Ah, so CD image on a home-burnt DVD... home-burnt optical discs expire a darn lot faster than pre-pressed media >_<. It's a real big piece of crap... and one of the reasons I pity people who base backup strategies on hd or bluray... the safest you can do is harddrives that you don't pull online often.

Hmmmm!

Did you check the .ini file? And do your two separate windows intalls use the same drive letter arrangements?

f0dder: Dina is unbeatable when it comes to coding fonts anyways :)
Yeah, I haven't found anything that comes even close... without cleartype (but still with standard font smoothing), most of those coding fonts look totally fubar. And I just can't stand cleartype for some reason :-s

Ah, so it's static blocks you want to replace? 100% exact, not even variety in ChArEcTEr CaSe?

Hm, that's pretty interesting.

My first guess: FARR keeps a history of your launched items. Upon reading the history and trying to extract icons, FARR uses standard windows icon extraction APIs... and the 32-bit Windows version is obviously totally ignorant of 64-bit PE executables.

I seem to be having a problem with my IE temp files, etc.  I do use ccleaner and cleanup, but sometimes I still don't seem to have all the files (temp, cookie, etc) cleaned out.  Any suggestions?
Do you remember to close down internet explorer before running CCleaner? Also, IE might not be enough, you might need to close down all programs using an IE HTML rendering control... that could include email applications, and iirc norton/symantec antivirus uses IE HTML control for it's interface too.

What are the restrictions on the text blocks you want to replace? What kind of input format (raw .txt files, XML, ...) , what are the precise criteria of the text you want to replace, etc.

Probably some unicode-aware regular-expression text replacer can do the job.

I played Descent with my SpaceOrb360 - that freaking rocked!

Deozaan: ugh, original pressed copy of descent3 giving CRC errors? That's not supposed to happen, unless you've had them in very hot and/or humid weather, or lying directly in the sun!  :tellme: :tellme: :tellme: :o

I'm glad you included the pictures illustrating the man throwing the snow. The pictures of the Wovel alone gave me the impression that it was fairly small. But when I see that the wheel is nearly as big as the man, it certainly helps give an idea of how big it really is.
Same here :)

btw, nice new avatar picture, allen!

Sure, they might pretty much have a monopoly on the ad market, and there's a lot of money involved in that... and there might be some negative consequences for webmasters who want to make money off ads. But how does that hurt me as a regular end-user, compared to how Microsoft's OS monopoly (arguably) hurts us all?

Oh, I worry about google as well... but they do seem a slight bit less evil than Microsoft. Might just be because they don't have quite as bad a monopoly as Microsoft (yet).

I'm pretty sure keeping the landscape deformations in sync between 12 people playing online is quite a challenge.
Dunno about that, really - iirc the game follows standard client/server architecture, so everything has to go through the server, and thus there aren't really any syncing problems that I can think of... at least not wrt. count of deformations.

Yeah it was a shame. I only played Red Faction 1 on PS2, so I think it was more a limit of the hardware. I heard Red Faction 3 is in production so maybe they'll improve that limit.

Dunno what the limit was exactly - probably to conserve memory, and there were probably some multiplayer considerations as well. I tried reversing the executable to remove the limit, but didn't feel like doing a superbig job of it, and I couldn't count (in-game...) the exact maximum number of deforms you could do, so I ended up giving up.

Deozaan: I'm not going to claim I know a truckload about global warming, but fact is that it's happening and very noticable - the winters in Denmark are very different now than 5 years ago. School vacations have been moved because of climate changes. Ice is melting at greenland, and at a faster/accelerating rate that's pretty unnerving. Whether you believe it's caused by man or not (I personally believe we've at least influenced the trend negatively), we definitely should try to do something about it, because things aren't going to be nice when the water levels rise and the deserts spread.

Gay marriage is probably not something that should be discussed here at DC :) - I can't see a problem with gay people getting most of the civil rights as "normal" people, but since the religious nutjobs don't tend to approve, gay marriages could be moved to the city hall...

Illegal immigration is a problem, but I wonder what would happen to the US economy if all the slave underpaid workers were thrown out of the country; face it, how many jobs are filled that no sane person would take? Construction business, repetitive packing jobs, dish cleaning, ...

AnkhSvn slows down Visual Studio launch time down majorly, even when opening projects not under source control :(. Also, I've had some stability issues with it, causing corrupt local repositories - pretty nasty.

It's a shame, because it's a pretty nice tool aside from those issues.

The deformable geometry in Red Faction was really cool, but it's a darn shame they imposed such a low limit on the amount of deformations you can do :(

The FTP client interface I've liked best is definitely FlashFXP - pretty clean and elegant. FileZilla is a cluttered mess, too thick borders, et cetera. But I don't use FTP->FTP (aka FXP) and FlashFXP doesn't seem to cope very well with gigabit LAN speeds, and FileZilla is free and does handle gbit pretty well, so...

As for OpenOffice instability, it's spreadsheet often locks up on me for no good reason - and it's not like I'm doing anything complex. Sometimes it'll wake up from the hang, other times I have to kill the process and repair the documents that were open. That has always worked so far, but I obviously lose any unsaved changes.

Sadly I never finished Half-Life 1 so I don't know how it ended.
Dig out your CD, dust it off, and get to it! The last few levels are pretty strange, but still nice imho.

Star Wars had Luke Skywalker
Star was has Darth Vader! :p

And now that I think of it, I never played EP1. When they released it I thought it was just a section of the Half-Life 2 story I already played, but for a cheaper price. Like buying the chapters individually.
I hear people claim that EP1 isn't as good as HL2 or EP2, but I still enjoyed playing it, and would recommend you to pick it up - it has some important storyline stuff.
