General Software Discussion / Re: Request: Deepdream frontend.
« Last post by mouser on October 01, 2015, 06:29 PM »
I just read through the DeepStyle paper -- its similar but different -- it's computing separate representations of an image's content features and "style" (a bit handwavey, but correlations in texture and color), and then generating (by optimizing a loss function) a novel of image that comes close to having the "content" of the one image and the "style" of another.

I haven't read the DeepDream papers, but essentially I believe they are using object recognition data to hallucinate/exaggerate features that are "perceived" (by algorithm but not by human cognition) in an image.

This is a long shot, but here goes..

I live in a 1929 five-story brick condominium.  Each halloween i get the idea to turn one of the photos i've taken of the building into a haunted house image and frame it and sneak it up in the lobby for fun -- but I just don't have the skills for it.

I found a couple of nice photoshop tutorials (the latter of which has a great download zip with helper resources).

What they do:

Here's a thumbnail of the original image I have (its aprox. 4200x2750 RAW; it looks very dark here but the RAW format has full detail to make it bright):
Screenshot - 9_29_2015 , 8_28_45 PM.png

And for fun here's a nice HDR image I made from the raw image to celebrate winter:

The full RAW image (16mb) can be downloaded: here.

I can't offer much by way of compensation but I could certainly offer *one* person $50 if the result was good enough that i used it -- i know it's not much.. but if you are interested in making a serious attempt, maybe contact me first or post here so that we don't have multiple folks expecting to be compensated.

ill look into it -- no reason it should be listing items with > 1% cpu, but it may be getting confused with multiple process of same name..

All 3 were fantastic games.  Sniper Elite 1 may be too old to hold up well against modern games, but SE2 and SE3 are very playable -- and were never about cutting edge graphics.

For those with friends, SEv3 is a fantastic 2 player cooperative experience (two players on 2 dif computers).

I'm getting the same error, must be an issue with Imageshack as of today.. I'll look into it.

EDIT: Looks like the ImageShack website is currently down. Should be back up soon.

Living Room / How to make a sandwich from scratch
« Last post by mouser on September 26, 2015, 04:21 PM »
This is from a youtube series called "How to Make Everything", it shows a guy spending 6 months and $1500 to make a sandwich from scratch (growing and harvesting vegetables and grains, making cheese, pickling cucumbers, butchering a chicken, etc.):

As someone who has done a fair amount of wood work, this hits home for me -- it's hard to justify making most things yourself -- the time and money dwarf what it would take to buy something new or used.  There is a lot to be said for learning the skill to make things yourself, but be prepared for a lot of inefficient work.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Clipboard Help and Spell - New Name?

Considering all of the good ideas here, i think the consensus wisdom is not to try changing the name, except perhaps to focus on the acronym CHS rather than the longer name.

Living Room / The business of web ads - fraudulent at its core
« Last post by mouser on September 24, 2015, 02:44 PM »
Long article about the business of web ads, the fraud involved, and the consequences:

“I can think of nothing that has done more harm to the Internet than ad tech,” says Bob Hoffman, a veteran ad executive, industry critic, and author of the blog the Ad Contrarian. “It interferes with everything we try to do on the Web. It has cheapened and debased advertising and spawned criminal empires... About 18 months ago, he set to figuring out how much of his inventory—ad spaces for sale—was fake. The answer mortified him: “Two-thirds was either fraud or suspicious,” he says.
