N.A.N.Y. 2016 / Idea Thread for NANY 2016
« Last post by mouser on October 09, 2015, 11:07 AM »
If anyone has any ideas to suggest for NANY 2016, or collaborations they want to work on, etc. -- feel free to use this thread (or start a new one starting with NANY2016 idea).
Remember that NANY ideas should typically be small in scope -- not year long projects.

N.A.N.Y. 2016 / N.A.N.Y. 2016 Announcement
« Last post by mouser on October 09, 2015, 11:01 AM »
Since 2007 we have held an annual event that we call NANY (New Apps for the New Year), where we ask the coders who hang out on DonationCoder to create some new piece of free software and share it with the world on January 1st of the new year.

NANY is really the funnest thing we do on this site, and it's one of the few times we can all play together.  There are no winners or losers, it's simply a celebration of programming and creating new software and sharing it with the world.  You can target any operating system (desktop or mobile) or even make a web-based tool.  It can be a game, utility, large application, whatever.  DC takes makes no claim on your software, it's just an event to encourage you to share a creation with others.  Best of all, everyone who participates gets a free commemorative coffee mug.

General Software Discussion / MOVED: no user interface ???

Just for the record I had the same feeling as wraith (and renegade of all people) that it was more a basement/political post than a silly humor post and didn't belong here -- and then i didn't understand the replies to the question about it being in the wrong thread.
5409
Aero settings shouldn't affect that -- you should be able to interact with it and see it as a normal window.

Great -- and thanks for sharing the culprit/solution -- that will help others.
Now I will move this thread to the URL Snooper section of the forum, as Curt suggested.
5411
PBOL can already be used as a normal undocked window.
You can turn off on-top behavior from general options.

I just installed Url Snooper on a windows 10 laptop and it worked flawlessly.

URL Snooper should run fine on windows 10.. But let me go check to make sure.

I'm nore sure why the UI wouldn't show up either way.. Strange!

Perhaps try rebooting?

The Google Webmaster Tools say nothing?

no not really. they i did check the sitemap, and it is listing recent pages, and it does show as being parsed by google without errors.  google webmaster tools shows that they have "decided" not to index most of the pages in the sitemap, though it doesn't say why. welcome to google world.
5415
and i should note that google tends to index dc forum posts VERY quickly -- usually within the hour.

at least they used to -- i did some searches for posts from today and can't find them.

why isn't google indexing our pages quickly now.. i have no idea. is there a way to find out? doesn't appear so. is there someone to ask? doesn't appear so.  what do we do? nothing. just wait for the gods of google to decide who they want to favor or disfavor as usual.

1. The new search is a disaster. I think it was one of the days I was working on the Getting Things Done thread and for the life of me I couldn't get it to come up in the *new* DC search. It seems to do "OR" searches so I'd get all threads for "getting", and "Things" and "Done".
The old board had a pretty good hand optimized search by someone from DC, and Mouser hasn't had time / figured out how to port it over.

im not convinced it's a disaster -- it has some pros and cons.

having said that i think i will try to port over the old custom search so we can compare.

Some discussion threads in the main DCF forum being unavailable in Wayback beyond a certain point due to robots.txt blocking. I had presumed this could be the result of deliberate site blocking of certain strings/posts by admins.

the only blocking we do in robots.txt is to block redundant non-canonical versions of pages -- ie the mobile versions of pages where duplicate content is available on another, indexed page.

the only other blocking that should take place is in the basement area (since you must sign up to view those pages).

other than that we try very hard (with custom constantly updated site map) to ensure that google and other indexes can index everything on dc as fast as possible.  we impose no limits on indexing speed, etc. the more the better.  and i should note that google tends to index dc forum posts VERY quickly -- usually within the hour.

we welcome the wayback machine to index everything :)

Living Room / Re: What books are you reading?

Just read "The Golden Ticket: P, NP, and the Search for the Impossible", by Lance Fortnow 2013

It's a book that discusses the P vs NP problem -- a very important problem in computer science and mathematics, having to do with how easy or hard it is to solve certain algorithmic problems (see wikipedia page here)..

I disliked the book thoroughly -- felt very lazy and unserious to me.  Early on the author blithely says he chooses not to define the problem of P vs NP and then spends 20 or 30 pages making up fiction about how cool it would be in a world where P = NP.  Just a lot of silly and very little substance.  I expected more and better historical background.

app if you upload a zip with your object/source images as individual files, they could be added to the psd by stoic (or me for that matter).

Hay, I understand that IRL it's -(pardon the pun)- your cross to bear ... I just think is really sad that some people can't get over themselves for the 8 seconds it takes to recognize a landmark that has been incorporated into a theme.

i hear ya.  i have completely committed to not being "offended" by stuff. when people tell me about some verbal "gaffe" someone makes and expect me to laugh or heap scorn with them i explain to them that i'm not playing that game.  i refuse to get offended by things that have no effect on me.

with that said -- clearly we live in a world where people are just dying to find things to be offended about -- and in a situation like this, where this is purely being done to amuse and entertain, and where we aren't talking about some core personal belief that has to be self-censored..  it's not worth upsetting people about.  learning to choose your battles is one of the most valuable lessons i've learned about being in a building full of people with different viewpoints.

and also.. personally i think a pirate ship would look spookier  ;D
