i have added more error-trapping in case copying to clipboard somehow fails so please check out the new script from the above link.

lanux128, thank you for your efforts.

are you running the script by itself or you copy-pasted in to your main script?

I tried it both ways. Unfortunately even after restarting the system I wasn't able to deploy the script at all. There must be some conflict with some of my other scripts, I presume.

btw, what OS are you running this on? it works fine here on Win 7 Pro (x64).

NB: currently there are a few AHK forks. fyi i am using this one, previously known as AHK_L.

I'm also using Win7 (x64) and AHK_L.

lanux128, many thanks for the script! I'm having a bit of trouble with it though. As I'm using an Apple keyboard, there isn't a Win key. So I changed WIN+D to ALT+V. After that I was able to have one successful instance, but after that it wouldn't do it, even when I reload the script.

This makes me wonder if some bits of this script interfere with some other bits in my file. I don't know anything about AutoHotkey, but for example I already have this elsewhere in the file:

#Persistent  ; Keep the script running until the user exits it.
#SingleInstance force
#MaxHotkeysPerInterval 200

So I'm wondering if that somehow clashes with your

#Persistent
#SingleInstance, Force
#NoEnv

I've got loads of other scripts in the file (even for remapping my Apple keyboard's keys).

Just maybe this one?  IDEA: Standardize File Name With AHK Dialog Boxes

Thanks for the suggestion. It looks a bit more complicated than what I was looking for.

Does it have to be AutoHotKey?  Most of the free-standing mass file renamers will do this, if it isn't in your favourite file manager's mass renaming feature already.

Yes, I already use AutoHotkey, so that would be the simplest solution.

Upon second thought, this doesn't really need to be a special operation for file names specifically, a generic script would do. All I want to be able to do is copy a document's title and use it as its new file name by using a special paste operation that replaces the spaces in the title (file name) with underscores. But it's fine if it also works in any other context, not only within the save dialog box.

Also, it's not for mass renaming but just fixing individual file names. Basically I'd download articles in PDF formats, copy the titles from within the document, and paste it into the save dialog box with a special command to replace spaces (and perhaps any special disallowed characters that need be, mainly apostrophes) with underscores.
529
I vaguely remember coming across an autohotkey script on this (?) forum for replacing spaces with underscores in file names. If this rings a bell for anyone, could you point me in the right direction? I wasn't able to find it via search. Maybe it all happened in a dream?   :-\

Can you help me understand why you would want it to behave the original way?

E.g. if I'm working on a project consisting of several parts (such as several chapters of a book to write), then I can set up each chapter as a bar with its start date and end date, and it's the end date that matters to me to be displayed in each. Why? Because if I overrun with chapter 1, it's more valuable for me to see when chapter 2 is due, rather than seeing that I should have already begun it. I know I'm late, so it doesn't help me to see a start date that's no longer relevant. However, the due date for chapter 2 hasn't changed yet, so that's still relevant information.

With the previous version (that I still use), if I overrun Chapter 1, its bar would display in red that "8 days past due (May 09, 2014)," and the next bar would say Chapter 2 "11 days remaining (May 28, 2014)" in green, so it does tell me I'm late but it also tells me how much time I have left for the next chapter, with its due date clearly displayed.

    • [Feature] When the start time is in the future, gauges now display the time until start.

Is that an option or a default feature? I prefer it the old way. So I'd rather not install the new version, if the previous setting would be lost.

    FileSearchy 1.22 has released.
It includes a function that some of you have asked for: sort by "relevance" (number of matches).

    Great!! Much appreciated!

similar problems also but I put them down to admuncher or ghostery.

Yes, just ran into this problem again this morning and it turns out it was a problem with Adblock Plus for me, too. Sorry FF. (Although I do use the AdBlock extension on Chrome too, and that one let me through).

I started having the same problems with FF 29 as I used to with Pale Moon and Waterfox, i.e. occasionally not being able to complete some purchase transactions within certain e-commerce sites. It would come to clicking the button "pay", and nothing happens, which is hugely frustrating, especially when you're trying to book flights and risk losing a particular fare that is selling out.

In those situations FF used to be my "go to" solution, but this time I had to repeat the transaction in Chrome, and it worked fine. I don't know whether this is only affecting my system, but at least in my world Chrome is emerging as the more reliable browser, despite my best efforts to resist and stick with FF.

I'm not sure about encryption and what you mean by source code, but WorkFlowy has both iOS and Android clients and the pro version backs up to Dropbox. There is also an off-line Chrome app.

It's primarily marketed as an outliner, todo and brainstorming app, but it can be used as a text-only note-taker, where notes can be organised within one overall hierarchy. Each item in the outline has a note field, so it's basically a single-pane outliner with inline notes, all contained within a single (eventually giant) outline as the overall database. The search and hoist functions make it manageable to live within such an infinite outline. Easy export to plain text, formatted text, and OPML.

Great, thanks for that! It narrowed Chrome's advantage down to about 1 pixel, which I can live with ;)

You bet! Hehe "All the goodness of Firefox for one pixel!" (End used car salesman voice)

Actually I'd missed some of the finer options the first time. Now FF is leading by 24px, and it's even possible to get rid of the orange button.

I don't think the global Windows theme is at work here, I think it's the "Title Bar" that's making you grumpy.

I tried out the  Hide Caption Titlebar Plus 2.8.2 plugin here:

Great, thanks for that! It narrowed Chrome's advantage down to about 1 pixel, which I can live with ;)

No matter what I do, the header with the bookmarks toolbar always takes up more space (height) in FFrome than in Chrome. Is that because I'm using a Classic theme in Windows, rather than Aero? I wish they had copied Chrome a bit better ;)

As eleman mentioned, there is the Classic Theme Restorer add-on.  Martin, over at gHacks, recently did an article on it.

Does anyone know what option to choose to restore the "plus" button next to the tab for "Open a new tab" (as in this image)?

Well, Avast say they will continue to support XP users for the next 3 years:

avast! blog » Windows XP users sticking to the OS despite support cutoff

As AVAST users they are protecting themselves since we will continue to support Windows XP users for at least the next three years. This number is relatively high considering the security risks involved with the OS and makes one wonder how many XP users are not concerned about their protection and aren’t planning on upgrading their OS, buying a new PC or seeking AV that will support them. AVAST has been creating protection modules and detections specifically designed to cover Windows XP vulnerabilities and other security problems. We recommend non-AVAST Windows XP users download AVAST for the added protection. avast! 2014 is a light product, both in terms of speed and resource consumption, tailored for older PCs running XP. In addition to this, we recommend users stop using Internet Explorer, as the browser poses an even larger threat when used on Windows XP. The latest version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP is 8, which is outdated and lacks many security improvements available in later versions of the browser. We recommend XP users switch to a safer browser that updates itself, like Google Chrome.

I also checked AVG, and they say:

5529 AVG support for Windows XP

AVG software will continue to work and receive new program versions and antivirus updates.

To keep your computer safe, we recommend to upgrade your Windows to a newer version (Windows 7 or 8). To prevent web-based attacks aimed at outdated versions of Internet Explorer, you can increase your on-line safety by installing an alternative Internet browser, such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

I haven't turned on my XP netbook for a couple of weeks, and now I'm wondering what the best thing to do is. Should I disable the automatic update the next time I turn it on or should I keep installing whatever updates have been or may still be released in the near future?

Quick guess (and prob part wrong!) is there are no "mainline" updates, so get whatever you can right up until today

Thanks, TaoPhoenix, but I heard someone mention a nag screen. Wasn't that included in yesterday's update? I'd prefer to avoid that one, if I can.

I imagine there might be a lot of people like me for whom their XP machine is not their primary machine but their netbook or laptop (my main PC is Win7). It doesn't have the specs to be upgraded to Win7 or 8.

I just find MS's move annoying. It certainly won't push me to rush out and buy a Win8 netbook/laptop/tablet. If anything, this move is more likely to prompt such people to explore alternative OS's such as Linux or ChromeOS (as Deozaan also said above).

But I guess MS is after small businesses. Though even they may consider adopting Chromebooks or Chromeboxes as a result.

I'm telling you, I f---ing love this program.

Well, since you're a lot more enthusiastic about Scapple than I'm about either VUE or CMapTools (though I like both), I'm going to play with Scapple a bit more. I agree that speed and ease of use is the critical factor with these kinds of brainstorming/concept mapping tools. I was pleasantly surprised to see that my evaluation copy still works--it looks like they only count the actual days it's being trialled.

Sorry, wraith808, I must have misunderstood you then. :)

Anyway, the reason I brought the concept mappers up was because superboyac said he was looking for something like that for a long time. I've tried Scapple a couple of times but it didn't manage to tempt me away from VUE. But it could be that I've just got too used to VUE's quirks...

I wouldn't call VUE and CMapTools mind mappers. I'd put them in the same category as Scapple, as they use free-floating nodes, and nodes can be linked to any other node but don't have to be.

That's quite different from mind mappers such as XMind, Freeplane etc., which force you to have a central node from which every other node follows (i.e. a hierarchical tree) and has to be linked to.

There are also some free concept mappers out there, such as Visual Understanding Environment (VUE) (which I prefer) and CmapTools. Neither of these are hierarchical mind mappers, i.e. they do not force you to build a tree-like hierarchy. But they may not integrate with Scrivener as nicely as Scapple does, of course.

For hiding the desktop, Fences comes to mind, though it would require that you set a neutral (solid) desktop colour (unless you don't mind seeing the wall paper):

Double-click any blank space on your desktop and your icons will fade out. Double-click again and they will return. You can even pick icons and individual fences to exclude.

Maybe a macro could do the double-clicking for you? Just guessing, not my area of expertise...
