Timns Apps / Re: Build 89
« Last post by timns on January 24, 2011, 08:28 PM »
in a quick first pass, Auspex seems generally well behaved in Forté Agent, and Take Command, and 4NT, and Roboform.

used wizard to create aus -> Auspex; wizard worked nicely for that
in Forté Agent "aus" works as Auspex unless it's fired by anything other than a space, otherwise "auspex"
in JP Software 4NT "aus" works as Auspex unless it's fired by anything other than a space, otherwise "auspex"
in JP Software Take Command "aus" produces auspex (no capitalization) no matter what
-cranioscopical (January 24, 2011, 07:06 AM)
What happens is that Auspex just tacks on the remainder of the word that you've already started typing, so it's only adding the 'pex' part, hence the lack of capitalisation. I should do a upper/lower case check when replacing, to see if it needs to go back to the beginning of the word.

the only way to display the window from the tray is to right-click the "tray icon/show" item; left-clicking does nothing (should it?)

As of next build, a double left click on the icon will restore the main window.

Then we could have "New Apps for Donationcoder's Anniversary" - NADA!

Thanks! I bit the bullet and downloaded SpamCombat late last night, so today will be interesting.

First impressions of Spam Combat follow.

Pros:

  • The interface is more business-like than Mail Washer
  • The whitelist / blacklist filters are on permanent show so it's very easy to update them
  • It's ALREADY doing better at spam/not spam detection than MW :o
  • It's freeware - yet clearly well supported, and in fact you can purchase support for $35
  • There's a splendid pop-up from the system tray icon that summarises what's waiting in your inboxes, and when the next mail check is due
  • Stats! Gotta love 'em
  • Hot keys for fast categorization of messages
  • Pretty solid help file - albeit a bit out of date

Cons:
  • Was unable to automatically import my Thunderbird accounts
  • Does not minimize after I hit the "run mail client" button
  • After adding a sender to the whitelist, the interface does not update that message to reflect that it's now "good"
  • Cannot launch hyperlinks from within the preview window. I liked this feature in MW - for example, I'd see a reply to a DC thread that I'm following, and can launch the browser direct from MW and delete the message without having to have it load into my mail client.
  • An annoying dialog asking "Are you sure you want to delete checked messages from server?" even if there are no checked messages.
In my opinion, Pros outweigh the Cons quite considerably, so: Spam Combat IN, Mail Washer OUT - of my software list anyway.

Do you have triggers set up? It's entirely possible to blank out the triggers altogether so that Auspex does not perform the replacement.

What I'm saying is this - do you have anything in the "Triggered by" field:

trig.jpg

Nest question would be: is this occurring in any application? e.g. boring old Notepad - everything should work with that!

EDIT: are you just using "TAB" by any chance? Just found a bug.

Then the wizard : works fine for 'Replacements' but not for 'Completions', with the latter you just get an empty entry in the word list which gives an error when you delete it.
Fixed - but since I'm still tinkering with that, I'll hold off until there's a bit more to release.

Unless there are any violent objections  :o

I've tried re-indexing, closing and re-opening but no triggers for replacements work... only the autocompletion popups show and work.

Also there is a ghost tab in the task bar when 'closing' to tray.

Then the wizard : works fine for 'Replacements' but not for 'Completions', with the latter you just get an empty entry in the word list which gives an error when you delete it.

xp etc.

When you installed the new build, did you also definitely replace the .dll also? I'm sure you did, but I have to ask since it's such an obvious explanation for that behaviour.

Anyone here have much experience with Spam Combat compared to Mail Washer?

I used Mail Washer 6 for years, and liked it very much. Then MW2010 came along and as far as I am concerned, the wheels fell off. First there was the disastrous decision to change to the "pay per year" license model. Then there were the shocking number of bugs, the horrible interface, the not-so-good spam detection... and finally it takes a good minute or so to start up these days.

So! Hunting around, I came across Spam Combat which looks like it might be freeware, and has what appears to be comparable capabilities. Does anyone use it in anger? Any good advice or opinions before I download and spend ages setting it up?

Timns Apps / Build 89

Folks,

I just uploaded build 89 here

A few bugs fixed, and some new features to bring the program to a point where I can start adding the features I've got in mind after nudone's wondrous suggestions.

I am especially interested to learn if this build works in a more friendly way with a few of the programs mentioned in Redmine:

* Forte agent
* JP Soft products
* Roboform
* iScribe
* Spam Combat

Also, I'd like to know if we're doing better with things like ctrl+enter, win+G, alt-something-or-other

Thanks!

The only problem with using something like RedMine is that it's probably a bit "dry" and feels more oriented towards tracking issues with existing applications.

I know it also has a wiki, but is there something more GUI-wiki-like out there with perhaps a better focus on the Idea Bank (love that name btw) approach?

Hey Renegade:

However, there are so many varieties of Soju Flower that identifying them is simply a monumental task. One is better off just giving a rough guess at its genus and phlegm.

Do you mean phylum?

Hahahah~!

Nope! I do mean phlegm.

One of the original purposes of "renegademinds.com" waaaayyy back was to publish pictures of Soju Flowers... i.e. Vomit on the street left from the previous nights drunks. I removed them though and simply alluded to them there. They were pretty graphic. One included pictures of pigeons eating puke.

Holy cow - ok I totally fell for that  ;D

This whole badge thing is unfair.  it's totally programmer-biased.  I'll take any badge I can get.  How about an ass badge?  I think I'm pretty exceptional at being an ass.

Do you use Linux in any capacity?  If so, you can add that badge to your profile yourself.  Or, you can draw a picture of Cody and get a Cody badge.   :D

I'm fetching my crayons right now. The cody badge is about the nicest one of all  :-*

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Whirlyword
« Last post by timns on January 20, 2011, 07:03 PM »
My first entry for NANY 2011 is: WhirlyWord

This is a simple puzzle game based loosely around mating Scrabble with a slot machine. Spin the reels and try to make the words shown in the list.

  • Why were the NANY applications coded? (I mean why decide to code this particular app)

I fancied doing a simple game again this year after I had quite a lot of fun coding up Twigatelle for last year's NANY. I wondered if I would be able to re-create the effect of spinning reels in a nice way, from scratch. No doubt I "discovered" a very standard way of doing that trick, but I get some satisfaction of trying to solve these things myself.

  • What IDE did you use, if any?

I used IntelliJ IDEA from JetBrains. It's a Jave IDE I've used for years now: I'm very comfortable with it, and I find it about the nicest IDE I've personally tried.

  • What language(s) is the application written in?

Java, and is launched using Java Web Start from my site http://head-in-the-clouds.com

  • Does it rely on any 3rd party libraries / code / graphics?

All of the code is my own.

The graphics are all generated on-the-fly, using procedural textures that I developed last year for Twigatelle, or in the case of the reels, simple text with filters on top.

Didn't even borrow any icons for this one ;)

  • Were any clever design principles used?

Not really. Java 2D was not too bad to get going in the first place, and I lifted a lot of the Twigatelle code for the basic animation of the reels. Being Java, the code is reasonably object-oriented, a bit verbose but easy to maintain.

It's probably about 20,000 lines of code, although the main game loop itself is probably only about 10% of that. It's all the faffing about with loading resources, creating textures, beziers, particles etc. that add up.

  • Or any really hairy algorithms that you'd like to boast about?

The only "clever" thing that I think is worth mentioning is the motion-blur on the reels when they are spinning. I was pretty pleased with the effect, as I may have mentioned :)

  • What was the trickiest part?

Getting the dictionary in place. In the end I wrote a little sub-program to find seven letter words that had at least 120 valid anagrams each, pulled from a public domain word list.

  • Would you like to make a mention of any other DC members who helped out?

There were some nice messages from a few folks, and, in alphabetical order, I would like to particularly thank Cranioscopical, Deozaan, Mouser, and Stephen66515 who all made suggestions that I feel improved the game.

I also want to thank Perry one more time, since he worked so hard on keeping all us "nanyteers" organised.
