What's the Best? / Re: Anti-Virus Package
« Last post by lanux128 on December 04, 2006, 10:49 PM »
like tomos, with much trepidation i had installed "Active Virus Shield" on my spare computer.

so far, it hasn't caused any problems or conflicts. and slowly, i'm beginning to think that since this AOL program is based on Kaspersky Lab's av engine, there shouldn't be any hanky-panky for Kaspersky Lab have a reputation to maintain.. anyway, if things stay the way they are, this AV can be a good contender in the freeware category..

but then again, i'd like to hear about any misgivings other users had with this program..

btw, using the hotkey "Ctrl+Alt+Shift+H" the main window appears behind all other programs.. i kinda prefer it prefer to appear focused.. ;)

since tchikien is busy with the program, i'll put a small explanation. i think, the program's quite intuitive.
1st you have to specify the output folder (Fig. 1).

Fig. 1
Teleport-new2.png

then leave the program running. when you drop a file onto your desktop, a message will appear (Fig. 2) prompting if you want to save a note as well. click 'don't save note' to continue without saving a note.

Teleport-new5.png

btw, the prompt to write a note can also be disabled. (Fig. 3)

there's a tip at www.annoyances.org, why don't you try that?

Problem:
Running XP SP2 or higher, you try to run an executable located on another machine
on your network. Your accosted with a prompt: "The publisher could not be verified".
You are forced to confirm that you wish to run this program... every time you run
it.

Solution:
Run gpedit.msc

Go to User Configuration >> Administrative Templates >> Windows Components >> Attachment
Manager

Add "*.exe" to the "Inclusion list for moderate risk file types" setting.

"This policy setting allows you to configure the list of moderate risk file types.
If the attachment is in the list of moderate risk file types and is from the restricted
or Internet zone, Windows prompts the user before accessing the file. ..."

i'll pm my email address. you can also reach me at yahoo's im plus dc's irc channel..

as the 1st question, i'd prefer to run on my PC but it's ok if you want to make it web-enabled. in that way, the output can be posted on a website.

i think this kind of list will come in handy if you're in a hurry & need to identify a tool to do a particular task..
because most probably there's only one tool available. in any case, the list does contain alternatives for selected categories..

also, check out its sister site: Open Source Freeware : 400+ free applications and utilities.
