Great, glad to hear it worked out

(so it sounds like maybe you were performing an "active window" capture rather than a full-screen capture -- that's one of the things the beta fixed on windows 10.)

but when I take a screenshot of a window on another monitor, a portion of the background of the active window is taken as well.

might it be that it's not that its on another monitor that is causing this behavior, but rather when the active window being captured is a CHILD widow and the parent is behind it?

2..some screenshots seem to be corrupted and some seem to contain a previous  screenshot overlapping it.
#2 sounds bizarre!! the fact that you are eaiting for your file explorer to update suggests that it cant possibly be that they are being taken too quickly.  something else must be going on..   i'd love to hear if you can figure out a clue..  are the files being auto named uniquely?

1. An option to close SC when clicking the red X button in the Quick-Capture bar

there is a different button for toggling the main sc window.

2. I was wondering if it's in consideration to incorporate the option to upload the screenshots to the very popular imgur.com.
absolutely, it is on my todo list with pretty high priority.

Screenshot Captor / Re: delayed screenshot and context menus
« Last post by mouser on September 21, 2015, 02:28 AM »
There is no reason that capturing a screenshot should close the context menu, as long as you are triggering the capture with the standard PrtScr hotkey and not doing an active window capture.

There should be no need to use a delay.  You should be able to bring up context menu, hit PrtScr, and be done.
It sounds like you were using a delayed capture to trigger the capture, then bring up the context menu, and then have it capture -- which should still work -- but there is really no reason to go to such trouble, you should be able to simply hit PrtScr to capture once the context menu is showing.

Now if you are triggering the capture with the toolbar/tray menu/Alt key modifier, that can create issues.

Is it possible that Evernote is somehow interfereing? Is Evernote taking over the PrtScr button?  Does the right-click context menu capture in OTHER programs using SC?

Can you elaborate a little bit -- so you are performing a standard full screen Screenshot with PrtScr button, using Screenshot Captor -- and there is a delay before EVERY capture? How long is the delay?

It almost sounds like you are doing an ACTIVE WINDOW capture -- which can trigger some behaviors that might cause the behavior you describe. Try the new 4.13 BETA version downloadable here: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3474.0

I haven't followed the story closely but from the headlines I gathered that AVG are touted as the honest guys telling us as it is, while everyone else does it but hides in legal gobbledygook.

The notion that collecting and reporting "browsing and search history" is standard operating procedure for an antivirus/firewall tool is insanity -- it's completely counter-intuitive and unacceptable -- it has nothing to do with the job of these programs.  And for software we pay (yearly) for?!?!?  >:(  It better not turn out to be true.
5483
Ridiculous.

That page does say this:
For its part, AVG has stated there will be a way for users to opt out once the privacy policy is active. "Those users who do not want us to use non-personal data in this way will be able to turn it off, without any decrease in the functionality our apps will provide," a company spokesperson said.

Although the page mentions a clearer privacy policy coming out in October, it's not clear at all whether this collection of data is already happening.

Looking at the options in the *current* version of the program, it's very unclear whether one can turn off these things or just tweak some subset of the nasty information collection:

This thread was originally moved to the basement area in anticipation of it degenerating into a political back and forth.
After some discussions we have decided to be less trigger-happy about moving threads just because it appears they *might* go off the rails.

You can help us keep threads from having to be moved off the main forum by helping us keep threads like this from becoming political back-and-forths with the same people making the same points over and over.  If it's a controversial political topic, make your point and then move on and let others have their say!

I am a user of AVG and if this turns out to be true I will drop it like a hot potato.

As a rule I am much less concerned about privacy and data collection than most people, and generally don't worry about anonymous statistic gathering, but what's described here is absolutely outrageous -- so far beyond the pail that it is hardly conceivable.

Can this possibly be true, that AVG is about to flush its reputation down the toilet and start a mass exodus and loss of trust that they will never be able to regain?

For a security tool to do this.. I'm just speechless..

Surely this can't be right?

This isn't exactly what you were asking, but the nircmd alias is a great one for things like shutting down pc and other system functions:

In general you can put any dos commands in a .bat file and put that batch file someplace that FARR can find it and launch it.

Screenshot Captor / Re: screenshot captor images changed
« Last post by mouser on September 19, 2015, 04:39 PM »
Hi Paul.

From the screenshot you've posted, it looks to me like it actually captured the window, but the INNER CONTENTS of VLC Player window are black.

That suggests to me that the problem is not related to any security issue, and that nothing changed in your screenshot files -- they were almost certainly always black inside the VLC window.

Assuming I'm right, the first answer to your questions it that there is nothing you can do to restore those images.

The reason for that is that some video players (VLC) and games will use an ACCELERATED video mode to play video at the fastest speed, which can interfere with screenshot taking tools.

There are a few things to do going forward:
  • First, do your testing on VLC while playing a movie and make sure your screen captures show the contents -- since normal screenshot capture may work perfectly on everything EXCEPT the contents of the vlc window.
  • See if capturing an entire screen with Screenshot Captor bypasses the problem.
  • VLC has its own built in screenshot tool you could use (at the bottom of the Video menu).
  • Disable accelerated video mode on the adapter (or better yet inside vlc -- though someone else may have to help with that since i don't know if there is a setting for this); the downside of this is that it may slow down playback but testing will tell you that.

Do let us know how it goes.

ps.
There are some cases where a capture is ENTIRELY black, which are caused by a security program being an ass; but SC will detect and warn about such cases.  In your cases unfortunately you can see that the controls of the window were captured just not the contents, so that fooled SC into thinking the capture was successful.  One thing I could do going forward is check from a list of known applications being captured (vlc, etc.) and warn on the first capture with some tips..

It may simply be a matter of resizing the dock so that it's a vertical strip when docked to the side.

Can you show us a screenshot of how it looks?

fyi: Forum upgraded to v2.0.11.
5492
Interesting.. if we really wanted to be sure if 4.13 was the solution, then you could always install 4.12 on top of 4.13 temporarily and see if the problem is still there.  But as I've never heard of this issue before i'm happy to just write it off.

ps.
you do know that SC has a very easy built-in ability to combine images side-by-side (vertically, horizontally, with various automatic resizing options)?

Interesting article today talking about how free-to-play games morphed from making cool things to being all about collecting data and money.

Time passed, Free to Play became a thing. I went from company to company. Each time, every new project became less and less about how we can do cool things, and more about how we can track and target users to get the most whales possible, boost chart position and retain users to shove as many ads on them as possible.

If you run a WordPress site, make sure it's updated and secure..

From ArsTechnica today:

Attackers have hijacked thousands of websites running the WordPress content management system and are using them to infect unsuspecting visitors with potent malware exploits, researchers said Thursday.

The campaign began 15 days ago, but over the past 48 hours the number of compromised sites has spiked, from about 1,000 per day on Tuesday to close to 6,000 on Thursday,
