I'd expect 1 name (and not my own) to "stand out from the crowd", here

Ok i see the nature of the problem -- in the current css stylesheet we are using on DC, all hyperlinks are bolded automatically, to help distinguish them.  That makes the use of an <em> or <strong> impossible (or near impossible) to see.

There are actually a few places where em (or strong) is used on links, like in emphasizing buddies on member list (or it turns out on sticky topics) -- but most of the time it's sort of redundant.  The buddies on member list is an exception.

I have two choices for how to fix:
 • First, I can stick with our style of always bolding hyperlinks, and differentiate memberlist buddies (and indeed, if we like, all strong hyperlinks) with different css (making font larger, italic, dif color).
 • Second, we can reconsider whether its wise to bold all hyperlinks.

Both fixes are easy -- the real question this raises is whether we should be bolding all hyperlinks -- and i need some opinions on this.

So let's set aside the issue of highlighting buddies in member list -- i'll solve that once we answer the question of whether all hyperlinks should be bolded.

I do find it makes it easier to identify hyperlinks when they are bolded.  I have experimented with unbolding hyperlinks locally and one problem I have is that it becomes then very hard to distinguish visited hyperlinks from normal text (or alternatively from non-visited links).

Help me decide, here are some screenshots to compare:

Bold hyperlinks:

Non-bold hyperlinks:

Opinions? Which do you prefer?

i must admit, i don't see any difference, though in my browser there is one.  The current forum code uses inline html <strong> to indicate buddies; let me change it to use css and lets see if that fixes it.

Far From Home

i *LOVED* that one. with imagination the world is a sweeter place.  :-* :-* :-* :-*

I've been convinced of the value of having new content ready when we unveil the new cms version of the website, so YES we definitely want to figure out new kinds of CONTINUING content we can make a home for on the new dc website -- perhaps regular tech columns or blogs, and dc members willing to write such columns/blogs, etc.  Reviews, etc.

The only thing I don't want to happen now is to get distracted from migrating the old pages, which requires a bit of concentration.  Once we have the new pages moved over, but before we go live, we will make a concerted effort to line up some new content and ongoing content hopefully written by fellow dc members.  So if you have ideas, by all means please continue to think about them and plan them on your own until we are ready!

Sometimes, simple, no matter how inelegant it may seem, is just better.

it is very hard advice for a programmer to take -- and as much as i give it to myself i still find it hard to take -- but one of the things you learn over time as a developer is the extremely high price that one pays over time for complexity.
The initial development cost is misleading and unimportant compared to the accumulated maintenance costs over time with complexity.

General Software Discussion / Re: urgent free AVG expired request!
« Last post by mouser on September 06, 2015, 01:38 PM »
I've been using AVG and have been satisfied with it.. Here's what I'll say:
 • 1. I'm using AVG as antivirus and firewall. I want a combined system.  I previously used ESET and was very happy with that except for a known bug that was bluescreening me on removal/insertion of external drives, which caused me to switch. Before that I used Outpost and was very happy with that (until some bug drove me to Eset)
 • 2. I haven't noticed it slowing down my system -- if i had then i would drop it.  It's possible of course that it is doing so on occasion but that I am not noticing it or not properly blaming it.
 • 3. As far as being a resource hog, I haven't noticed it being so. Any tips on how to compare it (or web pages comparing it) would be welcome!

As a more general answer I should say that I'm more of a satisfactionizer than an optimizer when it comes to system tools -- once a tool works well enough i tend to stop looking for the best tool..

Now buddies aren't recognizable at all.

can you just confirm to me that we are talking about the same list? maybe a screenshot, or if you view source, do you see that indeed your buddies are being shown differently with <strong> or <em> and its just hard to see the differences?

I'd be more interested in getting the buddy-list visible in the current user list at the forum-frontpage by them having a different color (or colour for the UK based members) like old dc had

Can you elaborate on that -- remind me what it used to look like.  seems like a trivial fix once i know what i'm looking for.

To clarify, it looks to me from looking at the html of the page, the members in the member list i think you are talking about, are being colored/styled differently based on whether they are buddies, admins, etc.
But it may just be that the differentiations are subtle (bolding, etc.).

So first step is for you to tell me if indeed they are being styled different just not clearly enough, or is there some other problem that we are looking at different things, etc.

Having said that, we do now have some spare room for new buttons, and I am happy to add more bbc code buttons that people think might be important.

will we again have a button, making colourful posts?

the basic approach i have taken is to keep some bbc code functionality available, while making it a little less inviting.

So the color tag is still available to use, but there is no dedicated button for it.  I think there used to be large dropdowns for color and font size, which took up a lot of space.

Instead, there is one button that combines font size and color change:
Screenshot - 9_6_2015 , 11_21_38 AM.png.

Clicking this will insert both a font size and font color tag like so:

So, if you want some custom font you can use that button and then edit the details.

My thinking was that this had two advantages:
 • First, it helps keep the number and size of buttons down to a cognitively manageable level.
 • Second, it discourages people from playing around with font colors and sizes unless they are really determined to.

Ok i'll look into it.. the attachment mod we are using now is not the code i originally wrote for the old version of the forum.  Now we are using a version of this mod that i have been tweaking for our needs.  The author of that mod did a wonderful job with it and added a lot of nice features.  He even added the ability to refer to attachments from other messages in quotes, but there are some subtleties and im going to have to go back and look at tweaking it.

My memory is that when i was making changes to the code, i decided that we should basically not try to use the feature that tried to grab images from quoted posts -- though i can't remember exactly why (i think i just concluded that it wouldn't work reliably and would lead to more confusion), but what i clearly need to do if we do disable that feature, is make sure that quoted text does not have its images replaced and instead gets text like the old forum saying [see attachment in quoted message].

General Software Discussion / Re: How to completely uninstall Desktop Coral
« Last post by mouser on September 05, 2015, 07:01 PM »
Running the uninstaller SHOULD have uninstalled it and stopped it from running and prevented any popups from system tray.
If you are still getting those, then the program itself is still running (in other words there is no separate process popping up that message so the program itself is still running).

SO, assuming that it is Desktop Coral giving you this message, do this:
 • Double check that there is no DesktopCoral start menu folder in your start menu -- if there is, choose the uninstall item in that menu and you should be done.

Now, assuming that menu is not in your start menu because you already ran the installer:
 • First, find the Desktop Coral icon in your system tray, and right-click on it and choose exit.  If you can't find it, just proceed to next step.
 • Next, browse to C:\Program Files x86\DesktopCoral and delete that folder.

UrlSnooper / Re: url snooper is showing nothing
« Last post by mouser on September 05, 2015, 11:11 AM »
The bad news is that youtube video streams rarely have any recoverable url info in them that Snooper can discover.

The good news is that there are several free websites that can let you directly download youtube videos.  This is the one I use: http://www.clipconverter.cc/
Just be careful to avoid the stupid ad pages and click the correct downloads.

For the unread topics list I haved switch from using 2 icons in front of each message to using Jibz icon to indicate when you have participated in a topic; it is also now used on the main message list for a board.
Keep in mind the new indicator that shows you have participated in a topic is only shown when the icon for the topic is standard.  Special topic icons will now show such an indicator.

Here's how it looks now:
Screenshot - 9_4_2015 , 12_35_01 PM.png

I think that's ok since we rarely use topic icons other than the default one (in fact normal users are not given the choice of changing the topic icon when they post) -- that's to keep down the visual noise.  I sometimes use a special icon on newsletters and other official announcements.

If we really wanted to show an indicator regardless of the topic icon, we could probably do it by changing to some css that makes use of a small overlay.  Jibz maybe you can make me a tiny transparent image with just your overlay? Or we could use a different overlay image if people think they can improve on the one jibz chose.

Is it easy to make a link (perhaps an additional one) to the advanced search page have the bypassing index option selected by default?

It is now.  Just add a bookmark to:

However I think the pop-up should be closeable by simply clicking on the background/outside of the lightbox, as is true in most other lightbox implementations. It increases usability and speed/ease of use quite a lot.

should be working now.

JavaJones actually deserves some real credit for gently but repeatedly suggesting I check out joomla -- so far i've been thrilled with it and am very happy to have switched over to it from my original plan to use Drupal.

My only feedback so far is that the look of the top menu is really quite... Windows 95. Any plans to change that? I know it's a somewhat minor quibble.

I hear ya about the win95 look of the main top menu navigation.  It's just the css making the buttons look that way -- we will no doubt give it a more modern look before we go live.

In exploring this forum, if I click on 'bottom', it gives me a choice of 'top' or 'last'.
When I click on 'top', it gives me 'bottom' and 'last'.
I'm just letting you guys know that there is something seriously wrong here!
If you click on 'top', it should take you to where it says 'top'.
And when you click on 'bottom', you should go to where it says 'bottom'.
It's ass-backwards! You guys? Hello?

i'm not sure i understand what you're saying, but let me give a rundown of what the links (are supposed to) do:
 • bottom: goes to the BOTTOM of the current page (this link is shown at top of current page)
 • top: goes to the TOP of the current page (this link is shown at bottom of current page)
 • last: goes to the last post of the last page of a multi-page thread (shown both at top and bottom of pages; maybe should be changed to not show if the thread is only one page long)
 • prev: goes to previous page
 • next: goes to next page

personally i never use any of these links, for what that's worth
5599
The look of the site should be much improved, and much more responsive for mobile users, etc.  And some of the functionality should be substantially improved (search functions, etc.)

BUT, much like the forum upgrade -- it needs to be emphasized that the biggest benefits are in terms of future maintenance and extensibility of the site.  The current site is basically just a huge collection of hand-written static pages (something that wasn't so outlandish back in 2005 when the site was started, but which is now certifiably insane).

So this upgrade will bring the site into the modern era and make it much more enjoyable to maintain, update, and add new content, and ensure that we can keep going for another 10 years.

It's exciting!
5600
But yeah, if anybody wants updates, wants to offer up a feature suggestion - or other questions about the CMS, feel free to ask and one of us will update as often as we can!

Yes, except for the fact that it's taking all of our concentration to focus on migrating the current pages, so please refrain from deep discussions about big new features and content until we get the old content migrated.
