Kaspersky comes with a plugin for the Bat! (email program).  If I disable this plugin, is it a big deal?  Because I'm already using real-time scanning, what more protection is scanning the incoming and outgoing emails going to add?

That's a great idea mouser.  A unique email for each site that can be tracked.  How would you do this, though?  You'd have to create an individual email address for each site, and then you'd have to go through the whole verification process with address, phone number, that random word verification test at the end, and so forth.  It would be hard to automate such a thing.  but if you could, that would be very useful.

You don't need my approval for any kind of break from DC, mouser.  You work your ass off, take the time you want.  In the meantime, I'll try to hold to my promise to provide two more quality blogs before the end of the year.  If I come up with a good idea to somehow merge my jazz projects with DC, I'll let you know about that also, because that's what most of my free time is being spent on these days.

OK, I tried AntiSpamSniper for the Bat, and it worked great for the last few weeks.  So I bought the pro version.  It's a great program.  Other programs probably work fine also, but I liked the fact that this program is integrated with the Bat (plugin, toolbar, etc.).  It works very well, and I LOVE that I have a detailed log of what it does.

If you have several managers installed it makes it easy to choose which one you want to use for a particular download (or choose not to use an external download manager at all).
OK!  I can see how it helps for that.

Yes, I also dont understand this. I dont see why you would have more than one d/l manager installed anyways.
I guess when you need a download manager that has a specific feature, you can switch and use that one, then switch back to your regular manager.

General Software Discussion / What's the point of FlashGot (Firfox extension)?
« Last post by superboyac on October 19, 2007, 12:55 PM »
I don't get what FlashGot is for.  If you have a download manager installed on your system, what does flashgot do to make it better.  It seems to me that it's a manager for download managers.  I installed it and I'm trying it with IDM, and i don't see how it makes any difference whether I have it on or not.  I don't get it.

PPLandry, that's cool!  (You didn't have to do that, but I appreciate it.)  I'll try to do it next week, or go ahead and send me the file and maybe I can work off of yours.

Here is what I envisioned the database to behave like:
--every day, the players will enter how many games they won, and how many they lost (2 entries).  So for each player, each day will have a win entry and a loss entry.

--In some kind of pivot table (or something similar), a chart will rank the players from the highest winning percentage to the lowest.

--In Access, I wanted to have a nice sophisticated form entry, but I can't figure out how to do it yet.  Basically, in the form, the player would choose their name from the list.  Once they do that, a display will show the stats from their last 10 days.  Another display will show the current rankings.  Then, the player would pick the date, enter their wins and losses, press "submit" and the database will get updated.

Something along the lines of that.

Here are some screenshots:

OK, this will be my test project for this program.  I have to go back to work right now, but I'll try this again later.

Actually, I was unable to use the program because it kept crashing.  I'll ask about this more later.

This thing keeps crashing on me...I try to pin the html window so it doesn't auto-hide, and when I try to work, the program crashes.

Man, this program is intense.  Usually, I can figure out how to use a program within a few minutes.   I just can't get my mind around this.

OK, here's a specific example I'm interested.  Here at work, a group of us play basketball at lunch.  I wanted to start keeping track of the wins/losses of each person to see who has the highest winning percentage.  I started a database in Access, but it became too much work for something as trivial as basketball, so I'm wondering if SQLnotes can do it easier.  I don't know Access so it was difficult creating an input form and to show summary statistics without spending too much time in it.

Also, coming soon will be an integrated calendar, but Pierre is also working on Gantt charting for project work and he already is able to put in pivot tables and charts.  All of this puts his program beyond ECCO.
That would be highly useful for work applications.

One more question, for us non-programmer types, how would I take advantage of the calculation and database-like features of this program?  When would I be organizing my information (notes, webclips, addressbook contacts, etc.) and think, "hmm, I need to make this calculation"?

Very intriguing.  It's a very ambitious project you've started.

I agree with just about everything you've said.  What I doubt is if what you are trying to do can actually be accomplished effectively.  I'm having enough trouble finding the best notetaking software for myself (handling lots of plain text notes, "reducing the number of word processor files" as you say).

I know there are a lot of PIM programs out there that try to do much more that text editing, by including addressbook, calendar, todo lists, alarms, etc. modules in their programs.  I don't like these programs because they inevitably will struggle to do any of them well.  SQLnotes, however, applies this concept a little differently.  it sounds like the user can use the program to create his own specific modules based on his specific needs.  That is very unique and cool, indeed.  Very ambitious.

I am going to try this program for a while and see how it feels.  if you read the big notetaking review I wrote, I think I mentioned somewhere that even the simple notetaking programs can benefit from an ecco-style outliner rather than the normal rtf outliners.  i never used ecco, but I always loved its outliner.

Kasparsky used to be very good, it still is, but it's become too high profile for my taste. Too many people gunning for it.
I wouldn't use it.
I didn't understand the last couple of posts.  Why wouldn't Kaspersky fix a flaw if it posed a security risk?

http://www.sqlnotes.net/

This program has been mentioned in a couple of threads.  I checked it out and tried it out.  What is this for?  Is it an outliner for the Ecco freaks out there?  That's cool, because Ecco's outliner is very cool compared to the standard rtf bullet/numbering scheme.  But it also seems to have some Access-like capabilities.  I just don't get it.  It seems like an odd pairing of features.

So, what kind of applications is this program used for?  Why would I use it instead of Access, or Excel, or a regular notetaker, or other outliner software?  Actually, there aren't many ecco-like outliners, so I actually understand that part.

To take the forum down because they can't spare 5-10 minutes a day answering queries (everyone who has used the forum knows there weren't more than 3-4 posts per day - MAX).

I have to agree here.  They weren't the most active forums in the world.  3-4 posts a day actually sounds pretty accurate to me from what I remember.  I can't imagine those posts taking up too much time away from development of the software, it just doesn't sound right.  it's like deciding not to use email at work because you're getting 5 emails a day and it's taking too much time.  It's a silly argument.

General Software Discussion / Re: Know what else I hate about Groupwise?
« Last post by superboyac on October 05, 2007, 10:13 AM »
No, Daleus, I think you might have misunderstood me.  It's not the formatting in the email that bothers me (although I would side with you on that), it's the formatting of the headers (subject line).  Most email programs do not allow you to bold or color the subject line.  In most email programs a bold subject line usually means unread mail or something, so the ability to format it is bad.

Going back to your comments above, true, Groupwise didn't invent the bad things about email and a lot of programs do this kind of annoying stuff.  However, the entire Groupwise suite is pretty lame.  Outlook is so much better (and Outlook is on the bottom of my list for preferred software).  I understand if you're company has budgetary restrictions that make Groupwise the rational choice in email.  But I still hate it.  If I were in charge of IT, I'd get rid of Novell completely (even if it is a good networking solution despite Groupwise).  There are other ways to run a network that are just as good and won't tie you down to a crappy email/calendar system.

There are two sides of this argument, the user side and the developer side.  In many ways, this information management is still in the pioneering stages.  Even though PIM software have been around as long as computers have been, only recently have we started seeing the genre beginning to mature.  So we can't expect the perfect PIM to be out there at this point.  Also, information management is a wildly variable term depending on the individual.  The needs of one person are very very different from another, so again, one software can't cover it all.  PIM software is so broad in its application that almost any program out there can be a PIM software in some form or another.

That's why the best solution is not to expect one software to cover it all, but use different programs to accomplish specific functions.  Notetaking, email, clip capturing, photo organizer, desktop search, file cataloger, calendar, appointment maker...each one can potentially be it's own application.  By expecting it all in one package, you're going to get frustrated because you're expecting the software developer to think exactly like you, which will never happen.

They allow formatting of email subjects.  So freaking annoying.  You can bold, italicize, or otherwise apply any other rtf formatting to the subject line.  Totally ruins your inbox list because you know people are going to abuse it.  Groupwise email is the worst thing in the world.  I have some theories about the Groupwise email development team.  They are one of the following:
  • It was a bunch of geezers who knew nothing about email, and they initially created the system.  They may or may not still be there, but no one's tried to revamp it.
  • They're a bunch of mac guys designing a PC application.  Nothing worse than mac people infusing the pc world with their notions.
  • The developers are primarily webmail users.  They probably use hotmail as their main account.
  • The person in charge is actually the nephew of the Novell owner.

I hate Groupwise so much.  I just do.  It has made me fond of Outlook, which, for me, is mind-boggling.  Subject line formatting?!  What's the deal with that?  Is their any other email program that does that??

go into safe mode with networking, and see if the programs work in there.  If they do, then you have some kind of software conflict like I did.

Well, for anyone interested...

I uninstalled Kaspersky and everything is back to normal!  Yes!  So, the old adage is true, multiple firewalls and/or antivirus programs don't exist well together.  i will soon reinstall Kaspersky and hopefully everything will still be working.  Thanks for the help guys, but, honestly, you were no help.  It was all me.

Just kidding, I'm in a good mood, that's all.

Well, I tried changing my DNS settings to these two numbers that were in my router's config, but that didn't help.  I also looked at my network settings while in safe mode, and they were the same as in normal mode.  Even with the altered dns settings, firefox worked in safe mode.

I'm really thinking about uninstalling Kaspersky and seeing if that does the trick.  The whole thing just doesn't make sense to me.
