Living Room / Re: What slows Windows down? See for yourself....
« Last post by Carol Haynes on September 12, 2006, 04:27 AM »
vmware runs a bunch of stuff on system startup, like the license service, NAT service, and some mount stuff...

Yes I know - I have VMWare workstation installed and a heck of a lot of stuff is running constantly even when you aren't using VMWare at all. Trouble is it is not at all obvious how to disable a lot of it (like networking stuff) without screwing up the installation or the rest of my system. It would be nice if you could just set serices etc. to manual and only start them when you need them. Anyone any ideas?

However I still like VMWare better than MS Virtual PC (which is now free) - but that doesn't seem to load anything at startup. Maybe I'll give MS VPC another go.

The other thing in that list that is annoying are IM clients - I dropped Miranda a while back because everytime I upgraded it forgot all my contacts and settings (which was a right royal PITA) but now I have ICQ, MSN and Yahoo loading at startup which really clobbers things. Anyone know of any other light multi-IM clients that are a bit more user friendly than Miranda?

LOL - another shot in the arm for Norton ;)

Quite surprised by VMWare though.

Thanks to everyone who submitted an entry - it was fascinating watching things develop and there were some really great ideas. Win or not you all deserve a big pat on the back. Well done Mouser too for the inspiration ;)

Neat ... thanks

You've never used AceText, so you'll have to trust me on the fact that it's light, fast and efficient.  The rss reading/creation integrates elegantly into it without any negative impact on the application.  Rather than being dedicated new features, they're mere extensions of the technology already present in the application.

I can second that - it is light and quick (though I don't use it for RSS etc - I hadn't even noticed it could do that ;))

Don't know the answer but I would be interested too ...

Another useful tool would be to remove duplicate copies of emails.

You just need to sign up for WindowsSecrets Newsletters (which are pretty good reading anyway).

Go to: http://WindowsSecrets.com to sign up or click the image for an explanation.

Why is it useful? What is wrong with stopping it from the Task Manager ?

The football isn't quite as satisfying as they all seem to fall over a lot - cute they way they get up again though.

A bit short but I quite like Thor takes up skateboarding ;)

Developer's Corner / Re: Turbo C and Turbo Pascal are back!!
« Last post by Carol Haynes on September 06, 2006, 03:56 AM »
Yes - having tried a number of them they all come with the standard Borland 2006 IDE which was presumably written using the .NET framework etc. and the docoumentation is the standard Borland documentation - I can't find any reference to Turbo editions in it any where which is going to make it a bit difficult to use (I'd guess anyway).

Ahem - actually the process for getting a license and the software is pretty similar to DC !

By the way - if anyone is installing a Turbo Express product there is an error in on of the prerequisite filenames !!

You have to install MSXML 4 SP2 before a Turbo product. The file in the prequ ZIP file is called MSXML.msi. You need to rename it to MSXML4.msi for it to work properly (otherwise the installation bombs with an error). Id guess this is an MS issue rather than Borland but you'd think they would check!

Actually I was impressed with the speed of their servers (given the hammering they are likely to be taking at the moment). They are huge files and my downloads took on average about 12-15 minutes per file. The only one that caused problems was C++ - the HTTP version seemed to collapse after about 14Mb but the FTP version worked fine.

I already have a Borland Registration (having gone through the hoops previously) so all I did was enter my email address and password and then it was simplicity - click on the product, confirm the email address (click), and a reg. file was sent (just save it in your user profile folder C:\Documents and Settings\username) and click on the two downloads.

Note if you want to download more than one product the prerequisite zip file is the same for all Turbos.

I am not quite sure why you need to install .Net for the non-.Net products though.

I love the action of the orange one - it has a really natural movement and I especially like the flip up onto the feet from the back.

Actually if you put a fully qualified address in the filename it will save the file where you want without any navigation - so CopyPath to set a detination in advance does the job quite nicely (if that is what you want). I must say though that for regular use folders something like PS Hot Folders is much more convenient.
5368
The Recent folder (\Documents and Settings\<username>\Recent) shows shortcuts to mru files *and* folders, even though the Start Menu "My Recent Documents" only shows the files.

Not elegant, but a shorcut to the Recent folder at least would give you a quick list.

You can also get to the recent folder by Start > RUN > Recent

The offer has been extended to the 8th (if you missed it) though the download page is still struggling. Seems daft to me to extend an offer they can't currently fulfill - surely a firther 4 day offer would have been better !

Thanks for posting that - I'm sure I posted it a long time ago (and as a reply today) but it may be useful for some people and worth a reminder.

It is probably worth saying too that Copy Path is really useful as you can copy filenames, full path names, and containing folder names to the clipboard via the right click menu in Explorer (and in Directory Opus) in both long name and short name formats - at times these can be very useful.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for (I may have msiunderstood your request) but check out http://home.worldonl...reeutil.htm#pathcopy

regarding the RMA, are they likely to replace the drive - or will i have to spend a lot of time trying to convince them - i'd rather just sling the faulty drive and forget about it if i'm going to have to keep chasing things up.

My experiences with RMAs (via both Maxtor and Seagate) were positive. Both sent a new drive within 48 hours. For that service they asked for credit card details (which were not charged) in case you didn't return the faulty one within the prescribed time frame. It did mean they were sensitive to the need of copying data to the new drive before returning the faulty one.

If you say your drive was completely dead (as suggested by killing it before you return it) there will be no incentive for them to do offer this replacement before you return the item.

Just make sure you use a trackable return service for the drive in case it never arrives!

If you are getting errors like that back it up and RMA it to Samsung !!

Oh and get a screen shot of the reasons you are doing the RMA so that when they receive it back they won't say 'There's nothing wrong with it'

A further thought - how tightly packed are your drives in the box? Try removing it from the drive bay and pacle it on the bottom of the case (make sure there are no metal bits that could short circuit anything. Leave the side off the box and run it again for a while and recech the temperature. It could be simply an airflow problem.

I managed to start downloading one of the files once today - but the server collapsed after 47Mb of download !!

I have the downloads in the "My Stuff area" so I think I may just give it a week or two before going for the download.

Biggest prob is that they are huge downloads and their server does not support resuming !!

By the way if you are tempted by the upgrade to version 6 check out the Poser developer website http://www.e-frontier.com/ because their upgrade price is lower (even with the 10% discount Content Paradise are offering) plus they will ship you a set of CDs.

Great find - grab it while you can

Although I think we have killed their download server - no difficult at 560Mb per download ...
