I keep planning to upgrade, but keep pushing it down the list -
I guess cause I never actually actively use IE.

Someone needs to write a tutorial (or I need to look for one :p) about all that stuff *in relation to various hardware and preferences*.
What I've seen in the help so far (just looked at gestures) doesnt really explain trackpad usage. (I'll look closer later).

The one that's driving me crazy is the 'charms' on the right hand side continuously popping out (also shows the time big n bold in bottom left quarter of screen) when I simply want to move the mouse from a to b - it seems to me to be totally unpredictable - it's a right to left movement, but I cannot actually make the damn thing pop out it I want to.... [this happens with mouse as well as trackpad]
Right click and scroll seem to happen arbitrarily. [I *think* this is the trackpad being fancy and me not being able to figure it out]
I'm clearly at fault for not researching more - but MS is clearly at fault for not making it dead simple to turn off whatever I want to turn off.

I mean in this day and age it should detect your hardware and tell you what you need to know, and offer to optimise it for whatever hardware/with-without mouse etc. etc.

But really - it's only the charms thingy that's the real problem, but boy does it drive me nuts - I even tried a registry tweak to remove it - unsuccessful.

I have really weird problem of a letter being changed in the password when it gets saved in the ini file

which is called security :-[
- it was actually almost or maybe all letters changed :-\ so much for being observant!

But just wanted to report that a password saved in preferences is not used when you start the gui -
seems to be broken since the last security fix - just the username gets filled.

And even then, screen real estate wasted because of tile margins are inexcusable. I didn't buy a 1920x1200 monitor to use it as a 800x600 one.

And btw, I gave win8 a try on a VM, but I am probably past the age when time looks cheaper than experience, so after an hour of wandering around aimlessly, I no longer saw a reason to, and therefore returned to my new win7 installation (the hard drive with my xp one died out 2 weeks ago, so I finally jumped on the 7 bandwagon).

I avoid the tiled world myself - I was simply pointing out -for those who dont know- what actually is possible.
Re space: on a 1366 x 768 screen, space is even more important...

And I can see why anyone without a touch sceeen would go a little batty with 8, and if you use a trackpad you're really screwed :(

For a laptop, I'll forgive it a lot for that boot speed...

[...]
I am a translator and 90 percent of the time I look into one window (foxit reader), and type into another (word). Metro interface is abso-loving-lutely unusable to me as a concept and practice. But I can think of others who do not want to be distracted when typing in a novel or a report. If you imposed a multi-window interface on them, that wouldn't be ideal as well.

Actually, not.  The metro interface does allow dual windows.

here's one way:

My personal favorite new one is win+. and win+shift+. (That's win period). Some of the new "modern" apps are pretty cool when pinned to the side of your desktop. I most often use it for Music, mail or twitter depending on what I'm doing.
-
those shortcuts get you a 25/75 divide of apps/sreen space (in the tiled world) - I dont know how to make that 50/50 (or if that's possible).
You can also have an 'app' on one side, and desktop/software on the other.

When I logged into the site it goes directly into the worklog I normally use
i.e. it's showing me (full page size) the red screen with 'stop' button - which means it's running.

Actually looks like it was running all the time - but it doesnt reflect the work I did on this job yesterday (also logged in via the website)

I am unable to stop it using the stop button. Eventually I click to use one of the icons below to get to an overview - I can stop it from the page that shows all logs.

Unfortunately it was running all the time - after clicking the icon for work-details the total jumped from 750 or so, to 3,500 - unfortunately I have only done round about 900 worth on this job (also unfortunatley, I didnt keep track yesterday of total - my bad).

The sums dont add up though - at my hourly rate, if it was running for say 24 hours non stop, it wouldnt come to 2,500

Also, the work details do not show any details - I occasionally added comments after clicking stop button - there's no sign of these.

If you want we can continue this per email - or if you have a landline I can ring you (I *think* I'm not covered for cellphones).

Living Room / Re: Reducing Scales - Recurring numbers & Patterns
« Last post by tomos on December 04, 2012, 07:46 PM »
Every fractional number (that cannot be further simplified) that has something else than a product of 2s and 5s (10=2*5) in the denominator will have infinite number of repeating digits when written in decimal notation.
1/3, 1/6, 1/7, 1/9, 1/11, 1/13, ...

so, I think the reason I got the same recurring decimal twice, was simply because, in both cases, the number was divided by 7.
(Also the numbers being divided are related.)

the first instance was:
1000/7
and in the second example it would have needed
500/7 to get the correct percentage.

So naturally the second result is half the first 1000 -> 500

Very simple really - once I get a break from it - and get a maths lesson

  • Loads of nice options there  looking forward to trying it in more detail

It didnt start with windows with the option selected.

As said, what got me is the way the number cropped up again.

Let's see:

To reduce from 70% to 50% I must multiply the 70% version by half the scaled-value (? terminology again) of one [1] at that scale (70%)

Just seems freaky to me - might try to look closer at it when I have time.
Might be something to do with area - 50% of something from the scale POV is 25% of the area.
If I figured that out for 70% ...

Love the Cody icon!
And, wow, all those settings -
apart from the fun element, this could be a very useful app

Early alpha for those who want to experiment:

Okay, this is on the fly - apologies if confusing at times but I think it's helpful to give first impressions:

1) Where is the bar though :-\
I created one but dont see it - selected not to auto-hide but still cant see it.

Ah, okay - what I thought was a dialogue is a bar. I dock it and resize it (snap to bar height when resizing would be nice).

2) Would this be possible - install with an example bar e.g. Installed since

3) I turned on the full screen width bar - turning off requires restart (no problem, just saying in case it different there).

4) When I restart it, it doesnt automatically show the saved bar.

5) Here, it doesnt really auto-hide - it fades but reserves the screenspace for itself and doesnt allow windows to maximise fully (I changed that option but maybe it requires a restart - hang on - okay, that's resolved after restart. (Can elaborate if not clear).

You can get the first recurring digit there by dividing 1000 by 7.
(If possible I show a 10 metre scale - that's partly why I look at what 1000 is:
7cm on drawing is 1000cm =10m)

Here a bit of experimenting with halving the recurring number:

Living Room / Reducing Scales - Recurring numbers & Patterns
« Last post by tomos on December 04, 2012, 07:25 AM »
I work with scaled drawings.

Sometimes I have to produce various versions of a drawing at differnet scales.
I can do it fine, but to be honest I find it hard to get my head around some of the concepts.

Here's an example - the reason I even thought of posting it is the numbers with the recurring numbers after the decimal point.
I reduce a drawing/figure @ 1:00 to 70% of original size.

1:100 * 70% =
7:1000 =
1:142.857142857142∞

The 857142 bit is repeating so I added the infinity symbol ∞ (not sure if that's correct)

Later, I need to reduce the new modified version to 1:50 (which would be 50% of the first figure).
i.e. I want to reduce (1:100 * 70%) to 1:50  i.e. to (1:100 * 50%)

100 * 70% = 70
100 * 50% = 50

70 * X = 50
X = 50/70 = 0.7142857142857142∞
which would be 71.42857142857142∞%

which number is exactly half of the number for the first 70% reduction (1:100 * 70%) = 1:142.857142857142

I cannot explain that - I possibly could figure it out, but I'll just enjoy it and move on.
Re the recurring number - if I divide or multiply by two, the result seems to be always recurring at some stage after the decimal point.
BTW is that the correct name - simply "recurring digit" ?

PS thank god I dont work with imperial scales :p

I see the bars are different lengths - is that user-modifiable or automatic some way?
Also see different text on different bars - same query for that.

e.g.
15 wks, 5 days, 29 mins, 12 secs to go
would take up a lot less space than the same info using the full words with 'remaining' at the end.

(I know that you wouldnt have all that info on one line - but the point still valid)
