't know how we should administer that part of it.  Thoughts?

My only question is where is the plush coin he should be carrying?
592
Instead of powering off, try just logging off then back in. That should provide the equivalent I believe.  Perhaps it would be possible to just add a manual rescan button to go through those steps for you?  I am assuming, of course, that this is not a new location, but an old one you are going back to.  Just a thought.  I really ought to give this a try before I continue to comment  ;D

Screenshot Captor / Re: How to capture a DOS screen with Screenshot Captor
« Last post by steeladept on April 23, 2009, 01:05 AM »
I think what mouser meant was (correct me if I am wrong) run DOS and the program within VirtualBox and run the screencapture program within WindowsXP.  You then capture the VirtualBox window (which contains the DOS screen you want) within XP.

Living Room / Re: The Desktop fight you've all been waiting for...

Agreed on all fronts.  I too prefer XFCE for what I have seen, though I am intrigued by LXDE.  Wonder if they will do a round-robin of all these desktops.  Most interestingly to me would be a true roundup sans 3rd party programs.  Too many complaints how OOo does not compare to KOffice because OOo is not part of GNOME.  That is unrealistic in the above article, in my opinion, because being part of it and being the default is not the same.  OOo IS the default office for GNOME regardless if it comes with it or not.  KOffice IS the default office regardless if OOo is there or not (until the user switches).  These are why the article was correct despite the nay-sayers.  That said, any distribution could change the default before it is sent out, so a true roundup would be sans 3rd party.  Or put the 3rd party on all of them for speed comparisons, et. al.

Enough of my rambling...

Maybe this is one of the "huge" applications you spoke of, but doesn't Sony's Acid Music do what you are looking for?  I believe it was/is free, but even if not, it is not that expensive.
I've heard of it, but never looked into it.  Yes, that would probably be one of the huge applications.  Still, it's worth a look.  Definitely not free though!

Sorry, haven't really played with it since version 3.  There is a free one that is called Acid Xpress, though it has many limits.  Acid Music Studio is there as well, with fewer restricitions for ~$60 retail, but the full Pro version is going to set you back a lot.  As I recall, however, it wasn't "heavy" and with what you do with music, it may well be worth the ~$60.  Just a thought.  What I found nice was the loops were already available, most of them royalty free.  Here is where you can get the free version.

I see.  Well my idea would not require a CRM solution, but if you want that, I can see where that would be a significant problem.  I don't know that I could help you beyond putting you in touch with my friend who does the dynamic sites.  He may well have a junior programmer at his company that may cost less.

BTW - if it does become a fully customized site, perhaps the best way would be to create the site and put the text in dynamically via a text file tied to certain fields.  Kinda like CSS, but for the specific content?  Just a thought.  Maybe that is how the CRM systems work, I don't know.

Hey. My name is Amanda. I don't do any programming or anything but I love programs. I try everything once just to see how it works. If I like it I keep it, you know. Well, I am looking for a program that when I hover the mouse over a folder, it will pop up and display the names of the files in the folder. Kinda like how filenote works with a text file but for a folder. I have searched high and low for one on the net and I haven't found one yet. I don't usually interact much with any of the sites I'm a member of, so if anyone could create this and email me it would be fabulous. THANKS. Amanda miracle(underscore)mandi(at)yahoo(dotcom).

Hi Amanda and welcome.  Just from your first couple sentences I can see you have found a home here if you decide to stay with us.  ***Let you in on a secret - I think there are more of us then there are of them programmer types   ;)***  As for your request, I think that would be a great idea for a program, and hopefully not very difficult.  I just hope you stick around after it is made instead of just asking for the email and leaving us like all the other girls do :P  Just kidding, but I do hope you stick around and find the site useful.

I am not sure what you mean by strings and such, but what I meant is instead of having 6 static pages that you run through a translation engine, you create 18 pages for the three different languages.  A different page for each language with the same content.  Then perhaps a home page with a selector.  It is certainly not very efficient, but if it is critical that each word, sentence, etc. is exactly correct, that is the only way I know of to be sure.
599
True, but what web designer wouldn't want to have UN in their client portfolio? It's probably customized to no end.
Perhaps, but once it is customized, why not make it available to all - unless it is customized by the UN, in which case why go with Joomla (or any other content management) since they must customize & verify each site by hand?  No, I think they (the UN) probably use the same engine or something very close to the original.

I completely agree it should be possible to have a multilingual site in Joomla. It's just that this is a make-or-break issue for this particular site, since a technically faulty or incomplete localization will reflect badly on a company that offers just such services.
If it is that critical (and I agree it is), I would suggest considering not using the multi-lingual translators and actually make three different pages yourself.  To make it easier, you may wish to use the translator to translate the bulk of it, copy it in to the new page, and have your wife fix any issues.

On idea may be to create a group on the various social sites.  LinkedIn is geared toward professional-type relationships.  Maybe that would be a good start?  It isn't truly a talent service as envisioned, but it might be a good start?
