@ tomos - "Draw one line, make it a heavy line. Then duplicate it/clone it - but make the second line thinner and make it white."

I was thinking the exact same thing last night. I'll give it a try before anything else.

Thanks all,

I dont know what app you're using, but if you want to print it big - it's definitely worth printing to pdf
(setting the page size to desired print size e.g. A0w and using Adobe Reader X, i.e. avoid Paint like the plague ;) )

best of luck :)

I reckon the easiest way to do this is with a vector programme -
Inkscape is open source/free, will probably do the job.

Draw one line, make it a heavy line.
Then duplicate it/clone it - but make the second line thinner and make it white.

The result will be like this:

Screenshot - 2012-11-30 , 12_35_38.png

if you want, I could produce a vector PDF for you -
but give me some more details.
I can make it any size you want - in the latest Adobe Reader (version 'X') you can print an extra large image on as many pages as it needs -
you get a bit of a jigsaw puzzle after :)

I dunno, it all feels "late" to me. Science, I get, each discovery builds on one ten years ao. English has basically been stable since like 1650, so *now* someone decides to compare Scandinavian structure to English? Really?!

lol, I know what you mean.
The title is very tabloidy too ;)

If what they argue is the case, it must be common knowledge. But probably not considered reason enough to change the categorisation. The academic world OTOH, can be very conservative and attached to their theories, and in this case, their categorisations. Still seems like a bunch of semantics to me.
5256
What if it was Scandinavian structure with Germanic & French words?

English words are mainly of 'West-Germanic', Scandinavian ('North-Germanic'?), and French origin.
I'm not sure of proportions.
(I couldnt answer your question either way.)

PS I've no vested interest in the article. I've read a fair bit about the evolution of the English language but not really -whats-the-word- 'scholarly' stuff :-[
There's influence from all the mentioned countries - whether it gets called Germanic or North Germanic doesnt make any difference to me one way or the other!

I would be more than happy to vector and adjust the original pencil drawing, in order to have it high-res (All participants will receive a digital copy of the original anyway) - Unless someone with more knowledge and skill, could create a super duper high-res version of the drawing for us? xD

Vector drawing will be very different in style & feel. But may be more suitable for a web-version. (I can help that way too -I mean producing vector- if you want.)

What I'd like to see: a simple map-creating program.
As said already, far too big for a Nany App.

Thoughts - in no particular order:

I draw fairly small maps at times for my work - I use graphics programmes, and do trace from older maps - some of which have copyright. If it's only for your own purposes I personally wouldnt worry about copyright - if for publication, you should get permission (= pay an arm & leg to original publisher). They actually have little quirks in maps that they can use in court to prove that you copied their maps ;-)

I know a guy who creates detailed maps for orienteering via copying/tracing and some surveying/field work - he uses some type of cad software - well 'cad' is part of the name - I can check and get back to you - but it is fairly expensive AFAIK.

These days you can download a lot of maps - contour maps of the States, UK etc. I'm not familiar with these in terms of format etc. Probably a lot of GIS based info.

Have you looked at openstreetmap.org ?
OpenStreetMap is a free worldwide map, created by people like you.
The data is free to download and use under its open license. Create a user account to improve the map.
Sounds good to me but I've no experience with it.
See dc thread -
An easy software to make street/road maps? for more info about same and other possible options.

Adobe Illustrator has a mapmaker plugin - again I dont know the name off the top of my head, but you're talking about lots of dosh for Illustrator to begin with + plugin cost.

^ I get what you're saying, but I suspect that's simply a lack of depth/detail in the article -
I cant comment about the Skandinavian sentence structure as I'm not familiar with it - but as a native English speaker, I can say that the German sentence structure is fundamentally different.

General Software Discussion / Re: web clipping
« Last post by tomos on November 29, 2012, 04:06 PM »
I'm curious:
a couple of people have commented about knowing where the clipped item goes.
Can you clarify what you mean when saying that:
when adding a new clip you can/cannot see what clip you are adding it to?

For comaprision
I'm using InfoQube - when I add a clip from FF (or via paste), a dialogue window opens with the web-clip. If I leave it open, I can add multiple clips to the first.
Which is grand (for me). When I eventually click on OK, the clip gets added to my inbox. I go to my inbox later and can move it around or give it whatever properties I want - which means it will display in different 'grids'/under different tabs.

If I copy a new clip, I am unable to add it to a previous clip (unless I go find it, and paste it in that saved clip - I'll prob have to also go copy/paste the url).

If they would simply allow you to choose your windows manager (like you can with Linux) ...

Can you explain "windows manager" to those of us who have no linux experience - or are just plain ignorant about it :-)

I use Gridmove and MoveIt, but I think you mean something else (?)

General Software Discussion / What would YOU like to change in Win.8
« Last post by tomos on November 29, 2012, 05:00 AM »
There been reports of possible new Windows OS's already in 2013 - Windows "Blue" (dc).

I do have some ideas of what I'd like to change in Windows 8, but they mostly small. I'm not an original thinker in terms of GUI, but I do tend to have lots of ideas of how to fix minor problems. They need to cater more to people who are *not* using a touch screen. The ability to turn off some of these swipe gestures (they drive me mad when using a trackpad - things I didnt want or request poping up out of nowhere >:()

Funnily enough -even though it's something very superficial- I think if they made the Windows 8 desktop theme more like the tiled theme, people would find the dichotomy easier to take.

Now, I suspect many will say something along the lines of revert to Windows 7 (and have the touch interface seperate).
If that is roughly your response - then maybe you could say what changes you would like made to Windows 7 please thanks :P ;-)

I'm no linguist, but I do manage conversational German. As they say, English and German sentence structure are very different.
i.e. it makes sense to me. German and English have a *lot* of words in common - but maybe these are also common words between 'West-Germanic' and Scandinavian languages (which are Germanic as well AFAIK).

German grammer is great fun for a native English speaker (probably for Scandinavians too).
Mark Twain wrote an entertaining text about the German language (I've only read excerpts from it).
Here's a quote:
The Germans  have  another  kind  of parenthesis,  which  they make  by
splitting  a  verb in two  and putting  half of it at the  beginning  of  an
exciting chapter and the OTHER HALF at  the end  of it. Can any one conceive
of  anything more confusing than that? These  things  are  called "separable
verbs." The German grammar is blistered all over with  separable verbs;  and
the  wider the  two portions of one of them are spread apart, the better the
author  of the crime  is pleased  with his  performance.  A favorite  one is
REISTE AB -- which means departed. Here is an example which  I culled from a
novel and reduced to English:
"The trunks  being  now  ready,  he DE-  after kissing  his mother  and
sisters,  and once  more  pressing to his  bosom his  adored Gretchen,  who,
dressed in simple white muslin, with a single tuberose in the ample folds of
her rich brown hair, had tottered feebly  down  the stairs, still  pale from
the terror and excitement  of the past evening,  but longing to lay her poor
aching head yet once again upon the breast of him whom she loved more dearly
than life itself, PARTED."

Copy icon is a good idea,
copy filepath easily would interest me :)

FWIW Copy should also be doable via the thumbnails on the left - that panel works as an Explorer window, so use Copy from the context menu.

PS have you seen the latest SC plans - now introducing a 'Screencast Recorder tool' (only in beta yet)

hi saurabhdua,
did you mean this as a Screenshot Captor request?
Screenshot Captor has it's own board- see
https://www.donation...index.php?board=34.0

An animated screenshot could be a very nice way of showing a sequence of events:
i click here, this happens, then I ... etc., etc.
