It is a little disappointing that they don't tell if you will get your money back if you purchase the program now when it is still discounted, or if you merely get a second license - if you win. Because if you don't win and you didn't purchase (because you were hoping to win), then you *officially* only have the full price option left to get the 2008 version, and then the competition really was kind of a trick, wasn't it.

Anyway, Raymond/PhilB66/czechboy have given us a way to get it for free.

Hmm... It is a little strange that you already can have the 2008 burner this way, because I pre-purchased it some weeks ago and am still waiting for the link to the final and official version - due in two weeks time from now.

Anyway, the 2008 burner is *ALMOST* the only new program on Raymond's list (not really, but some are already freeware versions or even abandoned), but the 2008 burner is certainly worth this price!

Can you explain why anyone would want to not have the right-click menu?
I use it all the time and cannot understand not having it should be a feature!

However, it is impressive if it really is much faster than the really fast predecessor!

General Software Discussion / Harvest the Web with OutWit (Firefox)

For Firefox only, and still in first beta:
http://www.outwit.com/ or
http://www.snapfiles...utwitcom/outwit.html
- or log in to get it from Mozilla at https://addons.mozil...S/firefox/addon/7271

Harvest the web

If you desperately need...
- a list of all the design studios in London,
- your dream job ads in an Excel file every day,
- hundreds of photos of your favorite movie star,
- all available PDF files about Semantic P2P...

And if you are tired of scrolling down Web
pages, scanning text and compulsively
clicking, cutting and pasting for hours:
Here is the first beta release of
OutWit Hub, your Web Collection Engine.
http://www.outwit.com/

Our mission is to provide the Web community with a simple Web automation environment (finally) allowing everyone to harvest data elements, documents or media from virtually any public (and legal) source of content. The technology is open and will eventually provide an API and wizards to build simple and efficient tools.

The OutWit Platform is composed of a kernel that contains a large library of data recognition and extraction functions, around which an unlimited number of original extensions —called outfits— can be developed, using the kernel's features for specific applications.

An outfit is a small extension with its own user interface, features, scripts and directory of Web sources. Some outfits will be developed by us, but most, hopefully, will be developed by our users who have a specific need or passion.

Our first outfit, OutWit Hub, is a multi-purpose development & showcase application, in which we have gathered the largest possible number of features, hoping to cover a large spectrum of needs. The Hub will keep evolving and should become a very useful tool for advanced users. However, the real objective of this technology is to build simple, straight-to-the-point applications:

   1. a simple tool to collect images
   2. a simple tool to find a job
   3. a simple tool to follow the news in handball
   4. a simple tool to ... (this is why we will never succeed without you.)

At this point, the applications are countless; only you can steer us in the right direction(s).

The OutWit team, May 2008

It is my (poor) understanding that WordWeb itself is English > English only - I want it for the (expensive) crossword compiling extra parts which supports several languages. For translating several languages Babylon is still among the best, I think. Your comment on the OCR has never been an item for me - yes, it will mark the "s and such, but the translation itself is okay. Maybe you tried an older version? The present is #7.

WordWeb is available as a powerful Pro version and a cut down free version. The free version is used by millions of people from all over the world, many of whom may not be able to afford a commercial dictionary. WordWeb Pro was originally just an add on for Crossword Compiler - the world's best puzzle maker since 1993. However it has since grown in a strong stand-alone product, regularly updated with new words and senses.

The WordWeb database is based on Princeton's WordNet project, however there are many thousands of corrections and additions to this base. The WordWeb database is also internationalized, and has information about pronunciations, derived forms, and numerous other features.

The WordWeb data is also available as an online dictionary, and as a set of tools for developers.

General Software Discussion / Re: Software to change tooltip settings in XP?
« Last post by Curt on June 07, 2008, 05:54 PM »
My problem is not the tooltips but the All Programs' roll-down menu:

At first they look all right:

1.gif

But when I right-click a link the bottoms of both the All Programs' menus and of the right-click context menu will at once hide behind the taskbar:

2.gif

I have not found any trick to repair this error. I don't think it is a bug, but may very well be caused by my unstable XP. The problem will occur no matter if I use Mmm+ or not. I have of course tried several times to "sort by names", and run ToolTipFix, but so far to no good.

Do 'you' know of any trick to help this out?

General Software Discussion / Windows System Restore with a single click
« Last post by Curt on June 07, 2008, 10:32 AM »
IF you are among those lucky people who can actually benefit from using XP's system restore, then this little piece of freeware will be right for you:  Easy HR Windows XP System Restore Point Creator

Easy HR Windows XP System Restore Point Creator

Easily create windows restore points. Options for a quick create or you can add your own description. Create a Windsows XP System restore point with a single click.

    * Tested on Windows XP SP2.

    * Registration not required. This application is freeware.

- "Download Easy HR Computer Uptime" is a silly typo, the file is the proper "SetRestore.exe"

I am happy for you, 4WD, and I wish my XP machine was optimised too. However, it is not, not even optimized. Yes, I enjoy watching Top Gear, but I am aware that they are referring to themselves, and are always being spoken of by others, as boys, never as men. Of course the Jag went faster, but it was no longer a limousine (it never was, but you know what I mean).

Did any of you guys try the new Windows Search 4 package?  :tellme:

General Software Discussion / Re: Activate 'Terminate Services' ???
« Last post by Curt on June 07, 2008, 02:50 AM »
--oh! Studying the text closer makes me realize that it doesn't *come* with Desktop Search, but will (try to) *upgrade* Desktop Search! Now I wonder if this makes a difference? Hmm.. Maybe I should first go and (re-)install Desktop Search??? I am not too sure what it all means, but I think I will try just that. Edited: No, forget all about it; I am a happy user of QT Tabbar and GTSearch - I don't even want to use Windows Search or Desktop Search!

Upgrade or fresh install? Hmm... When I first was to post my answer I suddenly felt a need to check the facts. These surprised me somewhat because I had forgotten that I don't have Windows Desktop Search on this machine as I believed I had; it was on my previous one! However, that should not be not important. My answer must be that it is both an upgrade and a fresh install, because I expect that everyone has Windows Search (??)- it was not listed in Add/Remove Programs - so this part must be an upgrade (??), but I don't have Windows Desktop Search, so this part is a fresh install, (or is it a re-install??).

Description of Windows Search 4.0 and the Multilingual User Interface Pack for Windows Search 4.0

Article ID   :   940157
Last Review   :   June 3, 2008
Revision   :   6.1

INTRODUCTION
This article discusses the availability of Windows Search 4.0 and the Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI) for Windows Search 4.0.

Windows Search 4.0 lets you perform an instant search of your computer. Windows Search 4.0 helps you find and preview documents, e-mail messages, music files, photos, and other items on the computer.

The search engine in Windows Search 4.0 is a Microsoft Windows service that is also used by programs such as Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and Microsoft Office OneNote 2007. You can use this search engine to index a program's content and to obtain instant results when you search in a particular program.

Windows Search 4.0 packages include the following:

•   The Group Policy template (Search.adm or Search.admx /l) for managing Group Policy objects that span multiple versions of Windows Desktop Search and Windows Search
•   The Add-in for Files on Microsoft Networks for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 packages

This add-in is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
918996 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918996/) Availability of the Windows Desktop Search add-in for Files on Microsoft Networks

This add-in lets Windows Search index redirected "My Documents" folders. This add-in also lets Windows Search index shared items on remote networks. By default, this add-in is included for supported 32-bit operating systems.

When you install the Windows Search 4.0 packages, you also install the following items:

•   XmlLite
For more information about XmlLite, click the following article numbers to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

- surely, I did   and who knows, maybe some day he will get to it. Actually, I told about the situation and merely asked if he will add the feature "show hidden folders".
5647
- yes, the double killer seems to be fine, but from the text I would say one would need the pro version,  €15 ~ $20 which also seems to be version you have, darwin?

FastStone Image Resizer is fine but has one strange weakness: it will not show hidden folders even when they are 'unhidden' and every other program that I have can see them.
5649
I was a happy 1-Click Answer (Alt+RightClick) user for several years before I switched to Babylon. It also comes as an add-on merely for Firefox. Free, and also for Linux.
5650
EDIT: Please note I run an optimised version of XP -

- you don't seem to have the same conception of the word "optimized" as I have. Programs that run perfectly well on other machines will not run on yours, is not quite telling it is 'optimized'. We do not all have the same meaning on this or that, but in general I would say that people who are buying a limousine are not expected to see how much they can remove from the car, are they. If they want the vehicle to move faster they don't usually rip off and throw out the seats, but are more tending to tune up the engine...
