Found Deals and Discounts / ShellLess file manager
« Last post by Curt on September 06, 2008, 04:09 AM »
One may speculate on the name of today's $30 giveaway, ShellLess, and wonder about why we (= "I") never've heard of this before when we once talked so much about Explorer replacement programs. Because this is just what today's giveaway is about, replacing Explorer. I guess the name, ShellLess, is because it may be using Explorer in the same way Quizo does, but I don't KNOW. I have tested it for half an hour, and have nothing bad to say about it. It is nice and easy, and Well-known from the beginning. An extended Explorer, like Quizo, you might say - only, some features have been added, and   compared to Quizo   some features are missing.

http://www.giveawayo.../shellless-explorer/

Nowadays it becomes harder and harder to keep track of the files you have stored on your computer for the sole reason that the HDD capacity has increased considerably. It is obvious that you not only need time to find what you are looking for but also a lot of patience. In this type of situations, ShellLess comes to the rescue.

This simple yet powerful application is perfect for browsing the files on your compute. With its tabbed browsing feature, you can easily switch between different common operations and keep track of multiple files.

ShellLess.gif

Some of the features:

Tabbed Multi-Panel Interface
Tabbed Multi-panels that allow you to easily drag and drop files from one location to another. This feature comes in handy when you need to move files from one place to several folders. There is no limit to the number of panels you can open so all you have to do is be sure you don't get confused.

Navigation Bar
The vista-like navigation bar is very easy to control, which gives the user fast access to parent folders of current browse path. Simply click on the button to navigate to that parent folder.

MRU/MFU Folder List
ShellLess Explorer remembers the files and folders that you have visited so that you can access them again in case you have forgotten their exact location. This can prove to be useful especially if you are moving files from one location to another or if you have closed the application by mistake.

Quick File Finder/Filter
Too many files to find what you want ? Can't remember full name of the file? Just type the keyword in the folder view and get all files that matches your keywords in no time at all.

Undo List For File Operation
Have you ever done something by accident and couldn't undo it? Well, with ShellLess you will no longer have that problem. It has the ability to undo any action that you have performed and that way you can never delete or misplace files or folders by mistake. You can easily select the action you have performed and undo it. It's that simple.

To-do File Cart
At some point all of us wanted to move files from one location to another but got so lost in browsing through files. With Todo Cart this will never happen again because you can simply drag and drop files that you want to work with into the cart area and then you can use it whenever you desire, regardless of your current browsing location.

Favorite Bar
Favorite Bar allows you to add your common places to favorite bar. With Favorite Bar you'll never click by click to navigate to the deep folders.
You can add folder of the tab to Favorite Bar via Right-click Menu of the tab.

History Record
All files and folders you have recently accessed are organized by day.
With this feature you can easyly review what you had accessed a few days ago

General Software Discussion / Duplicate Cleaner (gratis)
« Last post by Curt on September 05, 2008, 06:33 PM »
Freewaregenius is telling about Duplicate Cleaner, and I as far as I can see this programs has not been mentioned at DC before:

Edited:
Compatibility: Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista

http://www.digitalvo...cano.co.uk/dupe.html
There are three main reasons why I like this program:

   1. Different methods: lets you search for duplicates using a number of different methods. It can look at the file content (by calculating its unique CRC value), looking at file names, file size, file date, or any combination of these (e.g. matching both file name and size).
   2. Reads audio tags: the program is able to detect music file duplicates by reading audio tags.
   3. Managing the results list: offers a number of excellent options for what to do with the results after they are found, including smart criteria for selecting and deleting dupes (including user-defined patterns), viewing or opening any file in the results list, exporting and importing results, the option to create hard links, etc. In fact it is the versatility of what you can do after you get your list of dupes that attracts me to this folder

What to search for: you can specify which filetypes to scan for (for example entering *.zip;*.exe will look for zip files and executables only; note that a semicolon not a comma is used in the syntax). The program provides 6 presets: image/picture files, music data, movies, text files, office documents, and "everything". You can also specify filters for minimum and maximum file sizes to take into consideration.

(...)(...)(...)(...)

Creating hard links: this is an option if you are running Windows 2000, XP, or Vista on an NTFS file system.

(...)(...)(...)(...)

Wish list:

    * To specify "or" in the search criteria: currently, you can require results to meet multiple search criteria (e.g. same size and same name both); it would be nice to be able to specify "or" criteria (e.g. same size ro same name).
    * To specify "excluding" in the user-defined selection assistant: e.g. select dupes in all folders except for the following. Currently, you are only able to set the path to select dupes from.

The verdict: there are a number of free programs that detect duplicate files, but they mostly seem to focus on getting reliable and/or quick results and lag behind in terms of the tools to manage results after your get them.Where I think this program really distinguishes itself is in what you can do with your duplicate results and its general ease of use and user-friendly interface. I recommend it highly.

General Software Discussion / Re: Xobni beta - Outlook Mail indexer and organizer
« Last post by Curt on September 05, 2008, 05:42 PM »
Xobni was updated in June, quite a major update, including integration with LinkedIn. In July they decided to include integration with Facebook; but only testers can try it at the moment. During the summer they also hired new staff. I don't think the company is at sleep; I believe Xobni to be heading fast forward! I am on their mailing list because they are planning to include various e-mail clients other than Outlook, including my Thunderbird. :-)

But I don't know if they've solved the issue causing Outlook not to exit properly.

- I am glad to hear that FilZip is working well for you, ajp. Long time ago I decided not to try it because the author himself said it had some bugs, and that development had stopped:

I did not have the spare time to work on Filzip as much as I wanted to for the last years. I have received a lot of emails containing requests for new features that some of you want to have, and most of the time I could not even answer the emails, not to mention implementing these requests. Filzip fell behind its competitors and bugs did not get fixed.

I realized that by typing this post I was creating a kind of jubilee:

- yes, I grabbed the PhotoCollage thingy, but there isn't much wonder in such a share studio..., so to speak. The Wondershare will not save the image any larger than 800x600 pixels!!!

IDFramer however is something to talk about:

Frame_ShowMeTheWay_Familieturens volleyball.jpg

I've got a load of frames - just png's, will work with any programme! You can get free frames all over the net.

I have never before taken interest in this subject, so I have a lot to learn about this, as well...
Would you name some addresses, please, where to find these frames, to get me started?

General Software Discussion / What's the best image-"framer"?
« Last post by Curt on September 05, 2008, 07:02 AM »
I have a minor collection of pictures / photos that I want to frame, hoping it would make them look even better  as wallpapers on my XP's desktop,  but I am having serious troubles finding the right application to do so.  The best freeware version I so far have found is the fine PhotoScape, but the number of different frames it can offer  is not enough for me; the frames are there, all right, but there are too few, and they are too simple, I think. So I was wondering if maybe 'you' know something about this subject   and will tell what "framer" you can recommend, please?

It MUST offer to save as .JPG > 100% quality, original dimensions

I know Photoshop can do all I want, but I really don't have that kind of money
- so Freeware or cheap-priced-ware applications are preferred, please!

One example:

The family playing volleyball. Nice, if you know the people, but in general a little boring:

Familieturens volleyball.jpg

This frame may be an improvement to the picture, but the frame itself is not quite good enough, I think; there should be no white space inside the frame:

Familieturens volleyball.jpg

I am of course not just looking for a frame for this picture
- so, please  tell  what is The Best 'framer'?  :tellme: (that I can afford)?

-> Quote: "COMING SOON: (...) Denmark (...)" Yes! We didn't get the offer the first time, but our time has finally come. This is really good news! I have Ultimate 2007 TRIAL installed, and I like it! Normally I am running Office 2003 Student/Teacher (extended with Access to equal (and list as) the Office Standard), and it will be so good to get the updated big brother.

However, I might be rejoicing to soon, because only time will tell if I can update my 2003 into this $60 version of 2007, as I no longer am eligible.  :-\

I have by the way one complaint against Office 2007: The Office Image/Picture Manager has not been updated at all. It is an exact copy of version 2003, except for the ©-year.

I tried to print this page that we are posting at right now, and you are right; the right margin is being cut off. However, I am on my way to bed (3 at night around here!), so I am not sure if the error is on Polestar only, or if Firefox has a part in it, too, but I don't have the time to test it further.

* INITIAL RELEASE *

I have not yet tried it.
5392
NovaPDF's editing capabilities (or lack thereof). Hope this is added in the future - it's a great feature!
We know it's a great feature, if only it wouldn't be that difficult to implement.

I don't think it should be all implemented, but maybe made available as (stand-alone?) add-ons or whatever, otherwise I would expect the virtual printer to become much too slow. But I would certainly want my virtual printer to have a button named EDIT - and when clicked it would ask if I want to edit the file as a pdf or rtf or doc or or or..., or something.

... Also, some people can be uncomfortable when talking using a videocam, in the sense that they can be in pajamas at home, in underwear, or doing those little things everyone does at home, and it's embarrassing for them to let others see them like that.

Forgive me if I am too much OFF the thread's subject, but Lashiec's comment made me think of a Danish commercial (in English). The company JPS started out many years ago, making men's underwear only. Later they also added a minor line for women, but in general their ads addresses men only in a unisex'ed way (knowing that any female partners also will have a say).
This .WMV may be rated as NSFW (not suitable boobsfree.gif for work) in the USA:

Thanks a lot for updating so fast!

You already have given EUP the feature to hide to sys-tray, which is really cool. Do you think it will be possible for you to also change EUP from the new "Start Minimized to Taskbar" into "Start Minmized to Sys-Tray" instead??

---

Regarding Diacrit. I am going to write the author of Diacrit once more. This time to ask for option to start with favourite language view. As for now it will always start in a useless ehh... neutral  mode, forcing the user to first click "language", and then to scroll to the preferred language. Otherwise I am quite happy with  Diacrit. It is not placed in Start, but on the addressbar of my Firefox, together with BabelMap, because I am used to using them at the Internet only.

The biggest difference between Diacrit and EUP may be that Diacrit already "has" all characters and signs if they are installed on the user's PC.

LangPad is similar, but does not allow customization at all. Character sets must be purchased individually. I don't even think it does Unicode. http://www.langpad.com/

LangPad is containing 10 European language characters in the one and same common version, but the text on the homepage is ambiguous, making you think there may be lot of versions. This common version however merely offers a total of 90 characters, and this is not a lot - see screenshot. What is utterly totally weird about this program is that it literally supports WordPad and NotePad... Did you get it? It doesn't support Word, or your Internet browser, or anything else... - it doesn't even support your clipboard!!!??? This is so strange that I am suspecting the feature may be disabled in my trial copy, but neither the homepage or the help file say so. I simply cannot understand the author's attitude on this mis-feature, this "lack of the obvious".

LangPad is $7

Hello Eric

Thanks a lot for writing Easy Unicode Paster, I really like it a lot!

I would very much like you to add feature to Start Minimized to Tray, if possible, please.

I should tell that I wrote the author of Diacrit yesterday, and he immediately updated his program and added a decimal and hexadecimal tooltip to each button!

Diacrit is £10 (approx US$19 or €13)

I am a little too tired to do it right now - it is midnight around here, but I will try tomorrow. At the moment I am happy with version 1.2 - see new screenshot. However, 1.2 or 1.3; they do not accept Start Minimized. Will you consider to add such feature, so I can have it start silently with Windows, please?

Did you notice that it is impossible to Alt+PrntScr -capture the window? Not that it matters.
