I'm not denying that.  What I'm saying is that people say that *he* meant the story to be about censorship, not that *I interpret the content of his writing to have themes of censorship* or something similar.  The two are *very* different- one being quite logical, and the other being quite abhorrent to me.

Absolutely. It's quite insane for people to claim that someone else meant something that they cannot possibly know. Intentions simply aren't accessible unless stated explicitly. I can see how that would really piss Ray off! :)

Exactly. He meant what he meant, but people got other things out of it that he didn't.

One point that I want to bring up... F451 wasn't about censorship, and Bradbury himself would get wroth when confronted with the fact that people thought it was about the same.

It's been a while, though I might have it in my library - so what was it about? What else were the Firemen doing burning books if it wasn't censorship?

Well, unfortunately for Ray, he may be just a little bit wrong...

<art_criticism_theory>
Good art transcends the artist and the artists intentions, taking a life of its own and revealing meaning in different ways to different people.
</art_criticism_theory>

While artists may not like that sometimes, it's a deep compliment for them.

So while Ray may not have intended it to be about censorship, that's not what a lot of people got from his book. Call it an unintended gift. :P

I forget where I was reading, but you can run Mono on a Raspberry Pi and program in C# if you like! I forget the distro though... :( Meh... The wait is long enough so no rush~! :P

General Software Discussion / VLC Hit 1 BILLION Downloads
« Last post by Renegade on June 24, 2012, 11:19 PM »
A billion is a big number... very big...

http://blog.qt.nokia...000000000-downloads/

The VLC media player recently hit 1 billion downloads, VideoLAN project reports.

VLC’s enormous popularity is largely caused by the huge variety of video-formats it supports, and its cross platform support. VLC is made with Qt and it’s free software. It runs on desktop systems including Windows, Mac OSX and Linux. It also runs on *BSD systems, Solaris, Android, QNX, Syllable, Maemo, MeeGo and OS/2.

It was in 2008 with version 0.9.0 when the VLC project switched to Qt. Since that point it has been downloaded around 824 million times. The real number is even higher because Linux, *BSD and smartphone systems are omitted from the statistics since VLC is downloaded directly from app stores.

The project manager Jean-Baptiste Kempf has spoken to us previously about why they switched from wxWidgets to Qt. It’s cross platform, open source compatible and has UTF-8 support, making it Asian-language friendly. With this 0.9.9 release, the team had to redo the UI from scratch. The did that with Qt, and VLC became a huge success, with the new Qt-based interface a large part of the success, according to Kempf.

“The problem with Qt is that you spend more time thinking about your
problem than coding the solution  :) ” –  Jean-Baptiste Kempf.

(Been looking into the current state of cross platform GUI toolkits...)

Has anyone here tried one of the new digital drills? They have drill bytes, not bits and those are programmable for just about any use.

This was kicking around a few weeks ago on Slashdot too before this article. Last I recall sometimes it's not so easy for the servers to know which is just a permissions "access forbidden" and which is censorship. Also this is sorta a joke, more social commentary, because for 50% of the censorship you can bet the govt won't even allow this error code.

There was a story a few days ago "telling people we are spying on them violates their privacy". (??!)

Was that the one where the NSA is whining about being asked how they are cooperating with Google to spy on people?

Does anyone know much about this stuff? I'd like to give it a shot with some software ideas, but the options are a tad freaky now with so many....

@Renegade - Arduino is already established and well beyond the curiosity/novelty stage. Not a bad choice if you're looking to develop something that has an active audience. You can also think outside the box with this puppy. Some musical instruments are out there that use Arduino for their base hardware. Ditto for some audio realtime processing uses.

Might be a natural for you since you're into music apps already. Just a thought... ;)

Exactly~! Thanks~! :D That's the perfect jump point for me to focus research on. (I hate chasing down a million different products -- better to start with some advice and a bit of focus!)

Well, having looked some more, it's not quite what I want to work with. I'm really looking to work with an OS already there so I have a solid set of tools to work with, rather than having to go and code them all from scratch. I just don't have the time, unfortunately. I'd love to do it, but... time...

Any suggestions for one that runs Linux? That would be perfect. Or even Windows... though not really too hot on that idea as I don't really want to pay licensing fees like that.

Police Ticketing Informal Rideshare Participants Based On No Law

This probably falls into the "Read and weep" category.

<insert profanity here />

That's nothing short of extortion and thuggery. The Port Authority officers responsible for that should be arrested and charged with racketeering. Same for the police officers there.

It's amazing that so many people think things are still just fine... Yeah, fine as in you'll pay a fine... :(

Some proposed, 2012, and available PC boards:
Raspberry Pi; BeagleBoard-xM; BeagleBone; PandaBoard ES; Cotton Candy; Ninja Blocks; NUC Intel; VIA (APC/Android 8750 PC); Gooseberry; Olimex (A13-OLinuXino); Maple Board (LeafLabs); Arduino; gumstick (gumstix).

Raspberry Pi; $35
BeagleBoard-xM; $79
BeagleBone; $??
PandaBoard ES; $182
Cotton Candy; $??
Ninja Blocks; $??
NUC Intel; $400
VIA (APC/Android 8750 PC); $49
Gooseberry; $??
Olimex (A13-OLinuXino); $??
Maple Board (LeafLabs); $35
Arduino; $19 (huh?)
gumstick (gumstix) $149+

Quite a range out there. The $19 board freaks me out. But, there are lots of options.

So, it seems like the <insert expletives here /> <insert description of copyright industry here /> (I'm no longer capable of being civil about this) are going to make it illegal to sell your stuff...

http://www.naturalne...t_Supreme_Court.html

There is another copyright battle emerging over intellectual property, and this time you, John or Jane Q. Citizen, could be smack-dab in the middle of it, for one of the most innocuous acts you could imagine - selling your used iPad.

...

Designed here, but made overseas - that's the issue

According to reports, the Supreme Court case centers around the "first-sale doctrine" in copyright law. The doctrine simply means that you are allowed to buy and sell the things you purchase - even if your things have a copyright holder, you can still sell them because the copyright holder's control extends only to the "first-sale," a concept that the high court has observed for over a century.

Think of it like this. You buy a book by an author; the author owns the copyright so you can't legally make copies of the book without that author's permission. But, under the first-sale doctrine, you bought a copy of the book and sell your copy to someone else - a friend, co-worker or a willing buyer online.

In 1998, the first-sale doctrine was challenged by some copyright holders, but the Supreme Court held that it applied to all products made and sold in the U.S. The current case, however, stems from products manufactured abroad; in particular, it involved textbooks.

Yeah... Another WTF moment... Way out of control.

But seriously people... What person wouldn't want to remove Justin Bieber from their computer? And even then, if they didn't, would you want them to use your software? :P

And if people are so stupid to run someone out of town for a BSD shirt, they're not in the market. They probably have a hard time operating an Xbox and struggle to read "Dick and Jane".

I have a foul mouth, and well, may not be the average for the audience. Though I do write software.

But seriously, that would totally be a super-plus in my books if I were looking to buy. (I have a Help & Manual license, so don't need anything else at the moment.)

I think it makes things much more fun and attractive. But do get other opinions. It would be a big plus in my books, but I'm perhaps not the best judge.

Living Room / Re: Microsoft's New Surface Tablet Hybrid
« Last post by Renegade on June 20, 2012, 01:34 AM »
Just sat through the full 47 minute video. Looks like a winner to me. Makes the iPad look like the obese iPod it has always been. I really, really can't wait to swap my iPad for a "Surface" now I've seen that it's a PC crammed into a tablet.

That I like. I want the full power of a desktop in a tablet that I can take around. Imagine just taking EVERYTHING around and plugging in a real keyboard and a real monitor and a real mouse. Bang. Done. With a real OS? Yeah... sexy stuff~! :)

Wonder how the keyboard feels, when typing some forum reply or other message :tellme:

The keyboard for my Samsung Galaxy Tab is about the same size, and it's manageable, barely... They're almost the same size as those Apple iMac keyboards... So if you like those, you'd like it. If you hate the iMac keyboard, well, then the keyboard there will also suck, but considering it's for a tablet, there is some kind of excuse.

Keep in mind that I use a full 106-key keyboard and like it. And I'm horribly predisposed to hating/loathing small form factor inputs. You know those tiny mice? Hate 'em. Won't use 'em. Would rather take a hammer to them. Amazes me that adults can actually use them when they seem like they'd be comfortable to use for a 7-year old.

I am an input factor bigot. :(
