Mini-Reviews by Members / AltSwitch: Make Task Switching Cool
« Last post by Nighted on October 10, 2005, 04:44 AM »
AltSwitch: www.ironbytes.com

AltSwitch is shareware. As you can see from the screenshots below
is has a pleasing, compact interface and has many features, my
favourites being the ability to select a program using my mouse
pointer and the option to show the process usage. In the first
frame of the main window you can see the tooltip that appears
when you move your mouse over the icons.

You can also right click on any displayed application and minimize it
to the system tray.

Problematic programs that won't display a snapshot properly in the
main dialog can be excluded under the "Exclusions" tab in the options
menu shown below in the second screenshot. You also have the option
to exclude known problematic programs from a list available to download
via server.

$15 is fairly reasonable for such a cool little program that is stable and uses
little resources. I can't remember how long the trial peroid was for, I believe
30 days. I only needed a few hours with it to cough up my cash! :D

From the developer's site:

"Nice computer desktop must be nice in all of its aspects. One of the ugliest things in any Microsoft Windows-based computer is a built-in Alt+Tab task switcher. It remains unchanged since Windows 95, released in August 1995."

Flexible skin support.
Task previews.
Tasks performance monitoring.
Two styles of task previews – "Fit" and "Desktop".
All windows of the task are displayed on the preview image, including floating palettes.
Previews caching for faster switching.
Set of simple task management commands.
Easy switching with HotSwitch feature.
With AltSwitch you can minimize any window to the system tray.
Internet integration.
Mouse navigation support.

TaskSwitchXP is a similar program (almost too similar... Last build of AltSwitch - 9 September 2004, first build of TaskSwitchXP - 8 November 2004) it's free and you can get it here: www.ntwind.com/taskswitchxp/index.html

I wrote James a while back and he immediately fixed this bug. I'm not sure about time stamping though. But you can be assured it doesn't overwrite your image files anymore when mirroring them.

elpresi, AltSwitch does not show the minimized window. However it does show the programs icon with the text "minimised" displayed underneath.

Living Room / Textbook Disclaimer Stickers
« Last post by Nighted on October 09, 2005, 09:35 PM »
I found this on StumbleUpon: http://www.swarthmor...textbookdisclaimers/

The top left sticker is actually authentic and applied to text books in Georgia (according to the site). The rest are paradies of course. I find them amusing but I know that some people are very religious and can become very vociferous regarding this subject.

I'm curious what opinions people on this forum have regarding this topic?

I use AltSwitch: http://www.ironbytes.com/altswitch/

I'll do a review on it tonight with better screenshots than that site.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: I love the Bulk Rename Utility!
« Last post by Nighted on October 09, 2005, 06:46 PM »
I've tried this utility and it is very good...but it's not the best I have found.

Flash Renamer, hands down, it the best I've ever found...and I've tried many. Flash Renamer is the only one I need, all others have since been deleted. I found it when searching for a renamer that I could call from the context menu.

ContextMenu Commander / Re: ContextMenu Commander

Please add a plugin that lets you send shortcuts to a list of favourite folders.
This would be perfect for quickly adding and organizing content in custom start menu folders, quicklaunch, etc.

Also if you could name the shortcut before creating in the chosen location it would be perfect.

:D

Can't wait to check this out!

Image Manager Shootout / Re: The new addendum to the ACDSee Review..
« Last post by Nighted on October 03, 2005, 11:46 PM »
mouser, I agree 100%. If a company doesn't show any interest in supporting their customers you should add that to your review.

That's one of the reasons I joined these forums. Keep up the great workl

Image Manager Shootout / Re: AcdSee like program
« Last post by Nighted on October 03, 2005, 11:44 PM »
Change the extensions of the ZIP files to CBZ and RAR files to CBR.

Now get CDisplay. It's designed for reading comics: http://www.geocities.../davidayton/CDisplay

You're CBR & CBZ files will now be associated with the program and automatically open when you click on them.

I prefer ACDSee though...it's not hard to unzip images into folders.

Thanks for that. I'm going to try it out soon. Look fairly minimalistic with a nice, compact interface...which I really like.

I believe that I noticed some lag too. It sounds like a bandwidth issue.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Best Freeware...no, Best Audio File Tagger Period.
« Last post by Nighted on October 01, 2005, 03:34 AM »
I hear you!

If you have a lot of tagging to do it really is the most powerful program. Once you figure out how you want it set up, it actually makes tagging mp3 etc....fun! It's hilarious how close to perfect it is.

No wonder the few of us that have found it are such fanatics...because this is the program we've always been looking for.

I hope Florian is doing well with donations. He deserves every penny.

Yeah, and you could animate it to make it more noticeable. Have the text that's already there flip over or something.

This is basically it, although where I learned to play it in western Canada we have slightly different rules, and better in my opinion. But this is very close and gives you the basic idea: http://raeside.home.mchsi.com/dice.htm

You ever play that dice game with 6 dice? It's not Yahtzee...it's called 10,000. That would make a kick ass little app. If you want to know more about it I will try to describe it here in detail as well as the full set of rules.

Want to see a sweet freaking keyboard??? Check this baby out! http://www.artlebede...om/portfolio/optimus

Every key on this board is OLED technology...this means you can use any characters at the press of a button. And yes...there's an ergonomic configuration in the works.

General Software Discussion / Re: Worst. Interface. Ever.
« Last post by Nighted on September 29, 2005, 03:04 PM »
You people are going to hate me! lol

I can't think of the worst GUI ever but the worst I can think of right now is Total Commander....YUCK!!!!

Oh, I think Eudora should use a new set of toolbar icons. I wish it was skinnable like Thunderbird.

I also must defend Winamp. I wish all applications gave the user the option to create their own interface. There are some excellent skins. Some are horribly designed but others make Winamp much easier to use and so much more fun!

I find the use of ed2k links and related clients (eMule) far superior to torrents which need a file to start...but that's just me.

So now your modding your DVD player? lol

You should put window on the top and a couple strobing cathode ray tubes inside.
