Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Email Attachments Browser
« Last post by Carol Haynes on June 30, 2006, 03:26 AM »
For outlook and outlook express you can use X1 (free Enterprise Desktop Edition now at www.X1.com). You can use wildcards with extensions, eg. *.mov to list all email attachments which are QuickTime movies, or leave the search field blank to list all attachments by name. You can even preview the contents . I'm not sure which formats are supported - but certainly WM formats for audio are supported - so probably WM video too at least.

One of the nice things with X1 if you use Outlook is that if you keep archives of email over years you cand add those archive PST files to the X1 Outlook profile - so you can find stuff in all your email - not just the stuff currently loaded into Outlook - which is great because it can really encourage you to keep a minimum size active PST file.

The only drawback I have found with X1 is that Outllok seems to be less responsive - whether that is because X1 is trying to access the files at the same time as Outlook for indexing I don't know.

Here is a screenshot (using a JPG file in an archived Outlook email) :

You want to try working when every button on your desktop (and I mean every button - scroll bars, scroll up/down, up/down keys, open menus, close menus, pressing enter, mouse select, mouse drag, minimise, maximise etc) each had its own little (or not so little) theme tune - all of them irritating at the best of times ...

I had a rather computer illiterate colleague in the days when I managed computer systems (technically he was my boss). He had a Mac in his office (in the days when they looked like a box) and I crept in a set all the default sounds to really annoying things and long musical items (like the Looney Toons theme) so that when he clicked a key or moved the mouse all hell broke loose.

He never did work out how to disable the noises (or who had rigged his machine) and had to come begging to me to put things back to normal. Childish, yes, but he was paid a lot more than me and I did all the troubleshooting!

I don't think useage is anonymous, so any nefarious activity should be traceable to the real culprit - I don't know any more than what was in the article. I just thought it was an interesting approach.

Bookmark buddy does the job for me though I'm not sure how portable it is. You can also keep separate book mark sets which can be useful.

http://www.bookmarkbuddy.net/

also ...

22 June 2006: Bookmark Buddy Reader Edition v3.5.4 Follow linkreleased. This edition allows you to open, decrypt, search and export bookmark lists. It does not require installation or registration: the program files can be copied to any device or folder and run from there. You can therefore run Bookmark Buddy from a USB memory stick, MP3 player or floppy disk. This edition does not allow you to import bookmark collections nor edit bookmark lists.

50 Indispensable Microsoft Word tips
Looking for a list of Microsoft Word tips and tricks for your end users? The editors at TechRepublic have put together a collection of their favorite timesavers for using Word 97, 2000, 2002 (Office XP), and 2003. Even the most experienced users will benefit from this list, which contains tips on recording Word macros, selecting noncontiguous text, using AutoCorrect to expand text, defining styles, creating document shortcuts, and much more.

You will need to sign up to TechRepublic to access this but I do find their newsletters (which you can opt out of) very useful.

See article here: http://downloads.tec...138-1035-729220.html

It may be my combination of popup blockers etc. but I couldn't downlload the PDF file in Firefox - I had to use Internet Explorer.

Social networking of a different sort, from Fon
Posted by: Rafe Needleman

Hey, buddy, wanna buy a cheap wireless router? Head over to Fon and nab the Linksys WRT54GLs they're selling for just $5. Is there a catch? Sure, there's a catch. But it's not a bad deal all the same.

Fon is a growing network of people who use Wi-Fi to share their broadband connections. If you join the network and put your connection on the network, any other Fon member can use your Wi-Fi, and you can use theirs, too, free of charge. And that's where the cheapo routers come in: You need special firmware in your networking equipment. You can download the code from Fon and install it on your router, or you can buy a router with Fon preinstalled, direct from Fon. There will be 1 million cheap routers available as part of a big push the company is launching today to grow its global network.

Is there any other kind in recent remakes? Let's start a hit list of 'must not sees' ...

Here are a few of my pet hate remakes:

Bilko (Phil Silvers was an impossible act to follow)
Pink Panther (ditto Peter Sellers - I still can't work out why they did that)
Hitchhikers Guide (OK it wasn't a film remake but DNA would be rolling in his grave)
The Italian Job
The Singing Detective
Get Carter

The only  one I quite liked in recent years was Oceans Eleven, but then I've never seen the original. (Oceans 12 I thought was rubbish by comparison).

One way to alienate people ...
5665
Hey - nice to see you appealing to teenage men ... good on yer girl!
5666
How about an automated RSS feed that aggregates recent posts from all the blogs (in one feed)?
5667
I think it is a fun idea - personal blogs could be an addition link on the forum user profile (and a prominent button under the user id on the left). It would certainly add a nice human element to the site and a chance for people to really get to know each other.

Would you basically expect content to be restricted DC relevant content (all things software ... within reason) or would they be open to anything that people want to write about (so long as it isn't political or potentially offensive)?
5668
An issue I have found is that it doesn't subscribe to RSS feeds from DonationCoder. I suspect that is because the links used are accessed via PHP, it doesn't seem to have probs with direct .XML links.
5669
Only niggle is that it is a bit slow at times, but that could be for other reasons or maybe just because it is in beta and needs some optimization. Feels very like working in Outlook Express on the web.

One weird thing (which I am sure will be changed) is that when you click on to Options you go back to the old interface to set them ...
5670
Fair enough I wasn't implying anything about your parents - just thought it was worth noting in case others got ideas ;)
5671
"Windows Network Connection" will show you if there are any wireless networks available where you are. Just right click on the little connection icon in the system tray and choose "Show Available Wireless Networks".

(By the way I'm pretty sure it is illegal to connect via a wireless network without the owners knowledge and permission.)

The strange thing is that it seems to give a 30-70 to 40-60 split for most sites even when the sites are obviously very specific - and its age range seems very random.

How on earth can it tell from 'site visits' the age of the visitors??

Here are a couple of exmples of very 'female' sites - with an interested male minority (and interesting age range of client):

http://www.needlewoman.co.uk/  Female Oriented 61% 25~34
http://www.menopausematters.co.uk/ Female Oriented 72% 25~34

I can't think of any 24 year old likely to be thinking about menopause !!! And why are 28% of young men interested?

Oh, and by the way Yahoo is 92% female ...
5674
The new Yahoo email (Beta) looks quite good to use. It has tabbed browing for reading and jumping between emails, spam filtering (hopefully they are working to improve this) plus an RSS feed reader. Here are a couple of images:

Email:

RSS:

The panes resize as you change the shape of the window and it seems to work fine in IE and Firefox.

You can also drag and drop email around your folders.
