The metadata inside of some image formats contains a thumbnail (or stamp). This information is entirely separate and distinct from the actual image itself, but is formed when the photograph is taken.

Not all editors deal with stamps (thumbnails) or not all editors deal with them properly.

When I wrote the Super Simple Photo Resizer, I came across this issue, and instead of simply not dealing with it, in at least some case (IIRC) I delete the stamp/thumbnail from the image file entirely. There are very good reasons to do this...

Imagine you're at home, getting out of the shower, and your spouse snaps a photo of you. While you don't want to post full frontal nudity of yourself, perhaps the facial expression is really funny, and you want to share that. So, you crop the photo and email or upload it...

Now, if the software didn't erase the stamp, you've just sent that original stamp of your naked body around. Not good. And probably not what you'd intended to do.

Anyways, that's a bit long for the simple explanation. -- Stamps and image data are not the same.

Having lived in non-English speaking countries and speaking more than just English for quite some time, I've basically concluded that the English-speaking world is much less tolerant of language issues.

There's even an entire album named after this with a title-track song (NSFW):

It just illustrates a difference in attitudes in different places.

Very good advice re use of full-disc encryption, open (insecure) wi-fi, etc. from falkvinge.net
What to do if prosecuted for sharing culture - stfu

Please, anyone, feel free to scream on my behalf.

Important information (also on falkvinge.net) for anyone in the UK using encryption, or NOT even using encryption: http://falkvinge.net...ronomical-noise-too/

In summary, if you're in the UK and have "random" noise files on your system (which could be an encrypted volume or a genuine file containing random data) you could receive a minimum of 2 years prison sentence - simply because you can't provide the (nonexistent) key to decrypt the random data file.

Welcome to the UK, where we are all guilty until proven innocent. Nice.

Please, anyone, feel free to scream on my behalf. Again.

Here's an interesting case:

Now, I've copied the contents of one of the above posts into a text file, and encrypted it with a single word. The encryption is ZIP encryption.

According to the law, anyone in the UK that downloads it could go to prison for merely having it and not being able to open it.

But... I (almost) told you what was in the file, and it's ZIP encrypted, which is defeated when you know the contents of 1 file in an archive. Also, being a single word, a dictionary attack would crack it very quickly.

I wonder if the law has any requirement for the thugs/criminals/government to attempt to get the file contents before charging someone who cannot provide the password/key?

This is completely so bizarre...

I just want to scream.

Developer's Corner / Looking for Installer Recommendations
« Last post by Renegade on July 15, 2012, 06:44 AM »
I'm looking for new/better/easier/cooler ways to package an installer/application.

The application is a Mono/GTK# program, and runs cross platform out of the box.

However, I'm not really all that familiar with OS X/Linux/cross platform installers. So, I'm wondering if anyone can recommend anything that they've used and like.

Any recommendations?

Well, I must admit, that my next computer will be 2 Raspberry Pis. But I'm not sure if that really qualifies as it's not in the voting there, and I really only want them for development, and they're not really "traditional" computers. Kind of an odd situation.

And too bad for Emperor Palpatine disappearing there... It was a cool clip. :)

Before you get to carried away, consider Roz Savage. She solo rowed across the Atlantic, then did the Pacific, and then the Indian Oceans! That total's over 10,000 miles and more then a year alone in her boat. I followed her across the Pacific and Indian rows, as she did a weekly Podcast via Sat Phone with Leo LaPorte.

Here's a Youtube video

and here's her website www.RozSavage.com

I'll leave my previous comments about being a porn star alone... ;)

Yeah. She's a trooper and a half. Hats off! That takes a truckload of, well, a lot. I sure as hell wouldn't want to try.

Developer's Corner / Vala - A C#-Like Language for GNOME
« Last post by Renegade on July 11, 2012, 08:26 PM »
While banging my head against the wall trying to figure out how to get RESX to work with GTK#, I stumbled across this:

https://live.gnome.org/Vala
https://live.gnome.o...ForCSharpProgrammers

Vala is a new programming language that aims to bring modern programming language features to GNOME developers without imposing any additional runtime requirements and without using a different ABI compared to applications and libraries written in C.

Looks very interesting, and almost identical to C#.

Anyways, it's worth having a brief glance at for anyone interested in new languages and all that jazz.

"Extract Text and Preserve Layout" - That is going to be a seriously cool feature. I've NEVER seen a PDF converted to a DOC that has been remotely sane. Well, for PDFs that are complex beyond "hello world" anyways.

And after a quick test for extracting text, it seems to do a better job than Acrobat. The main issues seem to be line breaks, but that certainly beats the horrors that other conversions inflict.

« Last post by Renegade on July 10, 2012, 08:25 AM »
Avoid any hair pulling ... Consider the demographic ... And then cater to the lowest common denominator...

In keeping with the above theme...

For those that like to hike in the woods, how about an app that will scare bears away. Don't know what it would have to sound like, but I've asked around and haven't heard of one.

I really think he's on to something. Face it coming up with a game changing, useful, functional application is fraught with complications and subjectivity. Because they really have to do something very specific, very well, and in a fashion that doesn't annoy and/or confuse users with varying to zero skill levels. However... Small toys, that will get a few laughs at parties ... Are fairly easy to get people to throw a buck at. Ya know?

Well, for something that scares bears, I think that's an specific idea to ditch if serious, but a comic one can work very well.

There are simply too many limitations on mobile devices, and it's just not possible to do. The first thing, which kills the deal, is the audio speaker quality. They're simply too poor. You need a very wide dynamic range to effectively reproduce sound. Also, the power requirements would be too large for a mobile device. (I'm thinking about the 192 kHz post by 40hz that I have yet to read [I need to schedule several hours to give it proper attention], but I can't see how it would be applicable in any way [from my distant recall from a very quick skimming] as the core considerations here are for bear hearing and dynamic range, and not sampling rates.)

But +1 for everything else StoicJoker said there.

A comic version of a "Bear Scare" app could work very well. Not all apps need to be "rational" or "functional".

I posted here:

About starting some new cross platform development with C#, Mono, and GTK#. I'm using Frackin' Reserve as my "Hello World" project there.

I've also made it available on Git Hub here:

https://github.com/R...inds/Frackin-Reserve

Or what's finished & committed so far. Been a bit busy lately, so I haven't finished it. Just working out some platform specific things at the moment. Having a hell of a time trying to figure out how to open an instance of Finder on a Mac right now... (Because they just work ;) Right. ) It's only for an error check, but still a good part of the learning process.

Here's the state of the program available now at Git Hub:

Screen shot 2012-07-10 at 12.38.43 PM.png

As you can see, it's running beautifully on OS X now.

Here's the best part... I can compile it on Windows, and run it on Linux and Mac. :D Compile once. Run everywhere. (Some people were saying about HTML5 and JavaScript? :P )

General Software Discussion / Re: Visual Basic or Visual C++
« Last post by Renegade on July 08, 2012, 11:22 AM »
I kind of wonder about those charts. C? Really? Yeah, it's great for speed and all, but it's slow to program in, and really only good for low-level things now. Building a GUI in C is, well, would masochistic be a good description?

I'm just a bit surprised that C is #1 there. I can't figure out how that works. Where do they get their data from?

Moreover, what does it say about the kinds of projects that people are working on? THAT seems like the real question to me.

Post New Requests Here / Re: Create a file list from multiple folders
« Last post by Renegade on July 08, 2012, 11:14 AM »
Far less sophisticated, but a quick and easy hack for a recursive text dump of a directory and files:

http://renegademinds...abid/56/Default.aspx

You'd need a separate batch file for each case and change the dir command in each:

@dir %1 /A-shd /S /on /b > c:\dirListing.txt         ** For sorted by Name with no Folders or System/Hidden files
@dir %1 /A-shd /S /od /tc /b > c:\dirListing.txt    ** For sorted by Creation Date with no Folders or System/Hidden
@dir %1 /A-shd /S /od /tw /b > c:\dirListing.txt    ** For sorted by Last Written, (Modified), with no Folders or System/Hidden

Use /o-n or /o-d to reverse the sort order.

I never sort as the default is fine for what I need, but thanks for that!

I can't filter ?

I have too many hard drives and some 2 Tb.

You just right-click on a folder, so you don't need to do EVERYTHING. Cripes... that would take forever... :(

Renegade thanks for the application email avenger. I was looking for the application.

It's a bit dated now. :( Likely doesn't work as well as when I wrote it.
