We appear to be at the mercy of the strategy of organized groups convincing large numbers of ignorant folks to accept things which are then forced on the rest of us...Of course, we are also sometimes those ignorant folks...

And they have "The Right to Read":

When I originally read this I had not appropriately absorbed:

It was also possible to bypass the copyright monitors by installing a modified system kernel. Dan would eventually find out about the free kernels, even entire free operating systems, that had existed around the turn of the century. But not only were they illegal, like debuggers—you could not install one if you had one, without knowing your computer's root password. And neither the FBI nor Microsoft Support would tell you that.

Not even 10 years since publication and already people have been in a position to not (by default anyway) have administrative access on devices they purchase! (e.g. Android devices)

It's terrifying just how much of "The Right to Read" has turned out to be truly prophetic.

Thanks for the response.

One problem I have with these devices is that without root you aren't guaranteed the ability to backup / restore the data / settings generated by the apps on it.  I am thus wary of creating data in this context...

It looks pretty easy to root:

Everyone knows the US is a terrorist police state.

Maybe this should be taken to the soapbox?  I ignore it for a reason.  I might not believe in everything that the US does, and disagree with quite a bit.  But to stand by while such flamebait is posted?  A little too much to ask.  And I don't want to bring such things into the mainstream of DC- doesn't usually work out.

Good point. In the future, I'll try to start a topic in Soap Box and simply refer to that there. I know I can be extreme at times.

So, point taken. I'll try to keep it out of the Living Room.

I picked mine up for KRW 700,000, but I expect that we'll see that drop to much better levels in the next couple of years or so.

If you don't mind me asking, did you ever root your tablet?

No. I only read on it and every now and then play around with deploying some software experiments. I'm more interested in using it than hacking it. I'm getting a couple Raspberry Pis to hack around with, and I already bugger around with my other computers. My tablet is really just a glorified reader for me. The thing I like is that I can put anything I want on it and not fart around with iTunes or some other POS that restricts what I can do.

>:D  I have a Raspberry Pi B Linux Computer in my possession.

Master of Similes was not given without thought.

Congrats~! ;D

:( Still waiting here... Sometime in August I should get them... Ordered 2 as shipping was almost $15, so figured I might as well get free shipping and buy 2.

But I am pretty excited to get them! :D I've already got some plans in the works for it, and am currently going through some of the learning curve for some new programming techniques and whatnot that I'll be using once I get them in August. Crossing fingers and hoping that this all works out...

So, anyone care to disclose what they're planning for their Raspberry Pis?

Living Room / Re: Someone may be maliciously using my domain name
« Last post by Renegade on June 29, 2012, 09:12 PM »
It's called a "joe job".

But you aren't totally powerless...

I had the same problem, and found out through my trials that there's not really anyway to stop them.  They put bogus reply addresses (in many cases, they use an account on your server) so that they can get past some spam checks that don't use something akin to the Sender Policy Frameworkw check to make sure it's actually from that domain.  It can also get your domain blacklisted.  This was several years ago that I had this problem, so I'm not sure if something better has come along in the meantime.

808 is on the right track there. SPF can help you out.

Part of the benefit of SPF is that while you cannot stop someone from doing joe jobs, you *CAN* setup your DNS records with SPF to explicitly state which email servers are permitted to send mail for the domain.

That means that if you wanted to, you could list "mail.donationcoder.com" as a legitimate email sender for your domain, and mouser could then email on your behalf, or let you send email through his email server.

The net effect there is that when someone does a DNS lookup for the SPF record, they can verify that the domain name or IP address is legitimate for email, and then either allow a connection or deny the connection (or allow/disallow email).

This is very important, because it then makes it clear that joe jobs are spam, and that they should be rejected. It also lets people know that they shouldn't blacklist your domain because of a joe job, as you have already explicitly stated that the joe job email server is NOT legitimate.

So, SPF does give you a certain degree of power by letting you state who is and isn't a legitimate email sender. (You still can't stop the joe job, but you CAN say that it is spam.)

@IainB - I don't think I share your optimism there.

  • The raid was carried out illegally by NZ police/military/SS officers (where "SS" means some kind of Special Services/Secret Services);
  • This illegal (QED) act was carried out at the apparently documented behest of the police/SS agencies of a foreign power (USA);

My little rant wasn't really directed at the US criminals. Everyone knows the US is a terrorist police state. My rant was directed at the NZ officials that were responsible for cooperating with the US terrorists, which they are -- just ask any upload site owner that shut down if they were left in terror after MegaUpload was summarily executed. And yes - it was a summary execution. There was no trial and MegaUpload was completely destroyed in a day.

So what does this say about the NZ willingness to cooperate with terrorists? They went along with it all. Well, you can't very well unshoot a gun, and in this case, they simply can't undo the damage that they've done. All at the behest of a bunch of terrorists that are bought and paid for by the media mafia.

It's shameful. And they must be held to account for what they did for there to be justice. The "law" cannot be above the law. (I've ranted in the past about the rule of law, and this is exactly why.)

When you say that if they can do it to him, they can do it to anyone - complete and total 110% agreement there. (Reminds me of "First they came...")

Regarding your point about damages - I am curious to know what will happen there. It's quite impossible to actually repay the actual damage, so punitive damages seem more reasonable. But then again, I am curious to know whether criminal charges will be laid for what was a crime. I think THAT is the real measure of justice here -- i.e. Will the decision makers that were responsible for the crime there be personally held to account for their crimes? (It would be even better to see those responsible on the US side also criminally charged for their part.)

I hope that this is a 1-off travesty for justice in NZ. I really do hope that your optimism is well founded and that my cynicism is unwarranted.

Sort of techie news,  a cautionary tale of sorts  :-\

SWAT team throws flashbangs, raids wrong home due to open WiFi network

But the family in the home was released without any charges as police realized their mistake. Turns out the home had an open WiFi router, and the threats had been made by someone outside the house. Whoops.

http://arstechnica.c...o-open-wifi-network/

Sigh...

It's really hard to get behind the police when they pull crap like that. I have no faith in the police anymore. And my dad was a cop. They've gone from being peace officers to being thugs.

Quite frankly, the people responsible for breaking into that house and assaulting those people (what is a flashbang otherwise?) should be criminally charged or face severe discipline for complete incompetence. There's simply too much incompetence and malice in law enforcement now.

Like seriously? An open network? Justification? Huh?

Cripes... I should take my laptop or tablet or phone and run around the neighbourhood to see how many "victims" there are there... I bet it wouldn't take 15 minutes to find one.

Simply being a technotard isn't a crime and doesn't warrant grenades being thrown into your house.

This stuff just sets me off... I should just shut up because it happens all the time... non-stop...

Even though I'm not an expert in the matter, this seems like the kind of stuff that exists already. Looks like an outgoing firewall which allows only VPN packets out would solve it. However, you would have to disable it when connecting at browser-based authentication site.

I think I saw something on Torrent Freak about this, but I'm tired and need to get some sleep... Maybe someone can follow up...

Give the gift of F*CK!

Hey... we're all jaded and sometimes you just don't give a flying f*ck... but wouldn't it be nice if you could? Now you can give a flying f*ck to a friend or loved one. This fine r/c helicopter is in the form of a giant hovering F*CK. It has two-channel control meaning it is always moving forward slowly. You control the hover and right and left turns. It's really a genuine gift from the heart... Rather than telling someone you don't care a rats ass about them, you can let them know you respect them enough to give a flying f*ck. Awww... We're tearing up right about now.

Like seriously, who wouldn't love to have a flying FUCK? :P

I'd still love to see someone manufacture a large-format tablet -- something with a 8.5 x 14 inch screen or higher.

That puts it pretty much in the specialty area, so I wouldn't expect that anytime soon.

Mind you, it would be easier to read on that... (I read a lot of PDFs on my tablet.)

Sigh... Maybe I'm being cynical, but...

It doesn't matter. It's all completely irrelevant.

They completely destroyed Megaupload. It's gone. It will NEVER recover. Other sites have been shutting down in mass numbers because they're all scared to shit of the same thing happening to them. Megaupload was the first summary execution.

Now, just ask yourself if the CRIMINALS that raided his house will be held to account for their CRIMES.

Ummm... No.

They will NEVER be prosecuted for their CRIMES. They are immune to prosecution. They are above the law.

What do you do with a CRIMINAL government/system?

And THAT, my friends, is why the US of A has the second amendment.

(This crap just sets me off...)

I can get an older Galaxy S for around $200 though. I might window shop a little longer to give some of the newer ones a chance to come down in price.

A friend of mine has both an S and S II, and loves the S II, but isn't very fond of the S. But, he's comparing the S to the S II, so... I was playing around with the S II and it was just spectacular. Not too sure about the S as I never really looked at it. If it's half as good as the S II, then it'll still be a nice phone.

Well, if I might be so crass... Just bought 3 bottles of Schmirnoff. Far from Grey Goose and whatnot, but decently priced (here anyways). Some of the cheaper vodkas destroy your head in the morning. Schmirnoff seems pretty good at avoiding that. Far better priced than Absolut, which is very overrated anyways. (Still good, but not all THAT good.)

Still, I can't really afford to drink the way I'd like to... But then again, I think few people actually can~! ;D :P

No real recommendations, but if you're in the US, phones are significantly cheaper than other places. Also, you might want to check out used phones as you're likely to be able to pick up a good one for far below the going rate for most new phones.

If you want an ICS capable phone, that's going to be a newer one though. Not sure if you'll be able to get that on a lower budget though. Being in the US will help there.

For cameras, if you see anything with BSI in it, that's a major plus. (Back Side Imaging - makes pictures MUCH clearer than others. Samsung proprietary camera sensor.)

I know exactly what he's talking about when he goes on about "faggot". When I was a kid, I had NO clue about any of that stuff, and the 2 most common insults were "fag/faggot" and "spaz". I had no association there with anything other than the word itself.

It reminds me of a South Park episode where the kids start calling a bunch of bikers (bikies) fags. ( http://en.wikipedia....e_F_Word_(South_Park) )

But I have a violent allergy to groups co-opting words for their own private use and trying to restrict the use of words to specific meanings.

On a related tangent, the word "slut" used to mean nothing more than "a little girl". There's an old poem that starts:

Mary, Mary, what a slut.
What a little slut.
Mary, Mary, what a slut.
etc. etc.

I forget the rest.

But god forbid you say that word now. Never mind that the current meaning isn't what it was back then. Cripes...
