General Software Discussion / Re: Any virtual printer for .doc or .rtf?
« Last post by Curt on August 16, 2008, 11:32 AM »
Thanks  again, Carol - you really have helped me a lot

IE Tab was the right solution.

I also learnt that my giveaway, Adolix PDF Converter PRO, is the best virtual printer I have for the PDF format. Better than NovaPdf Pro, Visage eXPert PDF Pro, Leedtools e-print, doPDF, and a couple of others I can't remember right now.

Edited:-[
I realize that this praise of Adolix, on the expense of the other virtual printers, was unfair,
because they were not all tested with IE Tab installed.

Post New Requests Here / IDEA: Restart Firefox in safe mode with saved session
« Last post by Curt on August 16, 2008, 08:40 AM »
For Firefox 2 and 3 only:

I am surprised that there seem to be no way to both save session and restart Firefox in safe mode, in one go, and then restart in normal mode, still with the same temporary session. All to make it a lot easier to check if page errors are caused by extensions or not.

Is this within 'your' capabilities, please?

Or can this easily be done already?

Thanks, Carol. I never knew it merely was a question of arguments - I expected safe mode to be a file.

However, Firefox in safe mode is making the exact same errors  :(

If you/anyone care/s, please go to this Danish page, scroll down to the end of the article, and click the printer sign: "Udskriv", to check (and tell) if all of the 'facts box' text is included in the result. As I said, it is all right when I use Maxthon, but when I use Firefox 2, even in safe mode, the end of the text is missing.

The missing part in yellow:

I meant to ask just that question. In the "old days" (last year) I had a shortcut to the safe mode version, but not anymore. And there is no "re-start in safe mode" - so how do I do this?  :tellme:

... the mention of Bulk Image Downloader. Does anyone know of a freeware version that is similar?

I have not heard of anything similar, but I don't *know*. Edited2: (Sure there are other image downloaders (Google!), but B.I.D. is the only one dedicated to certain "encrypted" (?) sites).  However, B.I.D. is ALMOST freeware...
Edited1: But you may use B.I.D as freeware if you insist:
>>Limitations in unregistered version: Max 200 images per batch (60 for imagefap), max 2 instances, max 2 simultaneous downloads, max 2 queued downloads (Queue Manager)<<

B.I.D. is really good at it's primary job, find & download images, but I will have to say that it is disappointing for me to see file names transcribed into Kuşadası.jpg or Laxárstöð.jpg (actual examples) just because the author doesn't think there is a world outside of usa, or maybe doesn't know how to support Unicode.

Notice how advertisements are included in this wordlet from the thread "InstallSafe $7.50" here at DC. Google or Scholar are not mentioned anywhere in the thread - that is, in the ad cleansed version that I normally get to see:

I was testing a lot of different apps and settings, since yesterday, and was just about to post an answer about all my experiences, when suddenly a new thought popped up inside my little brain: >What would it look like if I "printed" the same page from within Maxthon?<

Oh dear, oh dear, the problem is *not* pdf or virtual printers, the problem is (my) Firefox! As usual everything is as it should be, when I use Maxthon.

Of course I will now have to check out which extension/s is/are causing the problem. Hmm... Suddenly I wish I didn't have that many add-ons!

But thanks a lot for all your efforts to help me out!

I guess e-print is what I was asking for. I might try it later, I think. Both Clickbook and Fineprint(+ PdfFactory) is looking very nice. Now, if only I had some money; all three are $49, each...

Thanks a lot to both of you!

I am tired of the poor quality my various virtual pdf printers are giving me; they are not good enough! My favourite news site is always displaying a "facts box" to the right of the article, and just too often this box will be displayed below the main text, (so 1½ page becomes 3 pages, even if I use 'landscape'), when virtually printed, and is even cut off at the end!! Maybe the news site is to blame, or maybe I have purchased crap ware, I don't know. But I do know that the result is unacceptable when you "print" an article, and the end of the important 'facts box' is missing.

So I am remembering the old days at the local library (I didn't have a Internet connection at home), when I would copy and paste the various articles into Word documents, which I could read at home, and then comment or otherwise edit ('after-editing' documents is too difficult with .pdf files, I think; Word is so much easier to use). My reaction is that I no longer want to print to .pdf (or to .emf), so I have been searching for virtual printers, but I have not yet seen any program that will print to .doc or .rtf, which are my preferred formats. Do you know of any of the kind, please?

Edited:
I don't want to edit the entire page. I am of course thinking about the common feature: "print article".

@ Darwin; I am a little eased to notice the "'d" between "I" and "STILL"...  ;)

It really seems that Office 2007 has left the Kingsoft site, though I find it very "funny" (strange) that they haven't updated their site to reflect the situation. But WPS 2007 (aka Kingsoft Office 2007) is yet to be found at several other sites, like C|NET, ZDNET, and others, and this one: http://kingsoft-offi...oftonic.com/download

I'll bet that in a relatively short period of time I will have upgraded to version 2009
- I registered version 2007 just ten minutes ago  8)

Curt mentioned they were offering 300 free full unlock keys for the 2007 version on a first-come first-served basis. I asked for one last Thursday and got it.

- I am very surprised. Of course I asked for a license myself, when I posted the initial info about the giveaway, but I never received any answer! Well, it is not as if I would be missing a office product, I have plenty, but, you know: it was  free...

congrats with your free copy!

its not the jpg that is messed up.

I am sorry for not making the wording unequivocal.
Please, re-read the article, and read every "jpg" as if it said "wps".

Replace jpg with wps:

Change the default icon shown for JPG files

After changing the file association for JPG files in the Folder Options - File Types dialog, Windows Explorer may still show the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer icon for JPG files, rather than the corresponding application's icon. To avoid this, first change the default icon for JPG files via File Types dialog Advanced button, and then associate the files to your preferred program.

In case the Advanced button is missing, click the Restore button. This will associate the image back with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, and the Advanced button would be available now. Now, click Advanced and change the icon for the file-type to your preference. Once done, reset the file-association back to your application.

Another option is to set the defaulticon string by editing the registry directly. Open REGEDIT and navigate to:

[HKEY CLASSES ROOT\jpegfile\DefaultIcon]

Backup the key to a file, as explained here

Example: Set the (default) value to:

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE,8

Restart Windows. If the changes are not reflected in the folder, rebuild the icons using these steps:

    * Right-click Desktop, choose Properties
    * Click the Appearance Tab
    * Click Advanced button
    * Choose Icon from the drop-down list
    * Set it's size to 31 and press OK, OK

Repeat the above steps and set the value back to 32 (defaults)

General Software Discussion / Re: quick photo viewer

@ AxelR - Welcome to DC, and of course also Thanks a lot for your advises!

- I tried the new Fast Picture Viewer today, and it really is fast, but there were far too many JPG images that were not being displayed correctly,
Please turn off the GPU acceleration in the program options

Yes, the blame was entirely on the graphics' acceleration. But now Fast Picture Viewer isn't really any faster than the next fast guy. It is possible (= "feature request") to add quick-button for "Close image, and minimize viewer to tray", please?

Another question, if you will forgive me: Why must I click Ctrl+Del in order to move a file to the bin/basket, instead of merely using Delete? I really don't like that feature when I have bulk-downloaded several hundred images and am to sort them one by one.

- 2007 seems to be on a short temp' pause:

Somehow we ended up talking a lot about beer, at this thread:

In that case, can I come over too?  Pilsners are the best, and so are blonds. :-)
Sometimes I really miss Germany, but Pittsburgh has a German certified brewer, so I am doing better than most. If you are ever this way, you MUST try Penn Pilsner and/or Penn Dark (the two best brews he puts out).  They are just as good as the Euro-beers I had when living in Bitburg.
If you have easy access to Penn Pilsner you need not go anywhere...
- except for a blonde :-)

By the way; Carlsberg and Tuborg are by far the two most sold beers from Denmark,
but by far not the two best... How come marketing is so more important than quality?
Ha ha... not unlike Budweiser in the States and Fosters in Australia - shipped and hyped around the world but far from the best that either country has to offer!
Ha ha... not unlike Budweiser in the States...
I have tasted the original Budweiser from the old Czechoslovakia and it is one of the best beers you can have. At all. And a lot older than Budweiser. But they never thought of protecting their name, so the Americans banded it. You can still have it, of course, but with a different name: Budvar. http://www.budvar.cz/en/index.html
Info: The original Czech Budweiser is in English pronounced 'Boodvaisor'.]
Yes, you're right Curt. I've tried the original Czech Budvar, which is why I specified that I was talking about the US one. I had a Czech flat-mate in university who was APPALLED by American Budweiser and incensed about the name. AFAIK, though, the "King of Beers" was originally brewed by a Czech immigrant to the States and he named it after the Czech version, probably never dreaming that it would become so successful!

- so when I found this picture from Tchechien (:auf Deutsch; what is the Engl. name?) I felt a need to show it to all who likes a genuine beer:

The bigger problem is that we never heard from Jane25 again.

-

I didn't notice it was from April - expected it to be all new.
Otherwise I might had PM'ed you, or probably said nothing.

-

When I re-read my various posts on DC, I can pinpoint when I was stressed - I don't handle stress very well. From time to time that weakness will later on cause me to have to follow up and make an excuse for what I have said. I have done so repeatedly during my membership at DC. Is it too much to encourage you to PM Jane25?

@ deozaan - forgive me for intruding, but I think you overreacted in your post addressed to Jane25. And your final comment, about never wanting to visit her country, was too extreme, to say the least. I mean, you even hurted me, with that remark! I'll bet Jane25 also loves her/his country...

My opinion on Rapidshare is that I will look elsewhere for what I may want to download. I have used their service twice or thrice, but not again. Hey,..wait... what is that: Did I say "service"??!!!

Can you use BC2 sessions in BC3 or will I lose my sessions?
4) BC2 sessions and most settings can be imported into BC3.
-Craig (Scooter) (August 01, 2008, 02:18 PM)

to specify:
BC3 doesn't "replace" BC2, because BC3 installs to \Beyond Compare 3\
so you will just have to export from BC2, when BC3 is installed.

- yes, I meant Group into Categories. None of the programs you listed can do that. Of course Damian's can't do so either, it can really do very little, but that is what it is about. The feature that comes with Vista Start Menu Pro from Dennis Nazarenko, or almost any other start menu replacement: "Group by Type". Only, I don't know if any of them can export the resulting list.
Menu customization.png
For the record: I didn't and I won't recommend Software Database Project. (Damian666 writes some fine programs, but this project seems to go nowhere.) I was merely telling about it - you know, info out into the air, "we are talking about this type of programs, here is one more of almost the same the kind"-info. But come to think of it, this project is so close to being nothing,  that I really shouldn't have told about it in the first place. Sorry!

Edited:
I should have written "Tidy Start Menu Pro" instead of Vista Start Menu Pro [VSM]
- as VSM merely imports these groups from Tidy.
5474
You may have misread the post.
5475
This sure is a software catalogue, only  a different kind of catalogue. Damian666 ('Vistapack Project', and 'Replacer' (now version 1.4), Upxgui, and 'Windows Project Community' (administrator)) from the Netherlands has created a little program, Software Database (version 1.2), just for the same. This is not (yet) for license keys and such, but simply for keeping track of "what kind of programs do I have that can do what, and where are they?" Sounds like it could fill one of my needs...

Software Database Project

Ok, new one, a try to get my software organized and easy to find...
User can create his own categories, and place software in them on the fly.
Its even possible to remove, rename and export files which are stored in the database.

software-database.png

You can run files from within the database, the program also supports the movement from files between different categories.

As I said, a nice try :D
