General Software Discussion / Re: How do you manage your email?
« Last post by superboyac on September 05, 2008, 11:29 AM »
For the life of me, I don't understand why anyone would want to keep deleting email vs archiving.

But there are a lot of great ideas here.  dspelley, I like that Outlook plugin, I'll have to check it out.

I'm also going to search for some GTD methods that have to do with email management.

Please, people, I don't mean to be rude, but this isn't about spam.

Ehtyar, I use The Bat!, and I think one of the great strengths of The Bat is it's ability to handle multiple email accounts relatively painlessly.  Check it out.

No, no, Darwin, you don't get off that easy!  No, this is not about spam; this is about the real stuff.  So, what are your rules?  What's the philosophy behind it?

What a great question, right?  I am very curious how all of you experienced users manage your boat loads of email.  I want to hear the whole philosophy: rules, filters, tags, categories, flags, whatever you use to sort through the volume.

As much of a computer nut as I am, you'd think I have a solid organizing philosophy for email.  I really don't.  I have a bunch of rules setup, but now that I think about it, it's kind of chaotic and not very efficient.  So I'm wondering how you guys do it.

What happens to incoming mail?  Do you archive, do you delete when you're done?

Personally, I haven't deleted anything (that wasn't spam) since 1996.  Email is personal history, I keep it all.  But I should organize it better and it should be more automated.

Also, if you know of any good url's to articles already written about this, please share!

General Software Discussion / Outlook 2007 isn't so bad (EDIT, yes it is)
« Last post by superboyac on September 04, 2008, 10:19 AM »
After dealing with Novell Groupwise for the past 3 years, this week my work finally switched to Outlook 2007.  And I couldn't be happier.  Using Groupwise was a truly miserable experience, and that program is an absolute embarrassment.  Let me repeat...absolute embarrassment.  No company on the level of Novell should be putting out a product that miserable.  It seriously feels like something out of Windows 3.1.  And I've never been a fan of Outlook, having been a long time Pegasus Mail user and currently a The Bat! user, but Outlook 2007 is infinitely better than Groupwise.

In fact, chalk it up to ignorance, but Outlook 2007 is quite nice!  It's very powerful, pretty customizeable, I think the GUI is nice.  I really don't have a problem with it.  If our company is willing to pay for it and the Exchange servers, then I'm happy...very happy with it.

General Software Discussion / Re: The Great Software List.. For Linux
« Last post by superboyac on September 02, 2008, 08:47 PM »
AHHH!!  You're killing me here, Zaine!  Every time you commit more to Linux you tempt me to try it out.  Oh, my wonderful Windows software...what will I do without it??  You know, I'm still trying to put together my "Superior Software List" on my website (tongue in cheek to your list), but now that you've gone totally Linux, I guess my list will stand alone.

You know, I haven't gotten a new machine for over 7 years now.  I'll probably have to get one soon.  Is it time to give Linux a shot?  But I'm going to be so busy...I can just see the transition taking me forever as I try to figure everything out.

You're killing me here, bro.  Just know that!

General Software Discussion / "Open With" alternative for Windows
« Last post by superboyac on September 01, 2008, 02:06 AM »
I was wondering if there existing such a thing as an "Open With" alternative software for Windows?  I bet there is one (there's an alternative to everything else, why not this?).

I have no idea how the open with option in the right-click context menu in Windows gets its choices from, but often they are stupid choices or illogical ones.  And there's no way for me to configure them.  Is there something out there that offers the user a little more flexibility or customizeability?

Armando, I just ran across the same issue this week!  I'm reading a very long chm book and I can't figure out a way to bookmark my spot.  I just write it down (or keep it in my mind).  But yes, please anyone, if there's a way to do this, let us know!
5160
Eesh, I think I'll pass on that.  Too much work!  It's ok though, I looked at other people's websites and it looks like they don't bother putting the two spaces in either.  Thanks for the tip!  You can be sure there will be a nice review for SQLNotes on my website sooner or later!
5161
Why do all my double spaces (like after periods) show up as single spaces on my website?  That's annoying.
5162
starting to look much better superboyac
Thanks tomos.  I really want to get the software section going like I'm imagining for you guys here.  I've already made my list of about 80 or so programs to include.  I just have to learn a little bit of code to make the page look good.
5163
I don't think it's something that can be done automatically.  How is the program supposed to know what category a software fits into?  It's so subjective.  The more practical issue is a program that can make the organizing process easier or faster.

A while back, mouser was considering combining the functions of Launchbar Commander and FARR into one program in order to deal with similar issues.  I don't know if that is still on the table, but I thought it was a great idea.
5164
Wow, wordpress is really powerful.  I'm growing more and more amazed by it.  I also have to give a lot of credit to Justin Tadlock's wonderful theme.  It's really turning out to be a nice site, if I may say so myself.
Once I can figure out how to do the fancy stuff above, it will be really nice.  And the DC members should get a good kick out of the software page.  That's going to be my crown jewel of the site.
5165
Thanks for the mention of my website!  Manly Cup baby!

howardb, try this program:
Mailbag Assistant

It's another program I don't know how to really use, but it sounds like you could use it.

Living Room / Re: Chandler V1 is officially out.

All I was saying is that I see a lot of similarities between Chandler and SQLNotes (especially if you include planned features), and i'm much more impressed by what Pierre's done this last year than all this buildup for Chandler for several years now.

Weird, I don't see what all the fuss is about this program.  All this hype and effort and it probably won't be able to do half of what SQLNotes does, which I might add, is a one man effort.

Very interesting news!  Hopefully it won't cost me too much with the upgrade/integration thing.  Mp3 Collector really is the top of its class though.

General Software Discussion / Re: Linux is Not Windows
« Last post by superboyac on August 13, 2008, 01:51 PM »
...it was damn strange to have an 8Gb RAM Quad-core and it was not much faster than my old PIII.

This is THE critical issue for me.  And it is so true.  This will make me switch to Linux one day, like Zaine, I just know it.  The only thing holding me back at this point is my absolute obsession with a lot of software available on Windows, and I just don't believe I'll be satisfied yet with their "equivalents" on Linux.  But it's baffling, and a little insulting to my intelligence, to see that a fairly powerful computer can get bogged down in Windows even though I'm not really doing anything that is processor intensive.  I rarely do anything with graphics or video, I never play games.  Just email, text editing stuff, simple little programs here and there, music.  Windows is sucking the life out of a computer's power, new or old.  I have no reason not to believe that a 5 year old computer should be able to handle all the things I am currently doing in a very speedy way.  Zaine, one day, when I have a little time to breath in my schedule, I'm going to go to Linux.
Actually, when I get a new computer, I'll change the old one to Linux and test it out.  I'm almost sure that it may seem to be "faster" than the new one.

That's all I do anyway...copy everyone else's great ideas.

well, now you really are ready for grad school  :P
Haha (really?)...

This is an awesome idea.  Kind of like what I'm trying to do with one of the sections of the website I've started.  Maybe, once you figure it out, I can copy it somehow into my website.  That's all I do anyway...copy everyone else's great ideas.  I can't help it, good is good!

If anyone here can help me with the setup of this Superior Software List, I would greatly appreciate it.  It would involve knowledge of wordpress, php, and css.  Here's a description I've posted somewhere else of what I'm trying to do:
(quoting myself)
So, this is how it would work. On the page, I would manually place each category (software categories, not wordpress categories) where I want it to go. Then, using some kind of code, I want a list of posts beneath the category to give me the post title and post excerpt like it is shown in the picture below. I want to point out the compactness of the formatting because there will be a lot of programs to be listed. Notice how the spacing between the bullets and post title and excerpt are much more compact than things normally are in a blog.

So, I was thinking if I add a custom field named "ssl-pick" then the value of that custom field would determine where the post would appear in the page. For example, only posts that have the custom field "ssl-pick" would even appear in the page, and the value of the custom field like "audio" or "video" would determine which list it would appear under.
Then, the title of the post would be the title shown in blue in the screenshot (where it says "Program (post title)") and the post excerpt would be the little summary shown in black text in the screenshot.

I was reading a little about this, and I'm still not sure exactly how to do it, but it sounds like it would involve page templates, some kind of query, and something called The Loop.
Here is what I'd like it to look like:

This is one of those things that I don't understand, but sounds really cool.  I can at least say that the software seems well-designed.  Very nice, Codebyte!
