No, I said affiliate deals with some of the software vendors.

I never knew!

Did we learn elsewhere that Eset (NOD32) Security Suite is one of the best?

Really nice work, skrommel, Thank you!

I have taken up using the HDR goodies from Flickr, for my desktop wallpapers and screensavers.
Here it is a stunning Country Lake, 1255x855, 1.3MB, by Sergio Parisi
- to be found at http://www.flickr.co...isiphoto/2673568895/

It is one of the most beautiful images I have ever seen; it somehow makes me  longing...

I am not all a fan of Matousec, because I don't fully trust his methods to be as relevant, as he would like us to think, but I don't think his affiliate deals are a problem, on this matter. One is a magazine, hakin9, and the other is the Anti Rootkit site. How can such affiliates be a problem?

- I didn't make it very far, though. At the very beginning of installation, before any window had yet appeared, my Firewall (Outpost Pro) asked if I would allow the installation to change my registry! I clicked No, and aborted the procedure. How can it write to registry before asking IF or WHERE I would like to install? Now I understand why some were speaking harshly of this: they were offended, like I am! I won't try it out, either, but of course I too am then unable to speak about it's performance...

- I am a little surprised to read how harsh they spoke about 360desktop. I mean, one would think a coder's forum would give a first public beta version a longer line, but they said they tested for less than a minute! I didn't download it myself yesterday, because I couldn't see the point in the very concept, but now I will have to, I must, test and see if it really performs that bad...  :D

I guess readers of this thread allready know about Incollector,
- mentioned today by freewaregenius' samer.

http://www.incollector.devnull.pl/
http://www.freewareg...ructure-information/

incollector: a desktop note-taking app that uses tags to structure information

Posted July 22, 2008

Description: Incollector is a freeware note-taking program that runs in the background and offers simple notes on demand from the system tray. It uses user-defined tags and saved searches to structure information rather than a traditional folder/category hierarchical structure.
incollector.gif
Wish list:

    * Any or all of the items mentioned in “what it does not offer” above would be good.
    * The ability to define the location of the saved notes file on the hard drive.
    * Portability; although I imagine that might be difficult to achieve with an app that requires the .NET Framework.

The verdict: there aren’t many free non-hierarchical, tag-based desktop-note taking programs out there, which is what makes Incollector so interesting. You will appreciate Incollector if you are (a) not looking for a lot of bells and whistles necessarily, but (b) are interested in a good, straightforward desktop note taking program with the ability to structure information based on your own user-defined tags. A very nice program overall.

Version Tested: 1.1

Compatibility: Windows, Linux; no info on Vista.
Requires .NET 2.0 Framework for the Windows version,
requires Mono and GTK-Sharp to work on Linux.

Source code is available
The installer for Windows includes gtk+/gtk#/mono libraries and Industrial gtk+ theme.

When I (seldom) go to Start > All Programs, or (almost always) Quick Launch (True Launch Bar) to search for whatever program I am in need of, very often I cannot remember the name of the program in question, or I cannot remember if I am in need of program A, B, or C - because I cannot recall their features!

All shortcuts have this tooltip feature, point to the link and a tooltip can tell you what the linked program can do, but very few programmers use the feature. I also forget myself to type in such informations, when I create the shortcut.

No comments:
TooltipComment1.gif

Too little commenting:
TooltipComment.gif

Much better comments:
TooltipComment3.gif

Best comments, but this needed manual text editing because of line breaks
(- and there was too little space to tell about ", photobucket, imagewaste, imagecrack, flickr"):
TooltipCommentShortcut.gif

So, my idea is for some app to prompt the Properties > Comments to pop up, whenever a shortcut is created for an exe file. This way, when I find a new program that I would like to test, I can copy the description of the features, from the site, and when the program has been installed and a shortcut must be created, this app 'you' are about to author, will force me to remember to paste that description into Properties > Comments. And from now on and for ever I can merely point at the shortcut and remember what the heck it was that this particular program was supposed to be able to do.

- like this:
tooltip.gif

XP can only accept so and so many characters (256?) in a comment, but that is okay, I guess.
What is not okay is, that hard line shifts/
breaks are not accepted. Therefore I would very much prefer the application to remove all such, so I don't need to involve yet another program for this one feature. However, it cannot do so if it will change the clipboard's content.

@sri: do you have Phrase Express?

- yes, I think sri uses/used-to use Phrase Express:

tinny, did you try the free Phrase Express. I am curious to understand why you would pay up for DA when you can have Phrase Express for free.

Well, sri, now you have at least one reason to try out DA ...  ;)

- I have now had the opportunity to actually try the Better YouTube scripts, and I mostly think good of it.

When you arrive the video you want to see, you will see a different layout than before, because Better YouTube comes with a flash player of it's own, I can assure that you will like this one better:

byt1.gif

When you click "Download this video", you will quickly be taken to this page where you can choose which video version to get, Normal FLV, HQ FLV, or HQ MP4. If you don't choose within 3 seconds it will start to give you the low Q version. The bottom button is the one I would want, HQ MP4 Stereo version (HQ Flash is 2xMono, not stereo).

byt2.gif

I have not yet figured out how to stop it from starting downloading the low quality version, but I guess there is a trick that will sort it out. Other than this, I am very excited about Better YouTube.

A clock has been added to the right of the status bar (similar to the Firefox addon FoxClocks) - it just displays the current local time (12 hour format)
-wreckedcarzz (July 17, 2008, 04:30 AM)

I would say your intentions are to go the international way with this program - I mean, your testers and readers are scattered all over the world, aren't they? Allow me to make a guess and say that more than 80 percent of the world don't know for sure the difference between AM and PM, because we use the 24 hours' format. And the very meaning of this status bar clock showing local time, must be to help me understand if the other guy is on his way to school, supper or bed, or whatever - isn't it? It is of course not showing MY local time, one inch from my clock?! Meaning AM/PM is just about the only format that is not the best solution, if the user is not certain how to read AM/PM. I for one am not. Could you make it possible to have option for one or the other, please?

... SearchGT not .. updated for 3½ months..., but it is *not* as if there aren't a number of features still not available...

- so, yes, MrCrispy, I will agree with you on this in quite a number of situations. I guess most programs have some favourite situations where they may show some excellence, so to speak, and I have just told about (another) one of SearchGT's. However, if I had the money, I think I would try to see if I can use  SearchInform on my PC (it is being marketed for corporates). If you take the time to read the various "read more..." you will most likely think this is a VERY capable search application!

SearchInform comes in 3 versions, Free, $ 49, or $ 199.

- and among many other features it does index The Bat!

... must go google 'Image Compressor 2008' now, ...

Quite frankly I will only recommend Image Compressor ("IMC") if you are the kind of guy who think it is just fine to spend a lot of time getting to know a program, and also to wait for it to launch in the first place - it is loading far too  S  L  O  W  . But you must also think a programmer has a natural born right to make his program different from anything else! IMC was primarily made for compressing; the enlargement feature is hard to find and hard to understand how to use. With these reservations, I will say that IMC gives the finest image quality, and that is just about the only reason I am using it! And I use it every day.

General Software Discussion / Re: My favorite software! What's yours?
« Last post by Curt on July 18, 2008, 07:55 AM »
My current hands-down favorite is the oddly named Write Monkey.

I tried WriteMonkey ("WM") a year or so ago, but found it to be too 'odd'. Your praise made me give it another try, but once again it failed to please me. I made myslef acquainted with the strange GUI, and I accepted the various features, I guess you must call them. And I thought, okay, I can live with that, this could work for me! Then I told it to start with Windows, and restarted my XP to see how WM would perform at startup. At start, a message box popped up and told me that 'null' was missing, and all of my text was deleted and I had to start all over with a blank page.

It seems you have to gently close this program, before shutting down the computer? I didn't, and I won't. I just told XP to close, and left WM open. And because of this (?) the text was deleted. I find such a behaviour unacceptable, given WM has 'auto-save'.

I was also sadly surprised that I was not given the option to change a single hotkey - on my machine F12 will close down the computer.

I did find find some features about WriteMonkey that I like. Nevertheless it will now leave my PC.

Mouseless Browsing 0.4.4.1
by Rudolf Noe

Updated June 24, 2008

https://addons.mozil...US/firefox/addon/879

Long Description

==================================================
NEW BEAT VERSION WITH A LOT OF NEW FEATURES AVAILABLE UNDER http://mlb.rudolf-noe.de/
http://www.rudolf-no.../content/view/14/26/
==================================================
Mouseless Browsing (MLB) means id-based browsing.
Major goal of this extension is to enable browsing only by using the numpad keys.

HOW DOES IT WORK...
Mouseless browsing bases on marking all links, form elements and frames with ids. If you do not like to see all of them, you can configure this in preferences dialog of MLB. You can trigger an action (e.g. following the link) by simply entering the id and depending on the configuration confirming it by pressing Enter. When the checkbox "Execute automatically..." is checked the action is automatically triggered after the specified delay for auto-execution.

* You can configure to use the numpad exclusively for Mouseless Browsing. In that mode you can trigger actions even the focus is on a textfield or selectbox. The output is suppressed. If you not use the exclusive mode then triggering actions by typing ids don't work if the focus is on a textfield or a selectbox. Entering the id while holding the CTRL-Key triggers the action in any case. You can toggle between the two modes by pressing the num-key twice within 1 sec.

* Entering an id for a link results in navigate the browser to that link, entering an id for a form element results in clicking resp. selecting that form element. Entering an id for a frame results in focusing the frame so you can scroll the content. The ids for frames are always place in the top left corner of the frame and they have a different background color.

* By default links are opened in the same tab. If you press the ALT-key while entering the id the link is opened in a new tab. The same happens when you press the configurable postfix key (default: +) after you have typed in the id of the link.

* If you would like to select a link you have to press the configured postfix-key (default: shift) after you've typed in the id of the link.

* There are also the following non-visible ids which you can enter: "0" focuses the address field, "00" the web search field and "0" + [1-9] activates the appropriate tab.

* Finally there are shortcuts for navigating back an forth in the history (default: divide/multiply-keys) and for scrolling up/down (default: minus/plus)

PLEASE REFER TO MY WEBPAGE FOR THE FULL DOCUMENTATION
Works with:

    * Firefox: 1.5 – 3.0.*

the website for Search GT
http://www.search-gt.com/
says - "Completely integrated into Windows Explorer"

can anyone say what that means... context menu or ..??

- tomos did get an answer, but I would nevertheless like to stress out an important point:

4. Complete integration into Windows Explorer. Search GT duplicates the Windows File Search functionality (check the screenshots). You start the search and get the search results within the Windows Explorer window.

sgt.gif

-search-gt.com

Some of the times I am in the need of renaming, the files in question would be scattered in different folders all over the My Documents directory, or even in C:\..  How do you rename files this far away from each other? The answer is: use SearchGT! Well, not for the actual renaming part, that is, but for the gathering of the files in question, of course. Apart from the blazing speed, this little feature, that SearchGT will show the search result in a normal Explorer window, is what makes that application extra useful. Because when the resulting files from a search within 3 seconds are shown in a normal Explorer window of it's own, you can OpenWith or SendTo your renamer at once, saving a lot of time and work.

I was just reminded of this extra plus today, when I found out that I had been spelling a certain name wrongly many times. ALL of the correction took me less than a minute, even though it included twenty files of five different file types placed in six different folders.

However, I am a little concerned that the program not has been updated for 3½ months. Hmm...  Yes, it is both stable and bugfree (in my setup), but it is *not* as if there aren't a number of features still not available...

You didn't tell us which browser you are using!??

If you are using Firefox the answer is even more simple than all these wise fellow dudes have implied. InBasic is offering the Auto-Shutdown application for Firefox Built-in Download Manager. You click download as usual, and you click Auto-Shutdown, and then you just leave home or whatever you would wanna do. When the downloads are all finished, InBasic will gently close, auto-shutdown, both Firefox and the computer. Nice and very easy!
