General Software Discussion / Re: Data recovery software suggestions?
« Last post by Curt on June 05, 2008, 10:57 AM »
GetDataBack has a very good reputation: http://www.runtime.org/

I am getting even more interested in this GetDataBack because of this new feature they added via the free HDHost:

HDHost
Recover files over your local network or even over the Internet

HDHost enables you to run the GetDataBack on one computer ("remote") while accessing the drives of another computer ("host").

The "remote" computer runs GetDataBack, the "host" computer runs HDHost.

If there is no way to attach the drive to a working computer (e.g. a laptop hard drive) you can run HdHost from a WinPE boot CD-Rom. The benefit is you do not need to install any software on the system or drive you want to recover from.

You can run GetDataBack (too) from a WinPE boot CD-ROM.

GetDataBack for NTFS is $79, and for FAT it is $69 - GetDataBack supports Unicode.

Note: We recommend that you download the demo version of GetDataBack first to see if your files are recoverable. The demo version allows you to perform the data recovery and to see and verify your recovered files.

A license key is then required to actually save these files. Once you have a license key for the software, you don't have to run the program again, just enter the license key in the demo version to enable the copy function.
- even more thumbs up!

Couldn't wait for your answer so I bought it anyway.

... I keep spending my money on software that I don't really use enough to justify the expense. FileBoss is a case in point -

- I know what you mean. Why would I even want yet another file manager? I love my (amplified) Explorer!

I was puzzled when I re-read this post just now: What did I purchase? Oh, FileBoss!! I am embarrassed to admit that I haven't used it since the purchase, not even once!   :-[
I guess my final comment in the quote is adequate: I love my (amplified) Explorer!  :-*

General Software Discussion / Activate 'Terminate Services' ???
« Last post by Curt on June 05, 2008, 09:35 AM »
I am trying to install the new Windows Search 4 but the installation gets aborted and this strange message comes up: Make sure 'Terminate Services' is activated / allowed (or how the English terms would go). Now, of course I never knew that such a feature could be de-activated in the first place, but the world must know by now that I have absolutely no idea on how to solve this problem, if possible. What can you tell me about this? Services and processes are being terminated all the time, so I guess it really may be some other problem and the XP system perhaps just gave "some" message because it didn't know any better? Do you have an idea, please?

 :tellme:

Edited: Wrong first titel; "services", not "processes".

- yes, their policies are tuff. Also, I was disappointed not to see any real new development from version 6 to 7 even though the upgrade price was $52 (incl the $7 insurrance and VAT). Babylon is fine by itself, but it's biggest advantage is the possible use of add-on dictionaries - I have quite a number. Some of them were expensive, but most were free. Together they allow Babylon to answer almost any question faster than any other I have tried.

Despite of all this, I believe my next program in the field of stand-alone dictionaries will be the PRO version of WordWeb, though it can easily / will be much more expensive than Babylon.

So, now that it has been half a year since my purchase of Babylon 7 I am merely a modest fan.

FindOnClick really is impressively fast.

My problems with the program were: 1) that it is not "integrated" with Explorer other than in the context menu. In most cases my search via GTSearch or QT will have ended before FindOnClick even have begun to search, because these apps are genuinely INTEGRATED. This is of course only a concern if the user already is inside Explorer.  2) FindOnClick can set a shortcut to the search you have performed. Nice. But a) you will have to name the link yourself if you are going to have more than one of the kind, and b) it is not a link to the result of the search but to a new search for the same criteria, (some non-sense deleted). 3) It is not FindOnClick but FindOnDoubleclick 4) It is $30  Edited: seems to be $30 including: EncryptOnClick + DeleteOnClick + UndeleteOnClick + HashOnClick + PatchOnClick + ScrambleOnClick   which all seems very cheap (read: "cheap" as in a fine deal, not as in cheap crap), but I don't think I want any of them.

But other than this it really is both fast and 'nice'.

Edited:

5) During un-install I was asked this question I really hate to get:
>Remove shared file?

Also, the shortcut in Quick Launch was left behind.

- or, if you read German: SoftwareOK FingerWeg

    FingerWeg 1.33    Description: DEUTSCH
Update: 17.02.2008
FingerWeg.png

Ah, you are in luck, the article (with clear instructions and pictures) is still there:
http://www.informati...?articleID=189400897

I was not all comfortable with the small pictures in the otherwise fine instructive article - ("I cannot see which important line the author is referring too, because the pic is too small!") - so I made a version with larger images (and less text) as a supplement. I guess the text in the images shows that the file has been compressed a little too much - sorry:

they should put more buttons on the other side of the mouse.

I want to try such a thing, like this $60 one, but the prices in Denmark are double up...

Thanks, PhilB66, for the informative wiki link.

However, I fail to see what the 9 kb invalid rar container has to do with all this.
Surely, you don't mean to tell me that 2.2 MB can be copied into 9 KB?

@ Curt:
Indeed, it is a shame you don't have a XP installation CD.

Ah, you are in luck, the article (with clear instructions and pictures) is still there:

Thanks for the sympathy, Shades, and for the link.
Can anyone guess why I had to use IE7 to open the link? Firefox only gave me a blank page!

... the most recent review - UltimateDefrag 2008 Debate: I, which confirms earlier findings.

All about files bigger than 4 GB!
Who have files at such a ridiculous size?
Well, let him choose another program!

You obviously love to hate my new program -
I will tell you later on if I love or hate it, and why.
5668
I still don't know what you are implying about rapidlinks. What is a crack and what is it supposed to do? I have just now clicked 'download' and twice followed the never-ending redirections and both times ended up downloading a 9 kb invalid rar container file - is that a 'crack' ? Of course, I couldn't see what was inside the invalid container, but the original file is 2.44 MB. The link may of course be removed, I don't want to offend the forum with something of no importance at all, but I just don't fully know what you are talking about. And I guess a lot of other innocent people don't know either.

5669
I have several defraggers, but I WANTED this.  ;)

I merely linked to a fine article. I don't know what else may be going on at rapidlinks.
5670
That was all back then. Now they seem to have learned a lesson; the old PDF in question has been removed, and the new is free of charge. I would say their UltimateDefrag 2008 is a fine piece of work, so I am purchasing it NOW, and then we'll see Sunday if the 25% discount offer is still valid, even it says "until 31 May 2008".

UltimateDefrag is probably the closest program yet reviewed to being the "ultimate" defrag software, particularly if you're a power user. It gets a "Thumbs Up" rating in spite of its flaws.

Living Room / Re: $7.5 to optimize XP NTFS Drive access : rip-off or not ?

- yes, Carol, you're right: A couple of years ago I NTFS-compressed some 20 GB of MP3 files, but saved merely 300 MB space, and saw no increase in speed. Also, later on I forgot to de-compress before the drive ran out of available space...

One might say he doesn't update too often, I guess. He is bound to know that it doesn't work flawlessly, and yet it hasn't been updated for half a year. But you are of course right, Darwin, we should talk about how the beatle handles  -  only, I haven't tested it... because of the quoted warning!

I have re-edited the first post and added this quote:

BEATLE v1.0 Beta 1, Build #1273 Released
HOT OFF THE PRESS!! BEATLE v1.0, Build #1273 Beta 1 is now available for download. The original version of BEATLE will be maintained for the time being, but all development on the project has been stopped. There is too much to say about what’s been changed in the new BEATLE, but all I will say is this: EVERTHING!!

Please remember that this release is for testing purposes only and should not be used as your default media player. You will also notice that some features are missing or some are not working. Please don’t worry as they will be ready for the final release.

Enjoy

They have improved a lot on Jing's speed, and added two new buttons:

One (button) saves your image or video to any location you choose. The other (button) copies your whole image (not just the URL) to the clipboard so you can paste it into an email...or wherever you want it.

Watch their video, What's new in Jing 1.6?".

Maybe it would be a good idea to give him a premium membership to Gizmo's ?  ;)

Some say ImgBurn, others CDBurnerXP, but *IIRC* the latter doesn't handle videos. Maybe DVD Flick is okay? I assume it is, because it comes from the sourceforge community, but I don't know. But go and check http://www.techsuppo...burning-software.htm when you have become a premium member... sorry, but I am logged in', so all I can give you right now is the main link: www.techsupportalert.com/

Edit 1:
- I should specify that I don't burn videos, so I don't *know* anything about this subject.

Edit 2:
Google "burn video to dvd", first answer:
Hack Attack: Burn almost any video file to a playable DVD
-lifehacker

- and the third answer:
