The look of the site should be much improved, and much more responsive for mobile users, etc.  And some of the functionality should be substantially improved (search functions, etc.)

BUT, much like the forum upgrade -- it needs to be emphasized that the biggest benefits are in terms of future maintenance and extensibility of the site.  The current site is basically just a huge collection of hand-written static pages (something that wasn't so outlandish back in 2005 when the site was started, but which is now certifiably insane).

So this upgrade will bring the site into the modern era and make it much more enjoyable to maintain, update, and add new content, and ensure that we can keep going for another 10 years.

It's exciting!

But yeah, if anybody wants updates, wants to offer up a feature suggestion - or other questions about the CMS, feel free to ask and one of us will update as often as we can!

Yes, except for the fact that it's taking all of our concentration to focus on migrating the current pages, so please refrain from deep discussions about big new features and content until we get the old content migrated.

DC Website Help and Extras / Official CMS Migration Progress Thread - September 2017
« Last post by mouser on September 03, 2015, 11:19 AM »
We're on a roll and fueled by all of the generous donations at the last fundraiser!

This thread will be used for discussing our official migration to a proper CMS.

This is a big job, but DC member Stephen66515 and I are working hard on it now without distraction since the  forum upgrade was completed.

We've actually finished the most difficult parts, and it looks awesome.  There's just a ton of work left converting pages.

This thread will be used for discussing and previewing progress while we work on it.

I think there is a tendency that "craftsmen" feel strongly about their tools. Programmers spend a lot of their time looking at code, so seemingly small differences in editors, fonts, and coding style, appear important to them.

I think you are onto something here but i think it goes a bit deeper than that.. Part of the dna of being a "craftsman/maker/etc" seems to be a desire -- a compulsion -- to try building the things we use.  Often this leads to incredibly huge inefficient illogical wastes of time, like a reinventing the wheel and building something that we should just have let someone else build.  There is some real pleasure and learning that comes out of it -- but often it feels like a compulsion that one simply gives in to in order to get the idea out of your head.  :P

Any opinions on this?  Looking at DC's certificate, I think I also see SHA-256 so may be it's not a problem.

We are currently working to convert all of the website pages to a cms system, and then the plan is to move to a new server -- where we will make sure to upgrade the ssl certificates, etc.
Since that will all hopefully happen in the next couple of months, I think we are ok with what we have until then.

Personally, I think the Custom Options section should be moved under Look and Layout since that's what those options are affecting.

good idea, will do.

Sometimes files get partially downloaded and then the browser will keep insisting its downloaded if you try again -- the only solution being trying a different web browser.  Maybe try re-downloading using a dif browser?

i've never seen it before and have farr running on an upgraded win10 with no issues.

FARR will, without a doubt, run fine on windows 10.

can you generate an md5 or other checksum for the download so we can make sure its the full download (or report filesize)? have you tried the portable version?

by the time Greasemonkey gets to remove the related nodes, it may be "too late" in the sense that one's info might have leaked to certain sites.

well that could certainly be true for the social media buttons and google analytics code -- that's why i added an option for that.

I've tweaked the search function a little bit -- I think i fixed a bug where it was returning less results than it should.  And I also added an option to bypass the search index on the advanced search form -- this will result in a slower and more thorough search for partial word matches, and is able to search for words less than 4 characters.  Normal indexed searching is appropriate for most searches, but you now have an option if you can't find something with a default search.

I've turned off the use of a search index on the search, because the search results were so poor with the index enabled.  Not having wordzilla's custom search code is a shame.

phitsc, your post probably belongs on upgrade bug report thread -- it appears like the search is only returning a few of the search results, and only those where the word "cms" is in the topic.. it may be because of short letter length of the word cms.

yep that looks nice, i could go back to the single-icon view and use those when user has posted in a topic -- that would be cleaner and more minimal than having 2 columns of icons. anyone else prefer i keep the 2 icon column that indicates popularity, polls, etc.?

Yes i've enabled it by default.  Question is whether i should disable by default.

I thought about it some more and maybe its best to enable by default.  People who rarely get messages will not miss the rare message, and people who frequently get messages will be advanced enough to change the option.

There is a setting for it somewhere -- i'm just thinking i should probably disable it by default.
5620
Very interesting.

It sounds like you've found a bug.

The behavior you saw should not happen. The setting to hide after capture should NEVER show a pop-up after capture; it should be completely unobtrusive with nothing popping up.

The real question is why it's happening.  Let me know if you notice any other clues -- is the problem reproducible?

What do people think of the default option to show a popup messagebox when you receive a new personal message on the forum?

You may have notice that i've tweaked the css to make visited links darker than non-visited links -- it was initially the opposite.  I think this makes more logical sense.

I think that the way that you're doing it, i.e. coding the customizations and then making a label available, would be better than giving the users the ability to add code to the page.  Spammer and Security nightmare, IMO.

well one way it could be done very easily and safely is this:
i could add a profile field to each users profile, where they could write custom BBC code (which would include the ability to use url links),
and then the forum would display that text at the top (bottom) of the forum pages FOR THAT USER ONLY.

so basically a way of letting users add their own custom links/text. near the built-in forum menu -- that would affect them only.

of course this is really not any different than users using their own greasemonkey scripts, just a bit easier -- but much less flexible.

Perhaps a little icon overlay on the thread icon on the left, like a little "reply arrow". If there is only one icon with no indicators for anything, what is the point of the icon anyway?

I've added a second icon to the Unread posts page -- i may try to find a more subtle indicator, but let's try this.

the icon is matching the post icon -- which is USUALLY just the simple white one but can be different in some cases.

Perhaps a little icon overlay on the thread icon on the left, like a little "reply arrow"
ok let me look into it.
