@Renegade/anyone, have you tried Enyo for cross platform development ?

I checked it out, but it won't work for a lot of the kinds of things that I like to do. There are a lot of things you just can't manage to do in JavaScript. It does look kind of cool though.

And it's reflecting some of the pushback we're starting to see in official quarters over some of the constitutional abuses that were instituted following 9/11.

Things like this give me hope. Not everybody in government is blindly going along with the agenda of the hyper-patriot cabal.

Ha! You laugh now!

But did you know that there are over 200 "sunken cities" in the Mediterranean Sea? So we know that sea level was much lower in the past.

  • Is one of those cities Atlantis?
  • Did the Atlanteans get into an interplanetary war with the Martians?
  • Did the Martians in a suicide attack open up a wormhole to Earth and dump all the water on Mars onto Earth, thus flooding and drowning all the Atlanteans?
  • Does that help explain Noah's Ark?
  • Was Noah a renegade defector from Atlantis?
  • Was Noah able to predict the future?
  • Were all Atlanteans psychic, or just Noah?

There are many, many questions for the Curiosity Mars rover to answer! And each and every question is still far saner than anything found in the world of IP/copyright/patent/MAFIAA. ;D :P

Looking slick! I imagine they'd be great in the corporate world.

I time-shift my bills, but I actually do it forward.  And then I time-shift my pay back.  I'm currently up to paying my next month's bills at the very least with my prior month's paycheck.  It sounds crazy to do... but I have software that actually lets me (and encourages me) to do so.  Of course, it drives some of my bill people crazy, because their systems aren't set up to keep track of someone who is ahead... I wonder why...  :-\

But it's incredibly freeing.  I don't pay bills on the date when they say I should... I pay them at the time of month when it best fits my schedule.  And I always have leeway if something unexpected comes up.  Some might say that's just savings... but my savings is totally separate.  The paychecks that I have set aside untouched haven't been allocated at all.  Quite hard to effectively explain... but it works.

Sounds like a good plan!

The amount I make is pretty much unpredictable. Sometimes I'll make as much in a few days as in some months. And I'm always getting paid a couple months after the work, so... Not something that I could really manage to do myself unless I were to time-shift bill payments by making them late. :P

I've seriously considered timeshifting my consumption of news.. Trying to make sense of the news of real-world events is incredibly inefficient, and so little of it has any immediate impact.  It seems like it would be so much more manageable and relaxing to read newspapers and watch news shows on a 1yr delay.

Just as long as you don't try that with the weather news. ;D

The only problem I can see with time-shifting 'real time' things too much is it makes everything effectively 'virtual' - which I think has a bad effect on some people. Because once everything becomes somewhat unreal or 'less real' there's a risk of a damaging sense of alienation creeping into a person's mindset. At least from my experience with people who electively spend much of their lives in the metaverse and mostly removed from 'real world' sequential reality and causality.

BOOM~! Nice insight there! +1 The increasing disconnect is there for anyone that wants to see it.

Reminds me of an insightful essay that most people would laugh at and dismiss without ever reading:

INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY AND ITS FUTURE
1. The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world.

http://www.washingto...r/manifesto.text.htm

https://en.wikipedia...ciety_and_Its_Future

For time-shifting, I love it. :D

It's great to put on "season #" of a show, especially if it's a great show like Trailer Park Boys. :D (Stuck in season 1 & 2 a week or so ago.)

But, if you look at it a bit differently, you can only "time-shift" live events. If you look at a newspaper, isn't everything in there already time-shifted? This isn't a very productive perspective though as it is really limiting. Like, who would want to watch a time-shifted news program of live coverage of some random sporting event or parade from 10 years ago?

For products, I'm in the "wait & see" boat usually. I'd rather wait until the price of technology comes down and the quality goes up. But not too long... My Raspberry Pi (that I have yet to play with) at $35 has hundreds or thousands of times more power than the $4,000 computer we had when I was a kid. Waiting decades isn't really all that wonderful. So, it all depends on what's out there.

I think eleman's idea of buying a 2-year old graphics card is bang on! Great example of hitting a sweet spot in performance per $.

If you look at music, truth be told, there's so much out there that if nobody ever wrote another song, you'd still never be able to listen to all the music, and "time-shifted" music would all be new to you.

Seems like time-shifting kind of destroys "new" in some ways, or makes "new" kind of pointless. Well, unless you're a vapid fashionista with your identity wrapped up in commercialism, brand-value, and rapidly fading trends. :P (Hmm... kind of sounds like 'fanboi'.)

Mulling that over, seems to me like the "app store" model forces people to stay current with hardware and software as it's either impossible or too difficult to get out of those walled gardens, which makes "time-shifting" either more difficult or impossible in those contexts. Good for the seller, but not so great for the buyer/user.

It's kind of hard to do sometimes with software/computers/phones. Interoperability seems to be the stumbling block there.

Classic books? :D Some books are timeless. Every now and then I go back to some books of essays I have to read for fun. 20, 200, or 2000 years doesn't diminish them in the least. I wonder how much of the music and movies now will be like that? In 200 years, what movies from this period will people consider worth watching?

Why is it so impossibly difficult to manage to stay away from copyright Nazis for just one, brief, fleeting moment? Unbelievable.

Anyways...

It will be interesting to hear what they discover with the rover.

  • Will they dig up Cthulhu's children?
  • Will they anger the Elder Gods, and doom mankind?
  • Are the submartian caverns of Mars accessible for the rover?
  • If so, are the Martians still in hiding there?
  • Or did they leave long ago?
  • Did they come here to interbreed with humans?
  • Did they bring all the Martian water?
  • And is that why Earth has so much water?
  • Is there another explanation for the disappearance of the Martian water?
  • Did a warlike and malevolent alien race from a higher dimensional plane of existence open an inter-dimensional portal to steal all of Mars' water?
  • If so, will they steal our water?
  • What can we do to stop aliens that live on a higher dimensional plane of existence from stealing all our water and making us like really totally thirsty with uber-cotton-mouth?
  • Will we all be forced to drink Coca-Cola and Pepsi products to get water?
  • If so, are the aliens in league with Coca-Cola and Pepsi?
  • Or are Coca-Cola and Pepsi actually aliens from a higher dimensional plane of existence?
  • Are those aliens in league with the Martians that interbred with humans?
  • Or are they at war with each other?
  • Is Marvin their leader?
  • Will he drag humanity into an inter-dimensional conflict of proportions that I can't express with language limited to the 4 dimensions of length, width, depth and time?
  • Will we need to learn how to travel through time to fight back and ensure our survival?
  • Or will we need to ascend to a higher dimensional plane of existence so that we can look upon time much as we look at a timeline on a piece of paper?
  • Is this inter-dimensional war fueled by the Illuminati?
  • And are the Illuminati trying to stop mankind from ascending and fighting in this war because they themselves are inter-dimensional parasites that feed off of human suffering like a psychic vampire?

As you can see, there are many unanswered questions that the Mars rover can answer for us! ;D :P

Well, I've done my bit of activism in my corners of the net, I'm gonna have to take a break from all this junk for a while. The emotional roller coaster is wearing me out now.
I wonder how many people feel/think the same?
I have a theory that a lot of this nonsense is designed to desensitize people by flooding them with incessant change - you get change-induced fatigue/narcosis and stop fighting it. Even the most stalwart activists could become more malleable, less resistant and more accepting.
This is how Scientology and various other brainwashing cults operate.

I was that way for a long time.

I won't discuss it in public, but get me out for a beer. ;)

(or 20)

But seriously, I get it. I was that way before. I'm simply sick of hiding my head in the sand now, and much more prone to spitting out the truth. It pisses some people off. I no longer care.

Another news item here re the TPP draft, from arstechnica: Leaked: US proposal on copyright's limits
I am confused by this. Is this really how easy it is for commercial lobbies to write their own laws and bypass the Senate? That would seem to emasculate the relatively democratic Senate approval processes and effectively make the commercial lobbyists unelected "lawmakers" - wouldn't it?

Still on the digital warpath...

It's much worse than that. Much, MUCH worse... If they fail, the Fuhrer President will act... Nah. I was right the first time. The Fuhrer will act...

After defeat of Senate cybersecurity bill, Obama weighs executive-order option

Senate Republicans recently blocked cybersecurity legislation, but the issue might not be dead after all.

The White House hasn't ruled out issuing an executive order to strengthen the nation's defenses against cyber attacks if Congress refuses to act.

Ahem... The Reichstag has been set on fire~!  >:(

Ok, I must admit that I smirked after reading this:

http://www.businessi...totally-empty-2012-8

Economist Nouriel Roubini is tweeting doom about the London Olympics this morning.

From @Nouriel:

UK policymakers scared so much folks before the Olympic that London is a deserted city: non-olympic tourists are away; londoners are gone!

The Olympics are an economic failure as London is totally empty:hotels, restaurants, streets. They scared all off with crowd excess warnings

By scaring every1 to stay out of London with warnings about too many people coming here it turns that London is totally empty, a zombie city

The rest
RT @Notgiamatti The Yogi Berra effect! Nobody goes there, it's too crowded.

The West End - usually packed on any Saturday night - was an empty waste land last nite: barely a soul to be found in theaters, bars, etc

They scared away all non-olympic tourists that pack london all summer;they pushed most londoners to escape;they told 2million to work @ home

RT @_garrilla that's the 'olympic economy' - all dispacement & deadweight (oh, and hot air)

Meanwhile London retailers are begging the transport system to stop warning about congestion problems, according to Telegraph's Graham Ruddick.

Retail chief Richard Dickenson told Ruddick: “We know there is a displacement effect. Instead of normal tourists you get sports tourists, we knew that.

But we didn’t expect the impact on the London catchment and commuters."

London taxi drivers have reported a 20-to-40 percent drop in income this month, with industry representative Steve McNamara calling the Games "a complete and utter disaster."

More on the topic:

http://www.businessi...ics-curse-g4s-2012-7

We've come up with 43 reasons that we think the Olympics will be remembered as a disaster, and trust us, the list could have been longer — we probably could have come up with dozens of reasons related to the IOC "brand police" or the G4S fiasco alone.

:P

What's the only way to watch the Olympics? Oh, yeah... head on over to http://eztv.it or http://thepiratebay.se. Gee. Sounds like they've done a bang up job on making the Olympics visible...

Now, when the gold is worth a paultry $25,000 cash prize for years of dedication and massive investment in equipment, trainers, etc., and they restrict how athletes can get some sponsorships, can anyone tell me how this is different from "The Hunger Games"? Poor people being used for sport and kept poor for the entertainment of the elite? :P

See here: http://www.businessi...-for-a-living-2012-8

(Yeah - Disaster at the Olympics committee? I'm sooo totally laughing inside. And outside~! :P )

I'm boycotting the Olympics this year.

;D Yay~! More people need to boycott the Olympics.

I haven't watched the Olympics since the 80's. It was complete corporate whoredom then, and it has since slid down the ranks to corporate-crack-whoredom. The level of "control" this year is more sickening than ever.

On top of that, I've always had this icky, dirty feeling about the Olympics. Something has always seemed "off", in an H. P. Lovecraft sense of the word... I suppose the Olympics is just showing its true colors more than ever now. :P

I can't tell you about any essays, but from installing and checking out different CMSes over the years, I still really love the DNN admin UI. It really is done very well. It's worth checking out as it is very intuitive and easy.

Joomla is total insanity by comparison.

Wordpress is mediocre comparatively, but certainly better than Joomla, which is hard to be worse than. (Though I did write a CMS in 2001 or 2002 that sucked pretty bad for the admin UI, and was worse than Joomla aesthetically, though functionally it did what it was meant to do very well for even users that suffered from near brain-death.)

The Host/Admin/Site concept works well in DNN. Permissions are also very good with Portal, Site, Page, Module, and module internal permissions.

However, like every CMS out there... DNN suffers from the same idiotic notion that you only need 1 database user for the entire application... But that's not about the UI/interface, and just an internal pet peeve of mine. :)

There are some CMS review sites out there, but I'm guessing that you've already been over them.

Ouch! That's gotta hurt!

Looking at the comments... Cripes... Go figure. They degenerate immediately. I think there was only 1 there that was worthwhile reading and not just full of vitriol and arrogance.

Here's the worthwhile one:
Spoiler
1. I seriously doubt that the hacker brute forced the iCloud account password.  iCloud (as does Google) allows for only a limited number of password attempts before locking up. Then you have to answer two of three security questions (the two factor authentication).  Therefore, unless you use an extremely easy password to guess, brute force is going to fail since it will take too much time to do.

2. MORE LIKELY: The Hacker is someone the person knows who then got access to his password or someone who used a keylogger.  With a keylogger, if you ever log into any of your accounts on someone else's computer or public terminal, you are screwed immediately.

3. Since the iCloud account was used as the person's central account, any other account which uses that central account as the backup email address (such as his Google and Twitter accounts) became vulnerable to a password resent request.

4. The Hacker easily gained access to his Gmail Account and Twitter Account even without knowing the password by simply knowing those accounts' backup addresses and sending a password reset request.  This shows that Gmail and Twitter are also not very secure.

5. Remote Wipe is a good thing.  The only problem is if a Hacker gains access to the account that can do a remote wipe, you can be remote wiped.  Thus, to guard against this possibility, always do backups of your data.

6. Backups are clearly important.  If the person used Time Machine AND another app (such as ChronoSync) to do hourly backups AUTOMATICALLY AND WITHOUT SUPERVISION, then he would only lose 1 hour of work.

7. Using only one backup email address is bad.  This can occur not only with iCloud but also Google and any other email accounts.  The key is that the person used his iCloud account as the backup email account for every other account he had - his Google account, his Twitter account, etc.  This links these other accounts to the original account.  This problem is the same if he used his Gmail account as his primary backup account. It isn't limited to using Apple's iCloud account.  Using only one email as the primary backup account makes every other account linked to it insecure and accessible because all these other accounts are easy to access via a password request - Google, Twitter are easily accessed.

8. Strong passwords and regularly changing passwords are important.  This helps protect against keyloggers and people you know from accessing your account if they don't do it immediately. Being able to mix numbers, capital letters, and small letters helps make the password more secure. Being able to add symbols (e.g. !
or *, etc.) to the password increases security even more.

The most important lessons:
1. any account can be hacked.
2. backup, backup, backup, backup, backup, backup,...
