General Software Discussion / Re: Word Processor OS
« Last post by MilesAhead on January 22, 2011, 04:15 PM »
Hmmmmm wonder if there's any such thing as an extended Dos OS for Pentium class systems with NTFS support?  My first PC was XT clone with Dos 3.1 and it came with a free word processor.  Actually worked pretty well considering I only had 512KB ram to work with.

Rather than use graphics mode it used symbols to denote text with word processing attributes in the editor.

To "automatically boot" into the word processor you'd just add it to the Autoexec.bat file. :)

I was probably already bombarded with ads and had to wait 30+ seconds before I could even download the installer.

But didn't you know that: (see attachment in previous post)
 :-\

Finish your sentence! The suspense is torture!

Haha! Sorry, I posted then realised I hadn't added the graphic  :-[

Ha! I bet if the reader donated there wouldn't have been a wait to see the graphic!!  8)

It is a nice tool.  Worth the $50. I haven't used it much on standard DVD but the ones I have played fine in my WD player.

Living Room / Re: Alternate movie subtitles for commentary, trivia, etc?
« Last post by MilesAhead on January 09, 2011, 01:17 AM »
You might check into players that automatically search for subtitles matching the movie you are playing.  Some may try to get closed caption/commentary esp. if your subtitle preferred language is the same as the audio.

I don't go in for commentary tracks.. just English subs for foreign audio.
Some of the players have configuration what sites to search for subs. That may give you a starting point.

Mostly I look for English subs for Asian films so I'm not up on which sites have databases for commentary tracks.

The pop-up note taker category is interesting.  Not a dedicated pop-up note taker, but TreePad Lite could be used for that purpose.

http://www.treepad.com/treepadfreeware/

As a "database" just create an .hjt file with it named "PopUpNotes.hjt" or whatever.  Any mechanism to launch whether a launcher hotkey program, a .cmd file or whatever to open the .hjt file.  When it opens in TreePad Lite the root node should be selected. To create a new child node for your note hit the Insert key.  After naming the node hit the Tab key to type or paste text for the note.

TreePad Lite has the fewest features. No image support. But for that reason it's very snappy when it opens.  The .hjt file format is all text.  You can store quite a number of notes in a few KB.

General Software Discussion / Re: SRWare Iron 5.0.380 beta browser
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 25, 2010, 01:15 PM »
I've been using Chromium 10.0.602.0 (build 68163) for awhile now. I use the zip rather than the installer. Has SRWare gotten rid of extension incompatibilities? I know many I tried with it assumed paths were the same as Chrome and would not work.  Chromium works will all the ones I've tried.

WinPatrol has an option to detect changes to IE home and search settings. If they are changing FF it's likely they try to change IE also.

Thanks for the program skwire, and to all who contributed code and suggestions.

Never really noticed it.  :-[

I guess it would be cheating them making it that easy. :)
Still, it's a good thing to have for other lists that don't display a sum.

I'm starting to like SPlayer myself.  Since VLC crashes incessantly on my Windows Seven machine I've been looking for alternatives.  SPlayer uses GPU acceleration even though the card in the W7 machine is only nVidia with 128 MB dedicated ram(even Splash Lite won't do acceleration on that PC.)  Doesn't dig out embedded PGS subs but it will pick up idx/sub with same base filename so I can get around that by demuxing the subs and using BDSup2Sub to export idx/sub.

To me the deal on AnyDVD seems kind of steep.  I believe I did the trial a few months ago.  Didn't work on everything.  For me if it's going to be hit and miss anyway, I'll go with the free options as much as possible.  If you're trying to cover all the bases that may be a strategy. :)

I don't like the idea to paying again for software unless you get something with it besides the program.  For example one of the binary news readers I have is Usenet Explorer. It expires periodically, but the software keeps working.  Forking over to extend the license, other than updates, also includes an nzb search service subscription.  That I can deal with.  But to buy another software that expires just to get me to pay again, I wouldn't do it. Not unless it printed money that passed Secret Service inspection. :)

@4wd guess it's one of those terms where the people who get it wrong insist on using it anyway. I remember when I was a kid, everyone I knew used the term centrifical force.  Image my chagrin when I moved to a different neighborhood and found out there's no such thing. :(

The Wiki entry for Transrating is there, but it's empty. :)

@superboyac if you are looking for DVD in to DVD out then BD Rebuilder does not fit the bill.  It accepts BluRay as input.

To compress DVD9 to DVD5 with high quality I recommend DVD Rebuilder Pro. One of the included encoders is HC encode.  The pro version allows you to launch an instance per core similar to FAVC.  Also there are some other tweaks including converting letterboxed DVD to 16x9.  Settings for movie only backup or main movie with menus.

It's kind of interesting to watch it as it breaks the movie up into pieces, does the encoding, then reassembles it.  There's a technical explanation online someplace about the algorithm but my eyes glazed over after the first paragraph.

Post New Requests Here / Re: Recycle Bin Configurator
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 12, 2010, 07:30 PM »
The thing I'm running into, I have an internal drive stuck in a USB 3.0 docking station.  That particular dock has a time-out to spin the drive down.  When I empty the recycle bin, if the drive in the dock is spun down, I have to wait while it spins up.  I don't keep the recycle bin icon on the desktop.  I don't know how many times I've put the icon on the desktop just so I can turn off recycle bin coverage for the drive in the dock.  All seems ok. I hide the icon again. Then at some undetermined point Windows just puts the drive back in the recycle bin coverage on its own accord. It's driving me nuts.

I've never tried CloneDVD.  But from just looking on their web site it implies it uses a transcoder.. sort of like DVD Shrink.  Which can be ok if the output size is very close to the input size.

I don't know if there's a "no compression" setting to just get the contents the way MakeMKV does.  When MakeMKV doesn't work I try DVDFab Passkey to decrypt.  Then use other tools on the backup folder.

Plus if MakeMKV works on the disc you can just use the backup button in the toolbar to back up all the files instead of converting to .mkv.

If you want to produce standard dvd output BD Rebuilder will do it. No selectable subtitle support yet though. In fact on the BDRB thread on Doom9 somebody mentions CloneDVD.

BD Rebuilder Beta 0.36.06 was released December 8th.  I've done a couple of runs with the new release.  I didn't find any problems.  See the thread via the link in the first post for program changes/updates/new features.

Find And Run Robot / Re: No EditBox

id really like to see the bad ini file -- might give me a clue as to what went wrong.

there is no reason you should have to lose any of your ini settings -- its almost certainly justone line in that ini that is the culprit.

I don't have it anymore.  I copied the one from my other machine
along with my alias file.  No damage.  Just the frustration of forgetting the solution.
I made a batch to pop up my tips file.  Got to start using it because my memory sucks. :)

The .ini.bak is so close in time that it's not the one with the problem.
Something must have sent size message to the window.  With all the macro thingies it's to be expected. If it happens again I'll just consult my tips file for step by step fix I noted.

No big deal. :)

Find And Run Robot / Re: No EditBox
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 11, 2010, 03:56 PM »
can you show me a screenshot?

try to find your FindAndRunRobot.ini file, which will be in your documents folder somewhere.  exit farr, RENAME it, restart farr.
if that solves it, send me your ini file so i can see what the problem is!

usually no edit box means you dragged the icons too far over to the left, and you just need to drag them back.

Yeah, that rings a bell. But this time there was nothing to grab onto with the mouse.
Deleting the .ini file got the edit line options and help box back.

I'll just copy stuff from the other machine to get my settings.

Edit: I didn't realize that .ini was there. Should have used Everything Search instead of just looking in the program folder.  I'm using a utility WinResize2 that remembers window positions.  I didn't use it on FARR but maybe it discombobulated it. I'm going to add this fix to my tips TreePad file before I forget it. :)

Thanks for fixing me up. I get the shakes if I hit the Pause key and I can't use FARR. :)

Find And Run Robot / No EditBox
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 11, 2010, 03:16 PM »
This happened a few months ago, but I can't remember how I fixed it.  All of a sudden I hit Pause key to open FARR.  No editbox or icons to click to get options. I can't find any options in settings accessed from the tray icon that look like they would turn it on or off.  I just tried reinstall.  Same thing.

I'm running 2.90.02 on Vista64.

The same release is on Win7 32 bit and is still working normally.
Could be I double-clicked another tray icon and hit something by mistake. But I can't find what that might be.

Searched here but editxxx is too common a term to get a hit that isn't 3 years old. :(

Aiyy. Hit something else. Now all I have is a gray rectangle when it comes up. :(

Edit just installed latest beta on top.  No joy.

Edit2: completely uninstalled, deleted folder, installed latest beta.  Same deal. No edit box.

General Software Discussion / Re: PromptHere v. 2.8
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 11, 2010, 01:47 PM »
PromptHere 2.8 Added a Menu Command to set a keyboard hotkey. If the keyboard hotkey is pressed, a prompt is opened with directory set to DesktopDir as set in the .ini file.  Current settings are shown in About box.  Setting the keyboard hotkey is done by typing it in directly in a dialog. Only the more common modifiers are accepted such as control alt etc..  If it shows a single key in the dialog it won't work.  Default is Alt F12 (shown as !F12 in the dialog.)

This way if your hand is off the mouse you don't have to click on an icon to get a prompt only to put your hands back on the keyboard.

When MakeMKV won't do the rip I try this:

http://www.videohelp...tools/DVDFab_Passkey

The betas are released so frequently that it never has a chance to expire. Just a pita to install so frequently.

I think they have spun off(pun intended) a free version. Not sure what the limitations are.  As long as the fully enabled betas are there I see no need to experiment with the lite one.

As a diagnostic you could try my Tray program. It's a 32 bit compiled AutoIt3 script:

http://www.favessoft.com/

I use it all the time on Vista64 and Windows Seven 32 bit. AutoIt3 has a built in function(which I'm sure as SJ says, just calls an API) to open/close the tray.

@techidave:
VLC can play a DVD image (as .iso file) directly, without burning it. Any kind of error that can occur when creating your own DVD's (for example: insufficient menu structure, sync errors) can be easily detected this way without waiting for the rewriteable DVD to be burned. Saves a lot of time and potential embarrassments.

After all errors are eliminated you can burn your mastercopy, that you can give to your coach or give/sell it to staff/students as school promotion...or whatever tickles your fancy.  :)

Not all problems show up in software players.  I've used resize filters that looked perfect on the PC.  Burned a disc and put it in the stand-alone only to get stuttering motion.  I check with a software player first. If it's a process I've used a bunch of times with no problems then I'll usually burn to DVDR.  But if I'm doing anything new I'll burn to an erasable.

Even if it's a DVD9 I'll just shrink it quick to DVD5 and burn on an erasable to check for problems.  Then burn the real DVD9 if it looks ok on the stand-alone.

it was a first cut - I originally considered monitoring the browser window, but there were too many variables for the amount of time I had spare (FYI I modified the monitored URL string to include allmusic.com which should exclude urls for other sites)

glad to hear that it does work for someone though...

It's interesting to see different takes on the same problem. Because I know that AddTime will accept a column of times pasted I didn't even consider regex as an approach. I started looking for a column selection chromium extension. :)
